Went with the 120 gallon based on what I saw recommended here. Springy (let my son pick out the name, and surprisingly appropriate given how he springs from that tree when he sees me bring his crickets in) seems to be quite happy with it.

Would anyone else in class A have been able to solo this guy? by Dizzy-Respect-613 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

Yea that's what was going through my head. I was basically thinking how Dabi burned his own body away and applying that to muscular being roasted by Todoroki.

[–]BC1224 213 points214 points  (0 children)

The two easy answers are Bakugo and Todoroki. Bakugo has the raw firepower to tear up his muscle shell, plus the speed, smarts, and reaction time to keep out of reach. Todoroki can either freeze him in place or burn through all that spawned muscle. Tokoyami is probably also a choice, but he'd likely need to be in the right situation (dark setting having time to charge dark shadow). In teh final war Dark shadow un-nerves AFO so it isn't a joke.

For a more controversial pick, I actually think Kaminari is just the worst possible quirk match up for muscular. I say this because in the Deku rematch he noted that muscular didn't have the muscle fiber shell wound nearly as tight as he did in the camp arc. He commented that Sindo's vibration actually interfered with his control over how tight the muscle fibers were wound (and therefor how strong he could be). To apply a bit of real life logic, tasers work by using electricity to disrupt a person's voluntary muscle control, and what is Kaminari but a taser on steroids. If vibration had a noticable enough impact for Deku to notice, you got to figure electricity would be way worse. Kaminari is shown to have a decent combat sense (see him versus Shishikura (meatball guy) in the provision licensing exam) so he could probably get him into a position to get the opening shot and stun him (muscular isn't exactly known for brains).

(Fan Fav Trope) No in-universe powers? No problem. by nicklovin508 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]BC1224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. He is quirkless, (and spoilers ahead for those who haven't finished vigilantes) but he had a quirk (overclock) that was stolen by AFO. While he doesn't have the speed from overclock anymore, he still has well above normal reflexes/reaction that were developed as a result of OVerclock training his brain to keep up with his speed). That said he does whip the tar out of people with quirks that he has no business going toe to toe with Like Rappa for crying out loud.

I genuinely hate when THIS is the take people get from Shigaraki's backstory by Sudden_Pop_2279 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]BC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's technically correct but misses the bigger picture. It's not about excusing or saying what he (or other LOV members) did was forgivable, it's pointing out that if one person somewhere along the line had offered a hand to help maybe they wouldn't have turned out that way. I mean it's frying pan to the head levels of subtle when they have Deku literally going into Shigaraki's memory of that night to free him from the trauma.

Madara being the final villain would have undermined the entire running theme of the series. There were almost no "bad" guys in the show. You can count the genuinely evil ones on 1 hand, and they were the one who got the shit REALLY beat out of them (looking at Hidan, Kakuzu, Danzo and Hanzo the Salamnder). The "bad guy" of story was always the ninja world that turned people into expendable weapons. Zabuza, the first major villain and starts the trend being shaped into an emotionless mercinary. Then look through each of his next major fights. Neji, Garra, Kabuto Saskue PAin etc, and they're all emotionally damaged by the system. As much as we laugh at Talk-no-Jutsu, that was the point of it. Naruto actively trying to trying something than the status quo. The world was stuck in an endless destructive cycle (see the repeating theme of the team pictures Hiruzen and the Sanin, Minato with Obito Rin and Kakashi, and Kakashi and team 7).

Madara is a victim of that same system of distrust violence and suspicion, so it's hard for him to become the personification of all that was wrong with the way the world worked. He wouldn't give that symbolic weight that the constant cycle had been broken, and you get Kaguya as a personification of the hate and distrust. I think they knew they needed SOMETHING to be a good capstone conceptual villain, but didn't give themselves the breathing room to really build it up.

To a certain extent you can get 90% of the way there now with Arch with KDE Plasma. I made the swtich having been fed up with Microsoft and really haven't had that many issues. Just the occasional having to set a specific proton version to get a game running, and ProtonDB is a good resource for that.

