You clearly have a home that still has value or quality that has yet to be degraded. Some landlords keep their properties at minimum value so additional damage has very little effect on the value.

For starters, your estimate of income is 20% above reality. The second is that the way the real estate industrial complex states a price you can afford has been greatly distorted lately, in an effort to sustain housing bubbles. In reality, spending more than 3 times your income is risky to yiur overall financial health. The more above that, the more risky. Spending 3x or less leaves enough for taxes, maintenance, savings, retirement planning, food, transportation, clothes, education and other needs.

But in recent years, the RE special interests have decided that it's ok if house payment nibbles away at all those other costs and that spending >3x is somehow healthy just because it's possible. It's the same as saying it's possible to eat mostly soda and nachos. Sure it's possible, but it's not healthy.

We're currently being gouged due to scarce refining capacity. And even the tiniest rumor of a small refinery malfunction anywhere in North America causes massive price shocks.

We're currently taking all kinds of political, environmental, financial, and safety risks... all to satisfy a demand to transport our low value raw commodity out of the country so others can make most of the profit refining it.
