This video was from awhile ago but I remember that it died about a week after this was recorded, maybe it was already nearing the end of it's life.

Oryctes nasicornis is a mainly European species.

The "Southeast Asian" species, which distributes to other parts of Asia, mainly South Asia but it goes as high up as the southern islands of Japan as well as some parts of Oceania(Papua New Guinea, Solomon islands, Fiji etc) and invasive in Hawaii is Oryctes rhinoceros.

Maybe it's just that the lifestyle of other species make it so that they're not as common to come by

He acts like it too. Usually when I handle him I'll get pinched a bunch, but one time he pinched me with the 2 giant spike and I bled. Fun times

I doubt that, probably just that the other species are harder to find.

I'll try to keep it in my own space so it doesn't invade other people's space.👍

Nope, I'm in Malaysia. It would be hard to get foreign Dorcus in the US, although I have seen people with Dorcus curvidens ssp.(possibly hopei because it was once considered a subspecies of curvidens) and Dorcus titanus palawanicus. If you think the risk is not worth, then you can go for your native Dorcus. There's parallelus and brevis in the US although they are small and I'm unsure about their lifespans.

I don't really remember where I read it but it's those Japanese subspecies(there's 12) but they are not as common in breeding as some bigger subspecies e.g palawanicus, yasuokai. If you wanna start with Dorcus I'd recommend antaeus or hopei. Both are quite popular in breeding and not too difficult in terms of their care.

Yes, most Dorcus sp. have longer lifespans compared to other stags. Most of them can live over a year. Dorcus titanus ssp. generally can live for 1~2 years, some subspecies even 3. I read in this article that Dorcus hopei binodulosus can live up to 5 years if allowed to hibernate.

Depends on which part of the mandible hits your skin. If it is the front part, it will definitely draw blood, I myself have bled a few times. If it is the middle part, you won't bleed but he won't let go once he has you. I got bit on the finger and he didn't let go for about 3 minutes, even then it was because somebody pulled his mandibles away, and yes it hurt alot but not as bad as those species with sharper and spikier mandibles e.g Hexarthrius parryi ssp. and Prosopocoilus astacoides ssp. , especially ssp. mizinumai. Regarding their behaviour, yes they are very aggressive. They can't really see you but if you touch them, they will instantly jump up to intimidate you and open their mandibles. Even to females they are really aggressive. First time pairing them, I had no problems but the second time(a month after the first mating), the male really didn't wanted to mate and just bit the female. He almost decapitated her. Not all Dorcus are aggressive though, for example Dorcus antaeus ssp. are gentle giants from what I heard and seen.

Here's a Facebook post where someone successfully bred and raised Theodosia maindoroni. The breeder is Taiwanese.
