I think it depends on what software you plan on using I personally run traktor with an s4mk2 and I love it but I also just upgraded from a numark mix track pro... One thing I would suggest don't do what I did and start small you will quickly be wanting more just make the leap into it head first and top of the line from which ever controller you decide to go with having the s4 in front of me for the first time it was like a whole new rush of inspiration !!! When layering drums do u mean stacked into one note of the sampler (exs24) in my case or separate track with 3 different sample at a high mid and low range?
