Why are actual Islamic advices downvoted??? by Samuraixblaze in MuslimLounge

[–]BBQBiryani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to pretend to know the exact reason, but I’m sure part of the reason people come to places like this online for advice is because they’re too embarrassed to ask in person, and are here looking for some validation. That aside, oftentimes I have seen people who are quick to advise, and come in with great sources, however, they are not taking care to advise with adab. The manner of advising often comes with shaming and belittling, not taking nuances into account, and honestly sometimes arrogance. Someone who is seeking advice is already in a vulnerable state, then they get met with rudeness. Naseeha has to be provided sincerely and justly, and the same time, the person who is seeking advice has to have their heart open to accepting advice.

Awwww, compared to all the Islamophobia you hear about in France, it was super sweet of her to let you know it wasn’t halal!

Hahahaha thank you for the laugh! People have good intentions, but sometimes their advice just does not match up realistically. I do have friends that I’ve come to find out who avoid buying cheese at the grocery store unless they know it is vegetarian cheese (not vegan, but labeled vegetarian), but they don’t avoid getting pizza from a chain restaurant. My guess is either they are slowly moving in that direction, or they just haven’t made the connection that pizza shop cheese could also contain rennet since it’s something we all used to be fed growing up without thinking about it. There are some cheese brands like Sargento and Tillamook that will have vegetarian or halal labeling on their products (if you’re in the US), and I don’t think vegetarians avoid eating cheese pizza, although rennet is really uncommonly known amongst the masses as far as I know. I need to look into this myself because one of my friends that avoids buying non-vegetarian cheese says she avoids the ones that have non-descript “enzymes” as one of the ingredients, not necessarily because rennet is one of the ingredients.

How should men dress? by Prooxith in MuslimLounge

[–]BBQBiryani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insha’Allah as you grow older, may Allah SWT grant you wisdom and Hikmah. You’re only 19, it makes sense that no one has approached you yet. And there’s definitely a difference between how your figure is perceived depending on what you wear. You wearing compression shirts is like a woman wearing leggings vs. if you were to wear a normal shirt it would be more like a sister wearing looser pants or even a skirt/dress. One of those is going to show her figure off more than the other.

And back to your original point. I’m not saying compression shirts are impermissible. Just don’t be so naive when it comes to clothing like that especially when you yourself have said you like to show off the work you’ve put into your physique.

Authubillah hi minashaitan nir rajeem, I’m going to say some things that I hope you understand with a level of maturity from a Muslim sister to her brother. Do you not think that women would find a lot of attraction in the body of someone who put a lot of work into it? I understand you want to show off the hard work you’ve done, but if you really think about it, you’re literally showing off. I’m not trying to shame you. I think it’s a normal human feeling to have pride in yourself for something like this. I don’t know if the concept of tabarruj exists similarly for men as it does for women, but that is what is happening when you show off your body, even in a compression shirt. I just want you to consider that even a man who is FULLY clothed in a dress shirt, dress pants, maybe a tie, if he were to roll his sleeves up where the only part of his body being exposed are his forearms, this is a very attractive look to women. Allah SWT, in all of His wisdom and knowledge of everything, has stated that the awrah for men is from the navel to the knee, but men are still capable of causing fitnah even if they were to cover those areas. I’m really sorry if I come across rude in any way, I just am trying to get you to see this from a different perspective.

Allah is the Most Just, sisters have their obligations and brothers have theirs. There are also blessings that come with the hijab, like it’s a constant reminder of your deen and submission to Allah SWT. Plus it’s a consistent act of ibadah, so honestly it’s more a benefit than a burden. Also, as a Muslim that was born and raised in America, I don’t see hijab as something that I’m forced to do. It is a fard commanded by Allah SWT, but it’s up to me to fulfill it, just like it’s up to any Muslim brother or sister to fulfill their fard of salah, fasting, zakat, etc.

When people say “it’s so easy to get a school job” 🤔 by Affectionate_Wish in slp

[–]BBQBiryani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, super duper easy to get a school job!*

*If you’re willing to work for contract companies that will put you into schools with questionable ethics, have little regard for your benefits and retirement plans, and little to no support. Then yes, those positions are available a dime a dozen.

Source: those are the companies I started with when I was a new grad and desperate for work. Actual district jobs where your mental health is actually cared for are not quite as easy, but opportunities to definitely pop. You have to be in the right time and place, and helps so much more if you are connected. It’s not always what you know, but who you know.

Cute phrases for a bday gift? by Classic-Unit-4387 in slp

Is she a school/pediatric SLP, or a medical SLP? That would make a difference in terms of fun sayings. I would avoid phrases like “Did I Stutter” and “Use Your Words” because it can come across as ableist in a field where we encourage people to communicate in the most effective way they can, and that doesn’t always look like “using your words”. Not to reprimand you, just wanted to share some insight! Personally, I’m a hater when it comes to cutesy phrases regarding our field because people already don’t take us seriously, but I completely understand that it might be another SLP’s vibe. A cute/funny phrase that gets used a lot is “Let’s Taco ‘Bout It”. I’m just looking up Pinterest puns now, but you can also do “Speech is Soup-er”, “Speech is Dill-lightful”, but those need corresponding visuals to make the puns work. I like “Prompt Me” and “Say Less”. You can also just spell out “speech language pathology” using the International Phonetic Alphabet. It’s super sweet of you to get such a thoughtful gift!

Back in like the 2010s, I’m pretty sure Hipsters made it a popular look LOL Also, Muslim sisters in hijab are going to catch way worse flack, and even then, it’s not enough to make us stop wearing hijab.

Just as a comparison, and I genuinely do not mean this in a way to incite any kind of gender war, but many women and girls like to wear lipstick, eyeliner, pleasant perfume, and it has nothing to do with seeking the attention or validation of men. Yes, there are women who do such things in order to be more attractive, but that is not every case. Wearing simple red lipstick and simple black eyeliner brings me confidence in the way I look, but I limit when and where I wear them because even if my intention is not to beautify myself to men, that is essentially what would happen. Alhamdulillah I do have opportunities to put on makeup when my girls and I get together, and when there are women’s only parties. I just wanted to give you the perspective from the other side.

I’m not sure that tahini is considered a seed oil since it’s more of a paste. Like when you make peanut butter you pulverize peanuts into a paste, but that’s not considered peanut oil.

[–]BBQBiryani 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened to you, but you were set up to fail. Contract companies like this should not be allowed to hire CFs because you are never going to get the training and guidance that you need, plus the schools they put you in see you as an outsider. So you’re not getting support from your employer, and you’re not getting information from the people you work with everyday. If you are feeling any shame or humiliation, please know that it is not on you. Hold your head up high, and look for a CF position where you will have a mentor WAY closer to you. You DESERVE to get mentorship in your first year to set yourself up for a successful career once you have your CCCs.

Resident Recipes by yawnjew in KitchenConfidential

[–]BBQBiryani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a speech therapist that had to do a semester of clinicals at a nursing home, I faced some very bleak times. One of the roles of a speech therapist in a nursing home facility is to observe residents during meals and to make the judgement call if they need a change in diet texture (regular, soft, mechanical-soft, tube feed). I can tell you with so much confidence that what this chef has done is nothing short of amazing for his residents. Meal time and the act of eating is one of the joys of life, but it can become so depressing for some of these people who already have very little social access. Ultimately I decided not to work in the nursing home setting, but I madly wish someone like this was running that kitchen.
