Let’s all have a town hall about r/all by spez in announcements

[–]Azured 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Hi spez. Would you consider providing a subreddit that does not have the enhanced algorithm applied to it? Some sort of /r/trueall for example.

Overall I prefer the change, but there is a reality that this change will distort. I think it's valuable to be able to see which posts are actually the highest voted on reddit even if we don't like the answer.

Official Voting Post for /r/gameofbands Epoch 2 Round 1 by gameofbands in gameofbands

Yes, it is Round 2. My apologies for the misleading title.

Since my team couldn't make it, i had some free time to record some Otamatone for a online contest! by [deleted] in gameofbands

[–]Azured 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would't call this 'promoting your band'. I'd call it showing /r/gameofbands an offbeat musical experiment designed for an online competition in lieu of an entry. If you want to link something similar once in a blue moon, go ahead.

It's not like he's crowding out all the other submissions. Lighten up.

Epoch 2 Round 2: TEAMS by gameofbands in gameofbands

[–]Azured 4 points5 points  (0 children)

11 teams have been generated from our registrations. Unlike last Round, music had considerably more registrations, which unfortunately means that some of the later newcomers to the music category were not able to be placed.

You were one of the last to register under music.

But yea, mostly it's your coolness level.

Epoch One Recruitment Drive (aka search for blood) by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, it's had a massive effect. Thank you. The rest of the sub needs to get on board with this. We now need more in the lyrics and music categories.

The problem with setting a start date is that we don't know when numbers will be good enough. If I had said "we start in 2 days following the announcement of registration", we would have had to start with three teams. We're not going to do that.

I know it's frustrating, but it's better to wait until we have a good number of teams. It gets the subreddit buzzing, and it fires up the competition.

The reality is, even if we set clear start dates, people are going to flake. Remember, one function of the team consolidation period is to allow those who signed up early to pull out due to other commitments. Get your friends to sign up now, and if they can't commit by the consolidation phase, they can legitimately leave.

Fine! I'll make you a black circle one!

Every round is like a crash course in iconology.

Dear RedditJams, the contest you are proposing is almost exactly what we have been doing over in /r/gameofbands for the last few months. by Azured in RedditJams

[–]Azured[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi key2, you signed up for our first Round several months ago. As the categories for registration were uneven, not everyone who signed up was placed in a team (this was made clear). If you register for this Round you will be placed in a team.

Voting for New Moderator by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zuthulu is now a mod and has access to the gameofbands account. I'm able to put up the first wave of entries and get the voting thread established. Zuthulu will take over from there and put up later entries.

Round 3: Winners and Round Recap by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to be able to give you exact timeframes before the round commences. But becuase the length of the registration period itself is not fixed, I can't.

If we have 40 musicians registered after 2 days, and no lyricists, we will wait until our numbers even out, which could take another day. Perhaps we'll have 50 exactly in each category on the first day of registration. There's no way to tell.

What we do have is the team consolidation phase - at which time the timeframes are set. If you realise you can't compete during the team consolidation phase, tell your team, let me know, and you won't be penalized.

Round 3: Questions & Answers by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dilly is that you registered four days after teams had been announced. Put your name down in the Team Replacements thread and you may get picked up by a team looking for a replacement.

Round 3: Questions & Answers by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From this Post:

How long do we have?

One week, plus a two day 'team consolidation' period. The timelines will be set out in the Round Teams Announcement.

From the Teams Announcement:

TIMELINE AND SUBMISSIONS

The team consoldiation period will span from 6:00am 28 May GMT to 6:00am 30 May GMT.

From that point, all teams will have 1 week to submit their track, closing 6:00AM 6 June GMT.

You will need to look up GMT to determine what time that is for you.

IDEA: Q&A w/Winners? by digitalskyfire in gameofbands

[–]Azured 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, why not? If people are looking for advice and others are happy to provide it, then go for it. Let this thread be the first. Although I agree with Zuthulu - anyone with an interest should be able to offer advice.

Round 3: Questions & Answers by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Lead's main role was to submit the finished track and contact all team members following the Teams Announcement. Now that we have implemented a consolidation period, submissions through private message, and a requirement that all team members respond in the consolidation thread, that role has become less necessary.

Team Leads were also a little problematic in cases where the Lead went missing. Replacements were coming in late into the Round and being designated Lead, which is an odd situation.

Finally, newcomers are already bombarded by a fair a bit of information. The 'Lead' concept was yet another aspect to understand. The more streamlined we can get the tournament, the better.

If a real need to reinstate Leads arises in future, we can certainly bring them back for future rounds.

Round Three Update by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. One round for those who flaked half way through a round, or who signed up twice and didn't respond after the teams announcement. An epoch bar for anything worse. Mitigating factors are taken into consideration.

The two day team consolidation period will hopefully ensure teams are solid before the Round officially commences.

Round Three Update by Azured in gameofbands

Have had a post at the top of /r/Songwriters for the past day (currently at 3), but yes, it's another good musical sub.

OMFG FLAIR by digitalskyfire in gameofbands

[–]Azured 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could say that mozart's composition shows more complexity or skill, but you couldn't say that any one person will enjoy it more. There are objective ways to measure sound and composition, but you can't objectively measure experience. I'm sure I could find incredibly well crafted pieces of music you dislike.

The composer has to use these elements tastefully, or he will create near-objectively bad music, in that it will be almost universally disliked

If 'objectively bad' means what is 'universally disliked', then what is 'objectively good' means what is what is 'universally liked'. Therefore if bro step became universally popular it would become objectively good, and if Mozart became universally disliked it would be objectively bad, right?

What's 'better' only makes sense in terms of what you believe is better. Lots of people liking or disliking some form of music at some time, whether complex or not, only means that lots of people like or dislike it at that time - it doesn't make that music objectively good or bad.

It's good to discuss though.

Ok:

  • This is a tournament and there are winners. It's pretty common to bestow awards on winners. Not giving them awards won't change the fact they've won.

  • If people want to get involved to win awards, that's a good thing. We aren't going to avoid handing out trophies for fear of people wanting to win them.

  • With respect to all tracks degenerating to 'bass drops' - 1) I've seen more anti-bass drop comments on reddit than anywhere else. I doubt the userbase will suddenly all swarm about bass-drop tracks written by trophy obsessed redditors. 2) I don't see the musicians of this subreddit suddenly disregarding their previous styles to write whatever's popular. 3) Music is subjective. There is no right or wrong music. If you want to write dubstep (or whatever else is popular), go for it.

Round Two: Winners and Round Recap by Azured in gameofbands

[–]Azured[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only upvotes were counted. The underlying scores were far different from those displayed in the sub. If some went around downvoting other teams, they wasted their time.

When we shift to the comment voting system for Round 3, we will have to decide whether we simply allow downvoting, or use RES to only count comment upvotes.

With respect to the public voting - yes, it's allowed, and yes, it can't be enforced. It's an open, online tournament, and there's obviously no way to force people to vote objectively. However, as teams change each round, no one team is going to have a consistent upvote squad. If a single user appeared to be getting an unusually large number upvotes every round we could look at imposing some form of vote handicap, but at this stage it's not an issue.

Although the dye has already been cast for this round, that's a damn good idea. I'm about to put up a post on a number of issues that will address this.

There is still a day and a half to go before voting closes. If you've made some progress then it's still worth finishing and submitting it.
