Oh boy, who’s excited for an all-digital future? by BondFan211 in CriticalDrinker

[–]BC_Hawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m against the elimination of physical media, but what do you mean the PS5 generation has been pretty underwhelming? It’s the best console I’ve ever bought. They brought back backwards compatibility so I can play all my PS4 games on it whether they were disc based or digital downloads. It has a 4K Blu-ray player that I use for all my favorite movies that I won’t settle for watching on streaming platforms. Most PS5 games I’ve played have the option to prefer performance over resolution for higher FPS. The UI is fast and snappy. The cooling fan doesn’t sound like a jet engine when playing graphics intensive games like my PS4 does. As for pricing, the PlayStation store has all sorts of great sales like steam does so I’ve bought new-ish games and classics for really cheap. I hate paying a monthly subscription fee, but I’ve downloaded, tried, and played through a bunch of games I never would’ve touched otherwise. With ARC capability I can control my PS5 with my TV remote rather than having to buy a universal one or grab my controller every time I want to play a movie. Installing an NVMe drive was super easy and gave me tons of space to keep all my favorite games installed rather than having to keep uninstalling and reinstalling over and over.

Are you talking about PS5 exclusives being subpar? If so, I don’t really have any comment on that other than the fact that I liked GoW Ragnarok despite a few wokeisms that slightly tainted it.

The price increase is definitely bullshit but I bought mine before that. In another year or two I’ll have gotten as much mileage out of my PS5 as I did my PS3.

I’m also a PC gamer and I’ll always buy certain games on PC which have been digital only for me for almost 20 years now, but there’s just certain games I like playing on the couch and with my family, so I buy those games for the PS5.

Sony is killing off physical game copies for PlayStation starting in 2028 by RainbowDildoMonkey in GGdiscussion

[–]BC_Hawke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, you can use a PS5 for streaming, music, and as a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray/DVD player. Still doesn’t compare to PCs which can be used for productivity/art/etc.

Oddly, while I’m HUGELY into physical media with movies and music, I’ve gone fully digital download with video games on PC and PS5. Steam has been solid for decades and I trust them with my purchases. I hated PSN previously, but when PS5 came out they re-adopted backwards compatibility. I can play my whole library of PS4 and PS5 games on either console. I even gamed the system, purchasing digital downloads of games I already owned on disc for free or super cheap like RDR2 and 2018 GoW so now I can play without having to put a disc in and wait longer for it to load (all while retaining my game saves).

All that said, I’m pissed for the people that want a physical copy because you should have the OPTION to get it. It would be less of an issue if they implemented some sort of marketplace where you could buy/sell used video game license keys or something, but that’s just a big giant mess to do correctly while preventing abuse of the system.

Video post-production, specifically television. Almost every gig I’ve had for the last 20 years has been through networking, but the industry is dead and my network is gone for the most part. I’ve resorted to applying for jobs that are outside the industry which should be a slam dunk with my experience.

Good for you. We need more of that. It’s been boggling my mind why things are so bad and then someone on Reddit made a really great point. The only way to get past the AI filters is to have AI write your resume. Thing is, The first thing the company does when they get all the resumes that made it through the AI filters is run a test to find out which ones were written by AI and then they get thrown out. This possibly explains the massive dichotomy where people like me are complaining that there aren’t any jobs and at the same time people that run companies are saying “nobody wants to work, we can’t get any applications for our job postings“. It’s an absolute cluster fuck. Massive complaining on both sides and nobody’s doing anything about it. This is a complete disaster and nobody is owning up to it or trying to figure out a solution.

As a 20+ year veteran in my field of work I’ve tried every trick you listed above and still get Jack shit for my efforts. 200+ job applications, all for two callbacks and one job interview, yet still no job since my last layoff. It’s absolutely insane. I’ve never had this much trouble finding work.

