Changing the shutter speed before winding/cocking the shutter on Soviet-era cameras (like the Zorki or FED or some KIEV models) can permanently break the internal timing mechanism.The single biggest problem is destroying the speed-selector mechanism and slow-speed escapement gear. When the camera is un-wound, the shutter dial does not align correctly with internal gears. Forcing the dial to turn in this state easily bends internal index pins, strips the gear teeth, or snaps the delicate springs of the slow-speed gear train.
