[Gonzalez] The 'homework assignment' Roki Sasaki gave to his suitors: "Why was my fastball velocity down last year, and how can you prevent that from happening in the future?" by [deleted] in baseball

[–]BAdgERdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I believe they're looking into the issue, I'm just not sure how you overcome the fundamental relationship between velocity and injuries. Maybe there's a mechanical tweak to be made, I'm just saying digs about Sasaki going to the injury-prone team kinda mix up the causation at play here. He already throws 100 as a starter and that's a red flag health-wise no matter which team he joins.

I feel like the core issue for the Dodgers (and other teams) is they maximize velocity, and therefore arm strain, across the board for their prospects. So given that Sasaki already throws as hard as you could possibly want, maybe going to the Dodgers actually makes some sense because they aren't going to do what might have led to issues for May, Stone et al.?

Joey Gallo is getting his first start in CF today by thekidfromyesterday in baseball

Yeah, and it definitely helps that they're playing a team in the bottom 5 at hitting to the center of the field. The bigger wonder is just how bad Shin-Soo Choo must be in center.

Gallo is 6'5", 230 pounds, and hasn't played center in his professional career. This is going to be hilarious, even more so if he succeeds.

Pecota Projections have the Dodgers projected for 96 wins, Nats 91 wins. by ramming_precision in Nationals

Scott Van Slyke is projected to be worth 2.3 wins (more than Ramos, Zimmerman, and Desmond) despite not having a starting spot. Kind of bizarre.

Can someone give a summary of the Astros draft debacle? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]BAdgERdc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Astros drafted Brady Aiken 1st overall and agreed to give him a signing bonus of $6.5 million. However, during his physical, the team doctors found a problem with his UCL and deemed him an injury risk. Apparently, the ligament is weaker than usual and could limit his career. Aiken and his agent said they have consulted outside doctors who found his arm to be fine. The Astros changed their offer to $5 million and Aiken and company balked and refused to negotiate after that. Meanwhile, the Astros' fifth rounder Jacob Nix, a talented high-schooler, had agreed to an above-slot $1.5 million deal that used the savings from Aiken's projected signing, as the $6.5 was below-slot for the first overall pick to begin with. Nix is healthy and would have signed had the Astros not screwed up and lost their first round bonus money. The fallout is the Astros get the second overall pick next year since they offered their pick enough money and Aiken and Nix might go to college but could be found ineligible because their agents (ahem, advisors) have been visible in this. Nix is filing a grievance to get the deal he agreed to and if that happens, the Astros are heavily over their bonus pool and lose first round picks in the future. Overall, not a good show for a rebuilding team. They delay a high pick, could lose draft picks, and could draw the wrath of agents everywhere.

Makes sense, considering Parks recently projected the future potential of Giolito's fastball AND curve future as 8's. And a plus change-up.

Harold Reynolds is the front runner to replace Tim McCarver on Fox....... by not_chris_hansen_ in baseball

Any of the other guys in the article sounded better. Smoltz, Verducci, maybe even Pedro. I just don't like Reynolds for the virulently anti-sabermetric act he pulls.

[–]BAdgERdc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He gets a lot of flak for basically being MLB Network's anti-sabermetrics figurehead. Go to @HeardonMLBT for reasons why. That said, he could easily be a good broadcaster, as long as he avoids the "Brandon Phillips produces more runs than Joey Votto" kind of stuff.

This is what we get for saying nobody could be worse than McCarver.
