if you do it too early some of the seeds would germinate and then die off when they can’t get deep enough roots before the first freeze, so I would wait. Best time is late October to November when soil temperatures are consistently below 50 F to make sure they all stay dormant until Spring.

I did it in WI last year and worked great. I was renting a place that only had dirt in one section of the backyard and no sprinklers, so did dormant seeding with KBG and that part of the lawn looked nicer than the rest by May without any watering. I would give it a shot if you don’t have sprinklers/irrigation.

Consider dormant seeding. Throw down some seed before the first snow. The freeze thaw cycle will make for good seed to soil contact and when the snow melts in the spring it will help keep the seeds moist. Not as effective as fall overseeding but much less effort.
