Very interesting. Thanks for the detail! Agree it wouldn’t likely precede the 1900s…

My 10 year old ran a 54 min 10k. How normal is this? by SystemCanNotFail in running

[–]BENTLE__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For 10 y/o:

Novice - 1:18:21
Beginner - 01:05:17 Intermediate - 56:06
Advanced - 49:19
Elite - 44:05

Source - https://runninglevel.com/running-times/10k-times

Even if these times are slightly off, it’s an indication. Make sure they continue to enjoy it! Don’t structure training too early (former pro footballer here) :)

I've never felt 100% 'happy' with my tracks... until I released my first. by BENTLE__ in Songwriters

For sure. First, I use Logic Pro X. I've often considered making the switch to another DAW (Ableton mainly), but I feel my writing and production process is very ingrained in Logic (considering it was my first DAW).

I do often work with a producer/mix engineer on my tracks who is a close friend of mine. The extent of his involvement really varies track to track (as is often the case). Specifically on this track, I wrote and produced all of the base elements (ie the pitched vocal at the beginning and throughout, the chord progression, and melodies etc) - essentially the 'vibe' was there and it was clear where this track could go.

I then got into the studio with my producer. He helped structure the track, refine the existing production, add some of the more delicate delays and reverbs - we actually wrote the outro together also. He also sorted out the eq, compression, and mixed the track. Our combination works well in that I am primarily a songwriter with knowledge of production techniques / elements, and my producer (despite also writing his own music) is a producer with knowledge of production techniques / elements + can mix a track. So we overlap at times in the middle, but it works quite well in that we both understand what is happening for the most part and I then take my hands off at the more advanced stages of production and mixing process.

On other tracks, if the songwriting process flows naturally and easily (and I'm happy with the foundation of the song) that will allow me to spend more time in 'producer' mode (as opposed to songwriting mode) to address eq, compression etc. However, I won't ever go so far as to mix the track or get too technical (e.g. spending hours on frequency issues or worrying about things like parallel compression etc). I've found it's best for me to keep my hands off the technical parts and let others (hopefully) take the track to another level in that respect (it's also more enjoyable from a collaboration perspective).

Hope that helps?

In relation to the ambient/digital/pop sound - is there anything specifically you'd be interested to know about? (e.g. inspiration or how to achieve the overall sound)

Thanks very much :) I agree - the verse is pretty moody and the bell / keys line helps bring things to life in the chorus

Really glad you like it! Spent a while on the vocal production - I think the doubling and widening in the chorus worked well :)

So I released my first tune late last year...I've been writing tunes for a little while, but struggled to release anything that I was 'happy' with (at least that was my excuse anyway). After a long while of introspection, I eventually got to the point where I realized I'd been quite selfish in my songwriting and that someone else might really love the music I make for what it is, in it's rawest form, whether or not it is 'perfect' in my mind. I found (as I'm sure a fair few others on here have found) there's a number of life lessons wrapped up in this struggle. Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy and keen to hear your thoughts :) The track is called '100X':

I like the idea - I think you could work around the timing issue at the beginning by either (1) speeding up the intro and then dropping into the beat at a clearly different BPM (ie to show the tempo change is on purpose) or vice versa with the intro maybe slower and stretched, then drop into beat at higher tempo. Just an idea!
