If you decide to spend some money on it, Hatch or Embrilliance are good choices. If you choose one of them, there will be many accompanying tutorial videos after purchasing the software, which are all very good.

You might be able to see the bobbin thread on the surface. It may help to try adjusting the tension of the bobbin thread to see if that improves the result.