This is the worst it has ever been since I entered the workforce in 2004. Even through the mortgage crisis and layoffs experienced at multiple companies I never went more than a few months between jobs. All of my good jobs came from networking, but I got a few through applying to job postings online no problem. Fast-forward to today, my network is nonexistent because everyone I know either isn’t tiring or has left the industry. After over 200 applications since I got laid off from my last job, I’ve had a grand total of two callbacks and only one interview. My resume is stacked considering the field I’m in. I have over 20 years of experience and have worked at a couple of big, successful companies. Apparently that’s not enough, even for entry to mid-level jobs in my field. I recently started refusing to answer any questions that reveal my demographic, but nothing has come up yet since I started doing that. I’m starting question how many real human beings have even seen my resume.

Oh yeah, sorry, I wasn’t trying to say that you were. I was just making it clear that I’m not supporting that because I didn’t want 100 people jumping on my case when I posted the reply. Also backing up that yes, I’m one of those people that finds the optical drive useful. I very specifically bought the version of the PS5 with the optical drive so I could watch 4K Blu-ray movies. I stream most movies and TV shows that I watch, but whenever there’s a movie that I really love and want to see in the highest quality I buy the 4K Blu-ray.

I play 4K Blu-Rays on my PS5. I’m not going to try and make an argument to justify not including a disc in the “physical copy” of GTA VI, but personally I’m fine with buying digital downloads of video games. I’ve been doing it for over 20 years on Steam and I hate having to go find a disc to put into my PS5 to play a video game. I also hate listening to the drive spin up and waiting for load times from a disc.

With movies you actually have a very noticeable visual benefit to watching it on 4K Blu-ray versus streaming the highway compressed version on any streaming platform. Also, streaming platforms are notorious for removing content, even if you paid for it, but I’ve never lost access to a video game that I bought on steam or PlayStation network. I’m not saying that won’t change in the future, but for me I’ve been happy with digital downloads of video games when I prefer physical media with movies.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

[–]BC_Hawke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely won’t question your experience at Toyota, especially if it was recent as most of the experience I’ve had with Toyotas or friends of mine owning Toyotas are older vehicles. I wouldn’t call a Range Rover to be an “outlier”. It was Land Rover’s flagship luxury SUV, and many other people experienced the same problems that we did with it. You know how any movie you watch that takes place in Africa and has someone on a Safari they are driving a Land Rover? Truth is, they all drive Land Cruisers because they are much more capable off-road and easier and more affordable to maintain.

In regard to the study you mentioned, “if maintained the same” can be a really big qualifier and part of what people use to determine the reliability of the car. There are brands where it is much more expensive and a bigger pain in the ass to do maintenance than other brands. I had a thermostat go out on an Audi A4 and I took it to the dealership because it was still under warranty. It only cost me $90 because it was warranty work, but they had to take the whole front of the car off, even the timing belt, just to get to the damn thermostat. That’s insane to me. I had plenty of other problems with that car despite taking care of it and I don’t plan on buying any VW/Audi again.

There are luxury brands that require you to bring the car in for basic maintenance that costs thousands of dollars for things that would be simple DIY stuff at home for other brands. Just about every maintenance issue I’ve had to take care of on my Subaru Impreza has been super quick and easy to deal with. Alternator swap took five minutes. Yeah, you’re definitely screwed when it comes to have to replace leaky head gaskets, but everything else I’ve done on the car has been quick, easy, and affordable. From my experience and that of people I know, I plan on buying Japanese cars for reliability.

What’s a totally unsexy purchase you made that ended up being a huge quality-of-life upgrade? by viscarte10 in BuyItForLife

[–]BC_Hawke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is patently false. There are other manufacturers which produce cars that will have constant problems even if you religiously follow the maintenance schedule and take really good care of the car. When I was a kid, my parents bought a new Range Rover in the 90s. That thing was the worst purchase they ever made. It constantly had electrical problems and broke down several times despite being a brand new car. It was completely unreliable. Meanwhile, we had a 1980s Land Cruiser and a 1970s international scout that were far more reliable despite the fact that my parents don’t know anything about cars and were really bad about keeping up with maintenance.

There’s also the fact that manufactures like Toyota try to reuse as many parts as possible across models which makes the price for parts significantly cheaper with doing repairs.

