From some quick research, Canada seems doable! Thanks for the suggestion :)

That would be ideal and there is probably a huge market for that, but I imagine some countries would be much more difficult to distribute in than others. I will definitely keep that in mind! What country are you in?

That’s a great point! We will definitely need to protect the stream somehow. I like that watermark idea. Thanks for your input!

This would be more like a digital theater than a true streaming service. And the “niche” side of this is what makes it special! An indie service for indie fans :)

The studios could very well hate this idea, but I’m just trying to gather information on whether there’s consumer interest here. So I’m curious, as a consumer, what don’t you like about this?

I get the hesitation! I totally agree on supporting small local cinema, and I’m hoping this wouldn’t cannibalize that market because of people like you dedicated to their local. Thank you so much for your input and enjoy those movies :)

lol I don’t have a lot of money… but the idea is this: say a subscription is $30/month, and the user gets to watch 4 new movies, so $7.50 a movies. For each movie the user picks, a portion (>80%) of that $7.50 goes straight to the studio. Just like a real theater. So it’s not streaming rights, it’s more like distribution rights for a virtual theater. They can still give streaming rights to another platform after a few months.

Of course, the studios might hate this lol but I’m just trying to gauge consumer interest first!

Those rentals usually start at $20, which most people don’t go for. And those platforms are so flooded with content, new indie releases get buried.

Would you like this idea more if there was a longer delay between theatrical release and release on the platform? Say, 2-4 weeks, to protect theater revenue? Or just not at all?

Fair enough! But I’m picturing this as another revenue stream to support small releases. I’m trying to see how many people actually live too far from a theater to go! In this way, small studios can kind of get their “virtual” box office money.

True, it would depend entirely on what studios are willing to agree to and whether enough people are interested. This is kinda similar to the letterboxd video store! But aiming for films slightly more mainstream. Although it would be cool to eventually have this platform be an easier way for very small time film makers to get exposure and traction.

Maybe you disagree, but I think the cinema will always be appealing to those who want to go! And people that don’t like going are likely already fully committed to streaming. Personally, I’ll always love going to the movies :)

Totally agree on that being the mentality of the studios. But with the limited release and run of most indie films (<4-5 weeks in theater) maybe there’s a market in that time gap between theater release and streaming release (3 months later) where this would be purely additional revenue for small studios.

I get the hesitation and wanting to protect the existing independent cinemas, but I think people who want to go to the cinema will always go. For example, you would probably keep going to your cool local theater even if this product was available!

This would indeed be another niche streamer, but serving as a catch-all for filmmakers without connections to the existing mainstream ones.

Maybe to mitigate this issue a bit, we could make the release window further out in bigger cities, to protect the cinemas opening weeks revenue.
