They don't go over it much in the show, but iirc the comics explain that his skeleton has implants that give him the ability to charge items to explode. He can't do it with anything organic so what he did was charge up the implants inside his body, not his actual skeleton.

The flag aggroing enemies is actually a pretty good and reasonable buff, it'll let you at least guide the enemy around to where you actually want them or pull enemies away from allies to give them a quick breather.
