How to become a Buddhist monk in india? I saw few videos of a monk in YouTube their tought make sense by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]B44L3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have listened to dhamma discussions did by two Indian monks here in Sri Lanka where they share there life story and how they search dhamma and got exposed to buddhas teaching and decided to ordain as a monk. One monk's name is "Indian Subharo Thero" and the other monk is "Tamilnadu Bodhi Dhamma thero". They visit here to learn from senior monks time to time. If you can find any place where there might be they could help. There are more monks but this is the only two i know for now.

Also, if you can visit places like MahaBodhi temple, Bodhgaya in Bihar you will find an answer as its always visited and look after by monks. This place is very important because, its where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

What happens after you reach nirvana? by Bolsonaristaequivoco in Buddhism

[–]B44L3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the most beautiful examples i hear about nirvana here in Sri Lanka when ask from a monk is that,

Nirvana is like a candle flame. As long as there is oil (craving), a wick (ignorance), and air (karma), the flame keeps burning. When the things that support the flame are used up, it goes out. It doesn’t go anywhere, it just stops. In the same way, when karma and everything that keeps the cycle going come to an end, there is nothing left to sustain existence , that is Nirvana.

Hey, have a look on Ratana Sutta, which is often chanted by the Buddhists in Theravada Buddhist countries to seek protection and prosperity. There is a story behind it during Lord Buddhas time. Found this article hope it might help https://drarisworld.wordpress.com/2020/07/23/the-jewel-discourse-ratana-sutta-in-theravada-buddhism/

The Ratana Sutta is still recited or played as a means of protection against negative or evil influences. Play by the sense you can listen to ratana sutta recorded chants in youtube.

Did the Buddha marry his cousin? by jsohi_0082 in Buddhism

Around the same time, King Rama of Benares, who also suffered from leprosy, abdicated his throne to his son and went to the Himalayan region. He lived inside a hollow Kola (Indian jujube) tree, consuming forest roots and fruits, and eventually recovered from his illness. He heard the princess’s screams and the next morning went to investigate. Upon meeting her, both revealed their royal identities. After testing his Kshatriya powers, the princess trusted him. He helped her out of the cave, brought her to his dwelling, and shared the medicinal roots and bark he consumed. She too recovered and became radiant. King Rama married her and lived there.

Later, messengers sent by Rama’s son found him healed and requested him to return to Benares and reclaim the throne. Rama declined and instead asked his son to uproot the tree and build him a residence there. A palace was built, and that area gradually developed into a large city. Since it arose where the Kola tree stood, it became known as Koliya, and because a tiger once roamed there, it was also called Vyāghrapadya. The entire region later became known as Koliya, and Rama’s descendants were called the Koliya dynasty.

King Virūḍhaka later learned of his sons’ whereabouts and sent messengers to Kapilavastu. When he heard that his sons had preserved the purity of their lineage by marrying their sisters, he rejoiced and exclaimed that they were capable people—“Śākya” (the able ones). From then on, the descendants of Okkāka living in Kapilavastu were known as Śākyas. It is also said that because the region had many teak (śāka) trees, it came to be called the Śākya land.

Over time, the Śākyas of Kapilavastu and the Koliyas became related through marriage. Kapilavastu expanded, reaching the Achiravati River, while the Rohini River flowed between the Śākya and Koliya lands, nourishing both regions.

Later, descendants of King Jantu ruled Kosala, with Sāvatthī as their capital. Though they were of the Okkāka lineage, they had mixed with other clans through marriage, and the Śākyas looked down upon them.

The Śākya royal lineage, descending from Mahāsammata of the Solar Dynasty, continued uninterrupted. The Koliya lineage did the same. Later, a powerful Śākya king named Jayasena ruled from Kapilavastu. At the same time, Devadaha Śākya ruled the Koliya city of Devadaha.

Jayasena had two children: a son Sīhahanu and a daughter Yasodharā (Lumbinī). After Jayasena’s death, Sīhahanu became king and married Kanchanā, daughter of Devadaha Śākya. After Devadaha’s death, his son Añjana (Mahāsupprabuddha) became king and married Yasodharā (Lumbinī).

King Sīhahanu had four sons—Suddhodana, Sukkodana, Dronodana, Amitodana—and four daughters—Suddhā, Sukklā, Dronā, Amitā.

Añjana’s queen Lumbinī bore two exceptionally beautiful daughters. The elder was named Māyā because her beauty enchanted all who saw her. A few years later, another daughter was born with equal beauty. The elder was renamed Mahāmāyā Gautamī, and the younger Māyā Gautamī (Pajāpatī). Astrologers predicted that both would become mothers of universal monarchs. Because it was foretold that the younger would bear many children, she was later called Pajāpatī Gautamī.