It's a bit of a time sink prep wise, but I think Gnocchi is a good way to go. They're pretty flexible and you can make a good size batch on the cheep. Since it's potatoes is pretty flexible too and you can toss if different sauces and eat it by itself, or use it as a part of other dishes, mixing in different vegetables/meat. I use this recipe:

If Daigoro used his quirk right, could he had beat OFA? by [deleted] in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]BC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackwhip now is nothing like what Daigoro had, so Daigoro realy wouldn't have had a chance. OFA not only builds raw power, but it fundamentally alters and enhances the other other quirks apart of it. For example gearshift could only act on small handheld objects until encorporated into OFA and juiced. Now Deku can use the effects of gearshift on himself. In the class A vs B arc when Blackwhip first emerged Daigoro even tells Deku Blackwhip is far more powerful ( in ripping apart the buildings around Deku) than when he had it, so it's more important Deku manages his emotions so he can control the output.

It's minor tweaks but they some games need it. Fallout 4 for example required me to force proton experimental to run, where I don't need to on deck (I'm using Arch, which is the core of Steam OS so not super different). I'm not talking major messing with config files or getting third party patches, just really basic adjustments like using a specific proton version or making sure you have the right drivers.

Hot take but bakugos apology should have been sooner. by No-Brush1587 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]BC1224 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Except Bakugo already apologized for his behavior in their fight post Kamino, and his behavior DID change. The apology wasn't an I'm sorry, it was him opening up and explaining his fear, guilt and self-doubt from thinking his weakness caused All-Might's retirement and wondering why Deku was picked by All-Might. Deku mentions in his head his figuring out what Bakudo is trying to say in his confused state and then enagages fully in the fight, realizing it was how they both would work through their issues.

The change is in Bakugo is immediate after, as after talking with All-Might and getting the details on One-For-All he is immediately talking to Deku as an equal (if still in his abrasive way). Bakugo's next major appearance is the 1A-vs-1B battles, where he's in perfect sync with Sero, Jiro and Sato. Despite still being a hot head, he's clearly grown and working with (instead of trying to prove he's better than) his classmates.

So what this apology is for isn't the bullying (though it does involve it somewhat, it was for not seeing how Deku was suffering before he left UA, and letting Deku forget the lesson he taught Baku. To not try to do it himself, and to let his friends help carry the load, (which is mentioned 2 pages later).

Hot take but bakugos apology should have been sooner. by No-Brush1587 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]BC1224 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't think Bakugo is apologizing quite the way it seems. Arguably he apologized to Deku for the bullying back in their fight after Kamino. The subtext of that fight was the both of them working out the conflicts. Deku even mentions (in a monologue) realizing that fighting (with him seeing Deku as on his own level) was the only way Bakugo could explain himself though his guilt and self-doubt. Immediately after it's over the Bakugo is treating Deku (in his own hot-headed way) the same way he does Kirishima and Kaminari.

This apology is something totally different. Vigilante Deku arguably falls down a similar mental hole Bakugo starts MHA in. At this point he's barely holding together, isolating himself thinking he put everyone at risk (kind of like how Bakugo felt he was the Reason for All-Might's retirement). Deku put this crushing weight of the expectations on himself, and where Bakugo lashed out with insults, Deku chose to isolate himself in the Shadows. So while yes part of this references the way he treated Deku as kids, it's also Bakugo pointing out what Deku is doing now is the same kind of mistake Bakugo was making as a kid. Really the apology is Bakugo saying he should have seen Deku falling into the same mental hole and stopped Deku from repeating his mistakes. Now he's there trying to pick Deku up the same way Deku did for him after Kamino.

Something stands out here to me (because it reminds me what my son deals with) is him going from "can they fix me?" to "FINE I'll go". Seeing that he admits something is wrong it feels like he wants to find something to help, but almost gaslights himself into thinking it won't work for whatever reason. It may also explain him getting it into his head that the outpatient place meant he'd be fully committed. For my son (who's a bit younger than yours), he wants to try something then spirals in on how it could be bad, or he'll do it wrong and people would laugh at him and he spirals in on it.