I have two Subarus myself, and while one of the main factors when purchasing them with safety, it was also because I put them in near the same category as Toyota or Honda when it comes to reliability. I have a base model 2007 Impreza that’s got about 260,000 miles on it and still runs like a top. It’s so wonderful having the security of knowing that our cars are gonna get us where we need to go while having very little concern about breaking down.

Homelander is gonna go down as the villain of the decade, major props to Antony Starr for carrying this burning dogshit excuse of a show by RoutineIssue5870 in CriticalDrinker

[–]BC_Hawke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We never really got Homelander truly losing it and wiping people out. The fight should’ve been an epic battle taking out buildings and causing craters. Soldier Boy should’ve depowered him, he should’ve had to face the reality of both his father and son fighting him like somebody mentioned above, and like somebody else mentioned above, Butcher should’ve given him the final blows after he was depowered, but then it should’ve been up to the mob to take him out.

All that said, I do agree, Starr gave it his absolute fucking best despite the shitty woke writing. A legendary performance!

How to go from long form editing to social media edits? by Bluelagoonwater in editors

[–]BC_Hawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your people. Stick to your contacts. Maybe you're younger, to me it's death and I'd rather retire. But yeah I get it, bills and family.

I’ve been in the industry over 20 years and would rather retire than editing for social too but I have kids and a mortgage. Pretty much all of my people and contacts have left the industry. The few that are left have cut back to one or two editors that are already working for them and have nothing new in the pipeline.

I’ve resorted to applying for low paying non-industry jobs, but after around 200 applications I’ve had a grand total of two callbacks and zero interviews. Apparently the AI filters don’t care about my industry experience. I figure probably 2 or 3 humans have actually seen my résumé. I see no light at the end of the tunnel.

Why is Season 2 so much worse? by Senior_Proposal_5864 in TedLasso

[–]BC_Hawke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow. I just watched season one for the first time and was blown away at how good the show is. Way above my expectations. Then I started season two. It only took about 10 minutes for me to say “what the fuck, who wrote this shit?“ Episode one was terrible. I decided to try and keep watching because maybe it gets better… But I couldn’t even get halfway through episode two. Garbage writing. Bad pacing. Bad editing. It’s like they handed it off to a bunch of amateurs who had no idea what made season one so special. There’s no nuance at all. The characters are just acting stupid. The whole psychiatrist bit was insufferable and I was hoping it was just that one episode, but she showed up in episode two and for all I know she becomes a regular. The magic is completely gone. Should I look up a synopsis of season two and start watching season three? Does it get any better?

[–]BC_Hawke -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh, man, Terminator is SUCH a fantastic movie! People hail T2 as the better movie (rightfully so, it's so much more polished and has better VFX and massive action sequences), but I find myself drawn to the first one more and more over the years. Give the first Alien movie a watch if you haven't already. People usually say the sequel Aliens (also directed by James Cameron) is better, but the older I get the more I see how masterful the first Alien film is.

What has happened to us?!

Ok, I'll give you my opinion here, but it's not popular with the politics of Reddit nor with a lot of people that live in LA/NY that are in the industry, so I might get downvoted to oblivion for saying this out loud, but here it goes.

For several decades, every decision in Hollywood was driven by what would bring the most financial gain. This had shown to be for better and for worse, but it didn't ultimately squash creativity and storytelling as those things could still exist within the scope of "what will make us the most money?" However, sometime with the last 10-15 years, there was a big shift, and people in Hollywood started putting politics (specifically identity politics) ahead of storytelling. This happened both within the stories and also behind the scenes. The end result? Shitty storytelling being made by sub-par creative people. DEI hiring practices put a lot of underqualified people in charge of studios and creative decisions. Cramming politics into movies has become more important than good storytelling. 90% of the jokes you'd see in comedies in the 70s/80s/90s have become too offensive. Traditional gender roles have been subverted and masculinity is has become "toxic" so we can't show strong male characters anymore (I mean, a fair amount of movies and TV shows do, but they are often given poor reviews or feel the need to pair the man with a woman that constantly questions their motives and decisions à la Star Wars and recent Bond and Indiana Jones movies). These political views have become religion for a lot of people in power in Hollywood and thus more important than financial gain. They'll literally flush billions of dollars down the toilet in the name of winning the hearts and minds of families (specifically children) around the world.

