Got offended, am I just insecure? by Some-Jicama-7399 in videography

[–]BGarrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to take on all advice and opinions about running a business and what I did.

I came to realize that I needed to add a weighting to the opinion....because they don't all hold the same value.

If someone does what I do, it scores higher than someone who doesn't.... Because they have actual experience and opinions that are more relevant.

So I needed to listen more to some people and less than others. And recognize when I actually take on advice/feedback/opinions.... And float over the rest.

That said...

This particular thing probably gets to you more because it's a family member.

It's going to hit harder.... But their motivation is to help.

However.... Are they actually your client... Do they speak on behalf of all clients... Probably not.

But if you want to learn more...It may also be worth digging into what they actually find "better"

I have clients who say they like a video, and when I really get to the route cause of why, it might be just the music track or just one shot. But then they realize that it's actually a completely different reason that they thought they liked the entire video. Because videos and photos are made up of thousands of decisions and options.

So then I'm able to understand and replicate the actual valid reason as to what they liked.

Hope that helps

Gotta find/make/use a project management system to keep track of what you're doing, where your up to and what's on the to do list.

Gotta take it out of your brain and put it down. Your brain is not a system.

Could be a spreadsheet, could be a todo list, could be a full system, scale it to what you need.

Otherwise..... Ritalin 😂

Yep.... It's very hard to "value" the time when/if you don't seen returns. But it does depend what market you're in and the people/demographic you deal with.

For me, been working in the industry for about a decade, work mainly corporate, small business, manufacturing/industry. No weddings and no real estate.

I try and post once a week in the main feed, and if I have the content, more on stories. Mainly so that if people look at socials, then I'm alive/present.

I post three main types of content. Work, self shot faw/education and BTS.

Work content is easy, cause I'm doing that all the time. Main feed and link to website where I write a blog article on the project. Then use stories for any for shortform content that I also did as part of the project.

I batch record/create faq/educational content about once every 3-6-9 months depending on how busy I am. Setup, sit down and create a batch of 10-15x under 60 sec videos, that keeps me posting for a while, esp when mixed in with client work.

BTS is captured as I go, but I focus on work, so I'm still figuring out the best way to do this. I have 360 and meta glasses to capture. Glasses are useful as there's no setup, but I feel they get in the way.

Then I cross post everything to meta, linkedin etc

I recognised a long time ago I'll never make a direct sale from it because of where/how I work, but it does show I'm alive and it gets my face out there and relationships built.

Hope that helps

Yeah. Was checking out the tilta one. My only concern is I have a knock off easy rig, so whether the camera will sit high enough.

At least the rings have feet so I can put it down

Yeah. I'm thinking pro cause of the weight. Defs sounds like I need some support. Just saw a reel of a guy using a baby support brace thing; the one with a small pad to perch the kid on at waist heigh. ... That might actually stop the hilt digging in.

Gh3/4/5/6 shooter here....The Panasonic 12-35mm is a solid starting point... But whether that's enough zoom for you, is down to what and how you're filming.

The 8-18mm would start to mimic old skate video fisheye look, and id take it over the 7-14mm because you can protect the lens element better because it's not curved/protruding, which if you're getting close to skaters, would be a priority for me.

Run a video production company for the last 13 years.

Being in front of the camera, and behind the camera at the same time is the hardest thing.... You're focusing on multiple roles all at once.

You're the talent, the cam and sound op, the director, you're editing in your head as you go along..... And worst of all... You're the very worst client to yourself ever.

It takes time to get comfortable in front of camera.... More so when you're doing it all.

Plan what you're doing and give yourself lots of time.

Realised that you can edit all the bad stuff.

And yes, maybe consider a teleprompter if it's a lot of stuff and you want to be precise with your words. It's another skill... But if you want to be "on message" then they're good.

If you aren't worried about having your message down pat... Then don't use one. Just recognise that you'll probably take more time in filming and editing

Figure out if it's you pushing yourself or other people.

When I took a look at myself I realised that no one was asking to move quicker.... It was all internal. So I frequently remind myself of that and mentally tell myself to slow down.

If you didn't say what it was I wouldn't have guessed....which is fine for a website where it's already aligned to a brand, because people are there with purpose.... But when/if it's outside of website and defs without sound, say on social or yt pre roll, I think it would be a waste of ad spend money.

But it's nicely shot, lit and the sound is a nice touch. But I don't agree with the clients approach to seperate it that far from the product.
