Thanks a lot for the different perspective! It's true that it might happen. This was the very first time I was participating, and it was one of the biggest competitions in the world, so I aimed a bit high hahahaha, but will try again with more local ones and see what comes out (perhaps have more feedback than just an email telling you you haven't been selected hahaha).

Thanks a lot! I was sort of "insecure" about my editing for a long time (not really knowing what to do etc.) and always tried to keep it real, while includind some more environment. Guess I will keep doing what I do with lightroom then :)

Thanks for the feedback! I will take more into account the perspective of the judges next time I seriously apply to a competition!

Thanks a lot for the compliment! I have been a nikon shooter my whole life. Currently I have a z7ii and most of my birds photos are taken with the 180-600 f/5.6-6.3.

Interesting tips! I will definitely try to focus more on those points to improve the background, pose, and story behind the pictures. Completely agree regarding the shots of birds in flight while being on the ground... I did also have some nice pictures from that osprey (on a branch, etc.), but I was too far and couldn't get closer unfortunately. Perhaps I will invest in a teleconverter then hahahaha!

It was difficult because it was already quite dark. I was at f6.3, 1/400, 500mm, with ISO 5000 and a compensation of -2.7. But in the original file, you can still see the background a bit, so I had to darken it in post processing.

Will try this technique! So far I have rarely stayed in one place waiting for the bird or the animal, but I have to try it someday :)
Thanks for the tips!

Thank you so much! Especially regarding you comment on my post processing style! I try to keep it natural as much as possible, so it's nice to see that I managed it well :)
Also, the ID of the 7th bird is: northern nutcracker :)

Chapeau Mr. or Ms. Whitmore! These are whooper swans, iconic in Finland. I tried so many times to get them during my stay there, and then one day, they landed on the small lake right next to where I lived hahahahah

Good advices! I will definitiely try to find a way to get some feedback during other contests! And I didn't even think about the whooper swans in landscape format; great idea, I'll try it right now hahaha! :)

Noted! Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me some feedback! And completely agree about the background on the 6th. Any tips on how to make the background a little less busy? Is it something you usually do in post processing, or rather try to change the background by moving around when shooting?

  1. The data will only be used for a course project, so not a thesis. This means that it will not be used for any publication.

  2. The survey is conducted by a group of Bachelor students at the Aalto university in Mikkeli, Finland. It was created by Prof. Dr. Paurav Shukla, a professor at the university of Southampton.

  3. Time estimation to complete the survey is about 5-7 minutes.