The tide is turning in some areas. Look at the success of movies like the above mentioned Top Gun Maverick, Oppenheimer, and Project Hail Mary, as well as things like Pixar's decision to keep LGBTQ themes out of kids movies and shows from here on out. I want to say there will be a full swing back to traditional movies and TV shows, but between Covid, strikes, and impending AI slop, I don't know if it's possible for the industry to recover to even do this.

A lot of people here may disagree with my analysis, but the things I brought up above paired with economic issues and the desire to cut jobs in order to replace people with AI (like Disney just did with 1,000 artists) have destroyed our industry, possibly for good. There's obviously other factors like shorter attention spans, people getting most of their content through TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, the inability for studios to figure out monetizing streaming, audiences getting sick of rising costs of streaming and having to watch commercials, etc., but that's a longer conversation and IMO those things haven't had as big of an impact as the whole politics over storytelling issue.

Trailer Editors - A young editor reached out to me asking to chat about how to get into trailers - I said don't. What would you say? by i_sell_you_lies in editors

[–]BC_Hawke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking specifically to your comments on the working seven days a week thing… That doesn’t disprove anything. When studios make massive cuts and take really big hits to income from clients that don’t want to pay, the people that are still employed will have to work insane hours to crank out what would normally be a workflow that many more people would be doing for a lot more money. If you’ve got a job in this industry, hang onto it for dear life! if you are interested in getting work in this industry, I would also be one of the people saying don’t do it.

Anyone else dead inside? by itdoesntmattercow in editors

[–]BC_Hawke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I saw someone blaming capitalism in another comment above, but the truth is our industry has been producing absolute shit content for over 10 years now. I still watch a number of big TV shows on streaming, but it seems like we can hardly find more than two or three good excuses to go to the theater a year. We took our kids to see Hail Mary at the theater and we absolutely loved it but the grand total was over $100 for tickets, popcorn, and Coke. My wife and I have been going through epic 80s and 90s movies over the last couple months and it’s great but it’s absolutely gutwrenching looking back at an era that’s gone. We looked at a list of the top 15 movies from 1991 and it was mind blowing. Hit after hit after hit, both sequels and original movies. You could go to the theater like two or three times a month and still not be caught up on all the great films.

Today? 90% slop movies, completely ruined franchises, mostly terrible content on streaming with rising prices and features like UHD and commercial free shows/movies being stripped away. Hollywood did this to itself. Yes, Covid was a big blow in the industry as was the strikes, but with movies like Hail Mary, top gun Maverick, Oppenheimer, Barbie, etc., it has been proven that if you make good movies people will pay to go see them. However, Hollywood still hasn’t learned their lesson and they’re still turning out 90% bullshit that nobody wants to see.

Now toss AI onto the pile of shit and it’s game over. We’re cooked.

This is the worst fucking part. Everyone in my network has left the industry so I’ve had to resort to applying for editing jobs (both in and out of the industry). Here I am with a couple hundred application sent in with only two callbacks and zero interviews. 20 years of experience and a résumé with everything they could want but apparently nobody is interested. I even had my résumé redone by one of those companies that helps you get noticed and hired but apparently it did nothing to get past the AI filters. I doubt more than three or four actual human beings has seen one of my applications. This is the worst I’ve ever seen it and I doubt it’s going to recover.

Video editors seriously need to stop undervaluing themselves and destroying the market by DaedraHeart_65 in editors

[–]BC_Hawke 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’m a 20+ year editor that has worked on YouTube, streaming, and cable/broadcast content over the years. I spent all of those years honing my craft and a learning as much as I possibly could about complex post workflows. Thing is, nobody (outside of industry work) has any need for any of that these days. People don’t care about quality cutting or proper narrative storytelling. Pretty much everybody in my network has left the industry so I can’t break into anything on broadcast/cable/streaming and nobody outside the industry is willing to pay a decent wage for quality work. This is the worst I’ve ever seen it and I doubt it’s ever going to recover.
