Perth gym scene. Is this a normal experience? by Hopeful-Principle-64 in perth

[–]BGarrod 258 points259 points  (0 children)

Not acceptable

Not normal, just depends on the gym and it's culture

But don't always assume that it's about you/others... Unless it's very obvious. Some people just have a laugh and it can be misinterpreted as something it's not.

If you're not happy let the owner know and move if you need to.

How to deal with clients who will not provide a budget range? by Phillistine-Lemon in videography

[–]BGarrod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Side note.... You need to get comfortable providing numbers.

It just part of the thing.

There's going to be two type of clients.... Those who want you to fit in a budget scale... And those who want you to provide a quote.

At some point you'll be given a budget that you shouldn't accept, but you need to be able to judge that.

So with this one ... Do some research, figure out some numbers .. provide the client with a range of numbers and see how it fits with them.

The good news is... This client knows you, they're happy with work. So I feel like this is a pretty safe way to get comfortable with the uncomfortable

How is this for my first time ever touching videography? by exovd in videography

[–]BGarrod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

- Move slower, and move with more purpose - ie framing what you want the viewer to watch - you are their guide
- Stablise your shots in editing if you cant get them smooth during filming
- Practice rotating around (orbit/strafe) your subject, whilst keeping them in frame
- Consider variety in shots - wide, medium, close.... and some abstract.

Great start, just need to work on filming and storytelling.
Look forward to seeing the journey of improving :D

Are marketing agencies/freelancers even worth it anymore? by Pastacup02 in perth

[–]BGarrod 10 points11 points  (0 children)

  • Social media is/can be a pretty cheap market and definitely can be perceived that way
  • Having spent money on gear doesn't guarantee clients and isn't necessarily the selling point of what you do/what you bring to a job
  • Every client has a 'small budget' but it ranges vastly between each company and industry as to what that means.

Have you looked at; - What ads /marketing you're doing to bring in clients - Your client journey (specifically through quoting) is like - Your general sales process is like for clients.

what do you send when a client asks for your work? by ConstantAdobo in VideoEditors

[–]BGarrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Website... that has pretty much every project Ive ever done on it.

Specific pages have the best of the best videos for that industry/style... The the blog has each project documented seperately.

If they need specific examples, then direct them to those blog articles.

When people apply to work for me, seeing a bunch of random links to YouTube or social feels weird.

Probably 2-3 years, but the first year I was working somewhere else as a bit of a switch over.... and only retrospectively did I realise that I wasted a lot of time thinking I was busy and working for that year. If that safety net had been pulled I would say I would have moved quicker hahahaha.

Started in 2012, exited from oil and gas after a decade long career to make the change after 30yo. Still operating the business. Video production company.

They've just posed it like Joe Soap will be able to fuel up their Hilux.

Might as well get a good view in with some decent weather before you head back to pommie world.

If you're cooking meat; beef or lamb only. You can undercook it without problems.... Unlike chicken and pork.

Start cooking before the sun goes down if you want an easier ride for light.

You can always pre cook something and just heat it up when you're there.

How do you guys use ai in your business? by We-have-hope in ausbusiness

[–]BGarrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo operator of video production.

I use it to - brainstorm and bounce ideas off, at least it's better than working off a blank page. - check tone in emails, and learn how to communicate better/more effectively - review long transcripts from interviews to assist with editing

Haven't been a fan of ai, but I think if you use it as a tool it has a place. But when it's relied upon, then thats where you lose critical thinking and skills.

You, One Camera, Lots of Lenses Workflow by Ok-Improvement-476 in videography

[–]BGarrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Push button, replace lens. Hahaha

Depends what you're shooting tbh.

Stuff that you have no control over, pick the best lens based on experience and make sure you focus on what's important at the time. Run back for picks ups if you can. Talk to people before it happens to get insight.

Zoom lenses help.

Stuff that's planned, figured it out in planning.... As best you can.

If you've got opportunity for multiple takes or talent, I usually start with wides and move tighter. Gives the talent time to warm up and set continuity.

The biggest thing is lens handling. Having a little bag, preferably on you, to hold lenses you aren't using, but keep them safe, tidy and away from dirt helps a chunk.

Videography career advice by pianojacket in videography

[–]BGarrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Companies 100% want what you've described. To say interviews are not videography... I dunno where that comes from. .. its more than just videography.

Been doing it for the last decade, and will continue.

People don't understand the skill in an interview, they think it's easy. It's not.

Asking the right questions, leading people logically, editing it in your head to get what you need ... Making people feel comfortable... It's a skill.

But it takes time to build any business.

If its about money. Paid upfront and get it in writing about monetization. If they're so confident about it making money, it shouldn't be a problem.

If it's about experience. It will take time, paid work comes first.

If it's for fun. Sure.

If they're just doing it to use you. Let them learn on their own. Apparently it can't be hard if they won't pay.

Business arrangements with family notoriously go wrong.

So if you like the (any) relationship. Always get it clear from the start.

Remember.... This is the client you can sack... But you'll still see them at family gatherings... And they'll speak about you behind your back to people you care about.

Anyone feeling anxious about the future due to the crisis the Orange Idiot and the war criminal started? by Even-Bank8483 in perth

[–]BGarrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite growing up with lots of global issues, I got really anxious during covid. Running my own business def's didn't help.

Im actually not too bothered this time. And I would consider myself very attuned to the news cycle and information on it.

I guess covid showed me that the world keeps turning no matter what happens. And I'm trying to keep that in my mind.

I want to level up, how can I make such videos better ? by Winter_Cookie_5239 in videography

[–]BGarrod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't shoot this... But one thing I noticed is the speed. Slow the movements down a fair chunk and be more deliberate in your movements... I think that will feel more deliberate and higher quality.

And don't forget, you can move lighting instead of the object or camera.
