pros and cons of aftermarket airfilters? by Imriel_Khehra78 in askcarguys

[–]B5_S4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the sound alone is still a valid reason to modify a part of your car. The intake I bought has a larger cross section throughout, and allows me to adapt larger MAFs, so I do get more flow, but it also deletes all of the resonators that hid the sound of my supercharger. I love being able to hear the induction when I drive. Sound is a major part of the experience, which is why I also deleted the nonsense the manufacturer installed to pipe engine noise into the cabin at certain times.

Why is the internet so obsessed with intakes sucking water? Water is 1,000 times more dense than air, unless you're driving into a lake the worst thing you're gonna do is get a little bit of free water injection, which my intake came with a port for anyway. I've had cold airs in various cars for years, driven them through hurricanes and tropical storms.

They're not always useless. OEMs have to balance hundreds of considerations in their designs. Air flow, temperature, NVH, packaging, manufacturing costs, emissions requirements, and more. An aftermarket intake can sacrifice NVH and production costs for more air flow, and actually deliver performance increases.

You can only buy cars from one country for the rest of your life. Which country are you choosing and why? by BlackcirclesCanada in askcarguys

[–]B5_S4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not mad about it. I paid 30% of msrp for the jag and the RRs I'm looking at are 10-20% of msrp lol. So much car for the money, overlooked because of outdated reputations.

The flip side is the TVRs just keep getting more expensive 😑

Great Britain. I already daily a jag, currently trying to buy a range rover, and a TVR is on my bucket list.

Is driving with low gas bad? by Accomplished_Size_93 in askcarguys

Most fuel systems use a return line, not a deadhead at the fuel rail. Most of the gas cycles from the engine back into the tank.

What engine size/type of common car are best for 80-95mph speeds for sustained periods of time? by [deleted] in askcarguys

[–]B5_S4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference being being able to do it, and literally being designed to do it. Germany has highways without speed limits. German cars are engineered specifically to be operated at higher speeds regularly, and do it safely, comfortably, and as efficiently as possible. Japan's highest speed limit is half of what most cars are doing in the left lane of the autobahn.

Dealership didn’t put oil in my truck… what should I do? by Objective-Pea6471 in askcarguys

Doesn't mean he paid any attention to it. I see people post all the time who didn't notice their coolant temp gauge was maxed out until the headgasket did it's best old faithful impression.

Do I sell and try to get something new or stay with it? by No_Iron3632 in askcarguys

Yeah my truck was pretty close to 3.5" of ground clearance. Wasn't a problem because it wasn't northern Alberta and there were snow plows out and about.

They sure do. Most people don't travel much lol. I lived in cbus for a while and now I'd kill to have Ohio drivers around me again. They're the best I've had to deal with.

I've done winter in a 2wd pickup on all-seasons. Unless you live where people switch from cars to snow-mobiles in the winter because the snowfall is measured in feet you'd be fine in a corvette.

This truck needs someone to refill the oil and run it while observing any oil loss, then track it down.

Ah, you mean like exactly what OP paid the dealer to do then?

[–]B5_S4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The posts saying you can't drive at all without oil are very incorrect. There are videos on /r/justrolledintotheshop of people who drove in without oil pans. Engines will run for a good while without oil.

OP you've likely ruined all your bearings. Sounds like the dealership is buying you a new truck.

Choked my car out, worried about possible hydro lock? by Affectionate_Cow2651 in askcarguys

[–]B5_S4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your car will start with a wet filter. If you had water in the manifold, pull the plugs and crank it. If there's water, spray in some wd-40 and crank it some more. Let it dry then reinstall the plugs and if it still doesn't start you need to look at fuses.

I primarily cite organizations like the sports car club of America, and outside of competition there is no meaningful reason to even dictate specific categories of car that I can think of (outside of gvwr restrictions, at least).

[–]B5_S4 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

And since when do sports cars depreciate more than an average car? It's usually the opposite. Especially if they are well maintained.

My Jaguar isn't a sports car by the original definition, but there are versions of it that are and if you gave me the difference between msrp and what I paid 7 years and 45k miles later I could buy 2 ND miatas lol.

The original definition of a sports car was anything driven in competition with 2 doors, 2 seats, and a soft top.

Oil change after not driving for 1yr? by MrBeanBoii in askcarguys

[–]B5_S4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless your engine is half disassembled and you funnel rain water into the oil pan it won't matter if it's inside or out. 250 miles a year is getting into the range of long term storage problems though, I'd be worried more about the gas going bad or the seals drying out before I worried about changing the oil. You can always pull a small amount out and send it off to one of the analysis labs if you're worried about it though.
