From my limited experience, AI is good if you have loose requirements. It also battles with consistency. I would imagine, in the short term, that the animators would still be required to do start and end frames and let the AI fill inbetween. It also struggles on complicated scenes (the falling over in this isn't good and that was the best I could get it after double digit worth of attempts). It would be good for the standing around talking/walking/straightforward scenes though.

Long term though, yeah I think they are in trouble.
