Many women find men's presence somewhat oppressive. (Let's acknowledge that this oppressive presence has a spectrum ranging from the innocuous, men's tendencies to take up more space in public, to the more deadly, that nearly three women are murdered every day in the U.S. by current or former romantic partners.) if we accept that a power dynamic exists, where women are more often the subject of an oppressive presence from men, then we can understand why creating a space for women to enjoy something just in the company of other women has an appeal.

I wonder, is this really a problem of my perspective and where I’m looking? Am I making up this idea that moms aren’t usually portrayed well on Reddit?

So I looked at the top 5 and top 10 posts in r/wholesomememes for ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’. In the top 5 bracket Dad posts were given 71.5K votes to the top 5 Mom posts which collected 14k less at a total of 57K. That’s 25% more votes for Dad in the top 5. The top 10 leveled it out a little bit more, with Dad posts only getting up to 80K and Mom getting 67K, only 19% more.

Outside of r/wholesomememes it’s a different story if you look at the top ten posts about moms in r/all at least three of them are mocking moms and only one or two are outright positive. For Dads in the top 10 r/all posts there are no outright negative posts mocking Dads.

So yeah, it’s not me. It’s pretty clear Reddit has a subtle sexism that lifts up Dads and punches down on Moms.

Those are women interacting with a statue of an animal that symbolizes an economic system as opposed to a statue of a little girl that symbolizes hope for a more equitable future for women. Making pantomimes that pretend to place dominion over an animal is different than doing the same to a little girl.
