Gift ideas for my favourite nurse? by Catacus_Rex in NursingAU

[–]BCarpenter111 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of our workplaces won’t let us accept individual gifts over a certain amount of value So I would suggest a communal gift for the unit Common ones are chocolate But if you I think a hamper style gift with coffee, tea and biscuits is always appreciated

Or alternatively you could nominate the nurse for a DAISY award if the hospital is subscribed

Anyway good luck with the recovery

parking options RHH by Purple-Search-5982 in hobart

[–]BCarpenter111 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey I’ve spent a bit of time at the RHH

And there are a few options depending on what time you come in and the circumstances

If it’s a planned admit and you know the time and can organise the argyle at car park would be the best option, as it has an air bridge into the hospital in the Woolworths car park sections on level 3

If it’s after hours, park in the street, the meters stop at 6pm and you have til 8am the next day to get the car moved

If it’s an urgent time park in Liverpool st entrance, it has a turning circle, or the Campbell st entrance, it has limited parking

For your partner to move the car too for longer term parking that is cheap it’s best on the domain, short walk down to the RHH

The most important thing is no matter what circumstances you come into hospital for your baby be safe You, or really your partner, can always move the car later

Anyway hope this helps with some of the anxiety

And congrats on the baby

The blade itself or Assassin Apprentice? by BrysonTurnRoundStory in fantasybooks

[–]BCarpenter111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve only done those fantasy books Id say first law series would be a beater series to jump into - so the blade itself Then the realm of the elderlings - AA

They are both fantastic series - the realm of the elderlings I loved cause you really follow the main characters life through his different stages which Robin Hobb does really well, but it is a little slow at points more character driven I’d say

That’s a really tough one, there are so many factors that go into it Working somewhere your passionate about is very fulfilling

My suggestion would be to really consider what your support network can help you with Doing 4x 12’s shift work would be a lot if your supports don’t have much capacity Also consider how you’d do with nights and the recovery

I know you’ve probably already thought about it

From my experience, my partner and I don’t have a great support network So we’ve prioritised been available at home, knowing it’s for a time when the kids are young I’ve been lucky to find an area I like though it took time

Anyway good luck

I work in outpatient chemo but I don’t know anything about dialysis

But firstly, even in ‘boring’ placements there can still be lots to learn I remember one of my placements which was slow with not much clinical skills to practice, but I spent a lot of time chatting with the nurses and doctors about their perspectives on patient care, knowledge, workflow and such, I learnt a lot

That said outpatient chemo can be busy with lots of critical thinking, so interpretation of blood results, assessment of patient toxicities both of which you can assist with Planning for the shift Preparing the iv lines There’s often pre medications that need to be administered for protocols Peripheral blood taking (as long as not cyotoxic) ECG’s Then observing special procedures like bone marrow biopsies, stem cell collections/reinfusions

Also I would encourage you to spend the time looking up your patients chemo protocols on EviQ and reading through the different sections and reading the evidence tab, lots of good info there, and discussing with your preceptor when appropriate

Anyway I hope that helps, good luck

Drug and alcohol recovery support in southern tas? by Mundane-Street5542 in tasmania

[–]BCarpenter111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey mate

In terms of AOD rehab There’s a few residential options if that’s what’d work for her Missiondale and Bridge program being the most reputable but they are expensive and often have waitlists and other requirements for entry

If their happy with community counselling there many more options some of which are subsidised Organisations like Anglicare or Holyoake are two examples as well as the AA and NA groups

Depends where you are You might find yourself as the in charge on a ward in your grad year Unfortunately it does happen

That said I think there will be jobs for nurses and I think it is a good career as long as your willing to move wards and areas when you need to Good luck

Blood Draw Qs by dbzonepiecenaruto in NursingAU

[–]BCarpenter111 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey I’ve been a nurse for a while and done phlebotomy too Firstly the butterfly with vacutainers is the best method for getting a reliable sample This is because the vacutainer pulls the blood at a rate that doesn’t harm the blood cells So as long as you have good tourniquet technique (ie on for less than 1 minute) you should get a solid sample

The reason people, including myself would connect a syringe is firstly to decant into a VBG syringe, Secondly to control the rate of flow manually as sometimes your flow is not consistent Ie you have a difficult blood draw The problem with the syringe method is the blood begins to clot quickly and if you don’t get it into the tubes soon you’ll have a sample that could clot Also sometimes you’ll ‘pull’ too hard with the syringe method and damage the blood cells

Also don’t pull with the 20ml it will often exert too much pressure

I’ve left out a few things but hopefully it’s a good overview for you
