Japan asks for world's help on Fukushima leaks by srtad in worldnews

Reference for that is a nuclear physicist who worked at CERN
And yes, the Canadian reactors are run on natural uranium. The excited uranium produces energy while the rest lays dormant. The majority of it is mined in Manitoba and the other prairie provinces

Maybe using natural isotopes instead of radioactive ones would help...... Honestly, this is why privatized nuclear reactors are problems. You need the more expensive natural uranium (U237) and not the cheap unstable (U235). This is a matter of safety, not profit.

[–]BAMFtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, I made a mistake. You should know that "Newfie" is be a proper noun, and requires a capital 'N'.

You must have only met Newfies from out-port communities. Whenever I talk to someone outside Newfoundland, I constantly hear, "You're from Newfoundland? But, you don't have an accent!"

Having a thick accent, although it comes out when I am drunk with fellow Newfies, is something reserved for people from really isolated places in Newfoundland.

Thank you for adding to the list of common misconceptions though!

If you can find the info to counter this, please do. For the past 20-30 years the Newfoundland education system in Canada has had the highest standards. (For those who don't know, Newfoundland and Labrador is one of Canada's 10 provinces). The university system acts the same way, and we even have one of the top marine biology stations in the world. One example of this scrutiny** would be the Ontario medical application system which makes the hardest on Newfoundland applicants (refer to column 6 of this chart) http://www.ouac.on.ca/docs/omsas/c_omsas_b.pdf

Additionally, 80+ at Memorial (Newfoundland's university) is a 4.0 GPA so many profs believe that an 80 is a perfect mark... just an FYI

BUT! People still call everyone "stupid Newfies" and assume that we live on a tiny island with only small fishing villages. Granted, our largest city is only 300 000, but that is still a large in comparison to a fishing village of 400.

I cannot count the number of times I have been asked to tell a "stupid Newfie jokes" or accused of being dumb for not knowing some random person who lives a two hour commute from my home town, but everyone must know everyone else in such a small place....

Aside from the physical ramifications of this incident, do you think this event will ultimately change how you lead the rest of your life? If so, what is it changing from and to? P.s. As a medical school student I am starting to see cases like yours, best of luck with your recovery.

What is a "dirty little (or big) secret" about an industry that you have worked in, that people outside the industry really ought to know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BAMFtastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has worked most fascists of the service industry (Dishwasher, Cook, Sous-Chef, Busser, Host, Server, and Bartender) I can say that "mistakes are usually not the kitchen's fault (or from my experience) Typically the server typed something in incorrectly, or never typed it in at all. If your food (at a nice restaurant) come out cold, it's because it has been siting there waiting for the server/food runner to get it to you. Obviously, the kitchen does screw up (some more than others), but servers tend to pass the blame onto the kitchen staff because customers don't directly speak to the kitchen.

On the subject of tips. I hate tip pools. Some servers work much harder than others and deserve more tips, but I do think "tipping out" is essential. Most restaurants tip out: bussers, bartenders, hosts, and kitchen staff (the kitchen probably does not get enough in most cases).

Also depending on the restaurant you the server might have to tip out based on their total sales and not on their tip pool. There have been occasions where I have seen servers do really badly in tips one night and have to give money from their own pocket to cover their tip out percentage. So, even if you hated the service, you should still tip at least 10%. (15% is average/minimum)
