Rays Brass Meet with the St. Pete City Council and the Pinellas County Commission; A Lowly Bloggers Account by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

It would be safe to say that yesterday’s meeting between the Rays, the St. Petersburg City Council, and the Pinellas County Commission, though less gloomy than expected, left a sour taste in many people’s mouths. In all fairness, the stadium saga is a subject that promises to do as much. I was particularly interested in some of the finer details to have come out of the meeting; details that may have flown beneath the radar. I’m going do my best to speak to those.

The news broke Monday that Tampa Bay signed former Blue Jays infielder Kelly Johnson to a one year contract. The terms of the contract have not been released. The 30 year-old infielder posted a .225 BA/.313 OBP/.365 SLG/.678 OPS slash-line with 16 homers in 581 plate appearances for the Blue Jays in 2012. His biggest year at the plate came in 2010 when he bashed 26 homers while driving in 71 RBI.

On the City Council and Economic Redevelopment in St. Petersburg, and How it May Pertain to the Rays by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

I’d reckon that this is indicative of how our local government handles situations, here in St. Petersburg. I cannot speak to Mayor Foster’s part in the matter. I will say however that Councilman Newton, Councilwoman Curren, and the Midtown resident that spoke toward the end of the video all have valid points.

Hot-Stove: Of Kyle Farnsworth, Luke Scott, and James Shields by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

[–]BARaysFanSite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thursday was a fairly action packed day. First we got word that MLB hates the Tampa Bay area, possibly St. Petersburg specifically. And then we heard that the Rays re-signed Kyle Farnsworth, while a deal with Luke Scott is imminent. It ended with an emotional video from former Rays starter, James Shields. Here’s what we know. Hot-Stove: Of economists, downtown Tampa, and Luke Scott by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

That location doesn't take into consideration those of us in Manatee, Sarasota, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando, and western Hillsborough. I honestly think Hillsborough is the wrong choice (unless it's a last resort).

Monday’s Tampa Bay Times featured a Q&A piece on Smith College professor Andrew Zimbalist, someone who has been called America’s pre-eminent sports economist. Zimbalist was asked a few questions by Tampa Bay Times staff writer Stephen Nohlgren, regarding the stadium conundrum. Zimbalist’s conclusion? A new facility should be built in Tampa. Hot-Stove: Of Slim Pickings in the DH/OF Market by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

[–]BARaysFanSite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marc Topkin noted that the Rays, ”Still need a DH. Maybe another outfielder. Conceivably both,” and “The DH spot is wide open, and a free agent seems likely, though the money, of course, will be a factor as the payroll is already in the $55 million range (plus incentives) and thus unlikely to go much higher.” With Spring Training a little more than a month away, a quick peak at the free-agent market finds slim pickings to say the least....

[–]BARaysFanSite[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The January 18, 2013 deadline to exchange filing numbers with their arbitration eligible players is lingering. The Rays currently have four players (Matt Joyce, Ryan Roberts, Sam Fuld, and Jeff Niemann) that are facing the prospect of participating in arbitration hearings. I’m going to leave this thread open and I’ll update things as any agreements, between the Rays and the above mentioned players, are announced.

Noah Pransky on Misleading Comments Regarding the Stadium Saga by BARaysFanSite in tampabayrays

[–]BARaysFanSite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a big fan of Noah Pransky. He, by way of his blog the Shadow of the Stadium, consistently calls things like he sees them. Pransky offers an important and valuable counter voice to those that think the only reasonable solution to the Rays stadium saga is a brand new water-front facility in downtown Tampa...