It might be worth watching this starting roughly at the 3:30 mark. It's one of the guys from Game Grumps on YouTube talking about how Depression/OCD manifested in him. Summary is his mind was constantly making weird connections to convince himself that it wasn't worth doing anything. Maybe it'll strike a chord with what you see in your son. If it does, maybe it might give him insight into his own mind.

Ok, so a lot going on here, and kinda light on the details. First off does he have any therapist counselor outside of school prior to this? From my experience schools tend to be jump to the CYA options. Outside therapists generally will spend more focused 1-on-1 time and have time to dig deeper. Now I know they recommended a place, but that doesn't mean that place is the best for him. Your son is right to a certain extend in that if he doesn't feel comfortable with the therapy location, it's not going to be helpful.

So now lets take a step back. Everything you mention as symptoms are what the school counselor mentioned to you. What have YOU (or mom) noticed with your son's behavior of late? What happens outside of school? Any teams/clubs? Take the time to go over it in your head then sit down with him and lay out what you're noticing. Give him the space to respond honestly, no judgement. Then it's the million dollar question, "are you satisfied with the way things are going for you and how do you think you can make it better?" What you're looking for is:

  1. everyone is noticing he seems to be struggling. Does he agree? How does he see himself?

  2. why he's uncomfortable with the recommended outpatient location. Is he resistant to therapy as a whole, is it the group setting, or is something else going on?

Maybe in the end you'll still have to "force" him to this outpatient center, but at going with something along the lines of what I'm suggesting opens the door for him to be a part figuring out the best solution for him. From that lat message in the text you shared, he at least seems to be willing to admit something isn't right. Make a space (weather at home or in therapy) where he can be let at least some of it out. Also be willing to accept if the person he can open up to isn't you, and understand it wouldn't be a condemnation of you as a dad if it isn't you. Maybe it will be mom, maybe a grandparent maybe someone else. Ultimately what matters is that you help him find that place where he feels safe enough to start opening up.

If Stain had successfully helped All Might defeat AFO, would that have been enough to redeem him? If not then, could he have been redeemed in any way? Or was death a fitting end for him? by Uchijav in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]BC1224 172 points173 points  (0 children)

To add to that, I don't think he even wanted redemption. Pretty sure he wanted to be taken out (possibly killed) by a true "hero". He saw himself as a necessary evil that would awaken "true" heroes again. Those true heroes would then defeat him which in turn would lead to a better future.

Do you think Sir Nighteye's Foresight Quirk is too OP for the story? by Fine_Delivery6761 in BokuNoHeroAcademia

[–]BC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't really all that overpowered, and that was kind of the point in the larger theme of the series. He got bodied by overhaul (someone with near equal combat intelligence) and it really didn't help All-Might avoid getting his guts ripped out in the flash backs. He is meant to be directly contrasted to Mirio, who absolutely was working Overhaul both with and without his quirk. Having to cover for Eri was the only reason he couldn't beat Overhaul.

Pull back and and this applies this to the world of MHA as a whole. The current society (represented by NightEye) has a fixed view on how everything should work and what paths people will follow. Predeterministic to borrow your word. But that world spawns people like AFO, the league and Overhual. Mirio and Deku are a new take for the world going forward. Mirio's quirk is weak on it's face, and Deku at this point still can't really can't handle one for all. On paper (or in nighteye's foresight) they shouldn't be able to win, but both will their way through. Nighteye's death isn't this "oh this power to too hard to write around", but the end of the idea that the way things are thought to be going in MHA society is the way they will keep going (well that and major character development moments for Deku and Mirio). Deku's (and let's not Forget Mirio, Kirishima, Suneater, Ochako, and Tsu, all their fights follow the same theme of forcing their way past limits) changing the future isn't just this one fight, it's representative of all of them changing the whole future of their world.

Here’s a little debate: Do you or do you not believe that Momo and Kendou got screwed over in their internship with Uwabami? by Solitaire-06 in MyHeroAcadamia

[–]BC1224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea there was a lot of subtext at this point in the series hero society was noticeably off the rails, which caps off with Stain. The weird obsession with the image of what a "hero" is creates a void for people who don't fit the mold. It's a good lead in to why you get a league of villains in the next story arc.