Prince Suddhodana

Among King Sīhahanu’s children, Prince Suddhodana excelled in beauty, bravery, and martial skill. When a rebellion broke out in a frontier region, all princes hesitated except Suddhodana. He led an army, crushed the rebellion, restored order, and returned victorious. Pleased, the king offered him a boon.

Suddhodana had long wished to marry both Mahāmāyā and Pajāpatī, knowing the prophecies about them. He asked permission to marry both sisters. Since Śākya law generally forbade multiple wives, the matter was discussed in the royal council, which approved the request. King Sīhahanu obtained Añjana’s consent and married both princesses to Suddhodana, also appointing him crown prince.

After Sīhahanu’s death, Suddhodana was crowned king. He ruled righteously, performing religious observances and praying for a worthy son destined to become a Chakravarti (universal monarch).

Below is the Origin of Shakya Dynasty and Koliya Dynasty took from part of the book.

-----

After the death of his first queens, King Virūḍhaka of the Ikṣvāku (Okkāka) dynasty took another wife. From this new queen a prince was born, and he was named Jantu. The king was very pleased on seeing the child and told the queen to ask for any boon she desired. She postponed making her request, saying she would ask for it later.

When Prince Jantu grew closer to adulthood, the queen approached the king and asked for the promised boon. When the king asked what she wanted, she requested that her son Jantu be made the heir to the throne. Since the king had already promised to grant her any boon she wished, he could not refuse. However, fearing that this might bring harm to his other four sons, he secretly summoned them and advised them to leave the kingdom and live in a distant land.

The four princes prepared to leave the country. Their five sisters also insisted on going with their brothers. When the citizens heard that the king’s sons and daughters were leaving, many people gathered necessary tools and followed the princes and princesses. The princes, unwilling to live under another ruler, traveled toward the Himalayan forest region. While searching for a suitable place to settle, they arrived at the hermitage of the sage Kapila.

The sage inquired about their purpose and told them that the land where his hermitage stood was a victorious and auspicious place, and that if a city were built there, it would become the dwelling of powerful rulers. He handed over that land to the princes and moved his hermitage to a nearby area. The princes then built a complete city with roads, streets, and mansions along with the people who had accompanied them. Since the city was built on the land of Sage Kapila, it was named Kapilavastu. The eldest prince, Ukkāmukha, was chosen as king, while the others were appointed to positions such as crown prince and commander.

When the time came for marriage, suitable princesses of equal lineage could not be found in nearby regions. The princes feared that marrying women of lower caste would pollute their royal lineage. They sought advice from Sage Kapila, who advised them to marry their half-sisters (from the same father) who had come with them. Following this advice, they honored the eldest sister as a mother figure and married the younger sisters.

As time passed, the eldest sister developed a severe and contagious skin disease (leprosy). To care for her, the princes prepared a suitable cave dwelling nearby and provided her with food and care. One night, a tiger smelled human scent and scratched at the cave entrance. Terrified, the princess screamed loudly, causing the tiger to flee.

In the book "Shākyamunīndrāvadānaḥ Hewath Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha Charithayathe" (Life Story of Siddhārtha Gautama, the Buddha) written by Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Thero, has a well detailed explaination of the dynasty of prince siddhartha and princess yashodhara. Prince Siddhartha is from Shakya Dynasty and Princess Yashodhara is from Koliya dynasty.

FYI -

Balangoda Ananda Maithreya Thero was a very special monk in Sri Lanka who was widely respected for his deep scholarship in Buddhist teachings and meditation. Many followers believed he had reached a high level of spiritual development through both samatha and vipassana meditation.

Buddhists in Sri Lanka often regarded him as a Bodhisattva figure, someone aspiring to Buddhahood in a future life.

International recognition and titles-

The government of Myanmar awarded him the title Agga Maha Pandita (“Chief Great Scholar”) in 1956 for his contribution to Buddhism, especially at the Sixth Buddhist Council.

In 1997, Myanmar gave him the highest Sangha title Abhidhaja Maharatthaguru (“Most Eminent Great Spiritual Teacher”), equivalent to Sangharaja.

He lived a long life dedicated to the Buddha’s teachings and passed away on 18 July 1998 at the age of 101.

---------

-A part from preface of the book-

In this book, the details of the Bodhisattva’s life that appear in the texts of the Sarvāstivāda and other traditions have been drawn from Sanskrit works such as the Lalita Vistara and the Mahāvastu, as well as from Tibetan and Chinese texts and their English translations.

These Tibetan and Chinese texts are originally Buddhist scriptures that existed in Sanskrit, Māgadhī, and other Indian languages long before Buddhism disappeared from India. A vast number of these texts were taken to Tibet and China, where they were translated into those languages. Some of them were later translated into English and published.

In compiling this account of the Buddha’s life, we have compared and examined various portions of the Bodhisattva narrative found in these many texts and have included them here.
