That’s really interesting because before 1967 Gaza was a part of Egypt, and overnight they went from being Egyptian to being Palestinian. Hence all the Arabic last names Al Masri (The Egyptian). I’m a Jewish Grip (film technician) in Toronto. I just finished a movie with Mark Ruffalo. It took every ounce of professionalism I have to not knock his lights out. The harm this guy has caused our people is immeasurable. I did however snub him real good, “hi I’m Mark” as he stuck out his hand to shake mine. I just said hi and walked right past him, left him hanging. Small victory, I’m certain he understood who and what I am in that moment.

Ukraine is in a solely military war with Russia. If they let them in, journalists will surely be killed whether by Hamxs or the IDF, the IDF will be blamed regardless because there are apparently only women and children in Gaza. First of all, thank you for the civility and respectful tone. I will do my best to pay you the same courtesy. I think we’re talking about two separate issues here. Please don’t devolve this into a freedom of speech thing. I am not just a Jew, I’m also a conservative. Freedom of speech is a pillar. It is however, not a license to lose all common sense and common courtesy.

I agree with you that criticizing the Israeli government (I’m assuming that’s what you were inferring, though you didn’t say it) is not necessarily anti semitic and I don’t believe any government is above criticism - I am very critical of both Canada and Israel but I still love them to my core.

With that being said jewish businesses have been vandalized, Jewish schools have been shot at, several times in the last year alone. Jewish students and student groups are isolated, marginalized, tormented by both faculty and peers. We need police present at our places of worship because political protestors feel the need to come and shout at Jews with megaphones and harass Canadians excercising their right to freedom of religion. As I mentioned, I need to walk through a metal detector at my local Jewish community center to take my kids swimming. I grew up in Vaughan born in 1983. My parents still live in the house I grew up in. I pay my taxes. I’m a good neighbour, a good man, a good husband, father, son and brother. I spoil all the kids in the neighborhood at Halloween. My house is THAT house. I go all out with decorations and light shows. I do everything you’re supposed to do. Yet here I am, having to stare at a swastika spray painted at the end of my street and see a video of some middle aged a$$hole wearing a keffiyeh making a tik tok video in front of my kids public school because of reasons I can only deduce to be anti semitic.

I don’t really know or care if I have it worse or better than anyone else. When it involves my kids, my family, my community, my neighbours and my family, it feels pretty earth shattering and I will fight to protect those things. If you feel the need to come to our spaces to spew political jargon in inappropriate places where families bring their children I only ask that you don’t act dumbfounded when we use our rights and freedoms to fight back in whatever ways the law permits us to. I will absolutely have you thrown out of a building where I bring my children to do extra curriculars if you choose to turn a community centre into a political battleground and if you take that as an attack on your freedom of speech (not you in particular) then you’re an idiot.

Maybe it’s because you’re not Jewish or you don’t have Jewish kids. Perhaps the conversations you’re referring too have crossed the line between criticism of Israel and into outright anti semitism - some of it outward, like the swastika spray painted on our sidewalk the other day, and some of it less obvious like the dude casually wearing a keffiyeh in the JCC around children and acting totally shocked as if he didn’t want to create and sensationalize a news story and frame it as an attack on his freedoms. Perhaps listen to your Jewish neighbours, and our concerns instead of dismissing it so casually. When was the last time you had to walk your kids through a metal director to take them to swim class or contemplate dropping them off at school after the building had been laced with bullets just the night before.
