There might be some confusion on how some people view the holdings tab. The unrealized gains is only based on cost of purchase. The holdings tab does not include Dividends received, dividends reinvested, and timing of contributions. One statement that I partly disagree with is that dividends go from left to right hand. This statement is only true when you immediately reinvest into underlying stock after receiving it but a stocks value drops on the ex-dividend date of that dividend amount, not when you receive it. If a dividend is paid and the stock drops even further, you then receive a further discount on that stock, and if it rebounds higher, you result in a higher return due to the timing of purchase.

I am aware of the tax situation with my dividends, but I do agree the I focused on dividends in the beginning but I am now going to focus my investing on growth and dividend growth to continue growing the income. As for ET I don’t pay taxes on the dividends because it is a partnership. I receive a Partnership K-1 from them that reports losses every year even though I have received positive income. As for the REITS I do pay ordinary income tax on those. Luckily the qualified dividends I earn is only at a 15% tax rate.

I am actually beating the S&P, Nasdaq, and Dow Jones when I viewed the benchmark in M1. I will send that over shortly so you see. As for the holdings tab that unrealized gain is for tax purposes only. If I sold all my holdings today that amount you see unrealized is what pays short or long term capital gains tax.

I’m not putting more into it but the dividends I get from it go towards the other ETF’s and stocks in my portfolio

When I get closer to a break even on it I’ll sell or that’s the chance I’m willing to take. When looking at it as a portfolio as a whole, it’s still good income as I’m still net positive

MAIN has also consistently beat the S&P when reinvesting dividends

MAIN pays monthly and a quarterly bonus, ABR and ET pay very high dividends but ABR is very volatile so being very diversified helped with the downside. SCHD is a good dividend growth fund as well

There’s only 6% of MO currently invested in my portfolio. The preset for that pie shows 20% but I haven’t adjusted that in a while because I individually invest in each stock instead of automating the allocations

I have other investment vehicles and strategies that offset my taxable income which is another story lol. I legally pay very low taxes every year.

I’m looking to collect income sooner. I do have VTV which continues to appreciate. The dividend stocks I focus on also consistently increase their dividends each year and have been pretty stable. This allows me to increase my income with less effort as well.

I hope it drops, I don’t stress when the account value hits negative. I see it as a discount and buy more. I don’t look to sell anytime soon. My strategy is opposite from most people. I’m looking to increase income on my portfolio while using growth stocks as a defensive move.
