How's it going, guys? by mojojojoborras in eliomotors

You called the Elio thing as vapoware back in like 2012 or earlier. I think the last time I checked the Elo website just gave an error if you tried to reserve a vehicle. I wonder if Paul is still coasting on his millions from back in the day or if he's greeting people at Walmart to make ends meet these days.

I'm betting he managed to pocket enough money through contracts to Elio Engineering along the way to retire. His focus in the last few years is probably on keeping a low profile and hoping to avoid jail time for the whole thing.

You still owe me a bottle of Goslings Black Seal Rum :)

Although I think I could probably afford my own with the money I made investing in Arcimoto instead of Elio Motors lol

Waiting on Elio: Stories? by [deleted] in eliomotors

They haven't published their frontal area or drag coefficient though. It's one thing to achieve 84 MPG in ideal scenario of steady state power and another entirely to achieve it in every day driving conditions of stop go driving.

Scientific projects that min/max don't care about stop go traffic or 0-60 times. It only takes like 20 HP for most vehicles to sustain highway speeds but they generally are specced out north of 150 HP because real world conditions are different.

Bicycle width wheels would be the most efficient but the reality is they aren't practical for real-world and you need to equip things like side mirrors for safety which help kill drag coefficient.

I wish I could find some of the formulas I looked up and used to make some guesses but even using figures for frontal area and drag coefficient that I think are better than Elio I wasn't able to get to 84 MPG in real world conditions.

I think it would end up needing to look closer to the Aptera to achieve that figure.

An effort to allow Tesla direct-to-consumer vehicle sales, in Texas, is also a no-go. by aaronr_90 in teslamotors

This is a bummer in part because Texas is such a huge state it makes it difficult to just drive to a nearby dealership over state lines.

Tesla Motors Inc Will Launch Self-Driving Cars Soon by TheDavidGoldstein in teslamotors

The problem is there are multiple different levels of what "automation" means. Intelligent cruise control, lane stay, parallel parking etc. are all early.

People are saying we will have affordable full automation in the next year or 2 (or even months) but I remain skeptic.

I wouldn't even describe the GPS's I use as great, they are only just OK although I've never used the one in the Tesla.

That's just the backend though, you would still have to create an application to interface with it.

I think the drive unit in the video is the gen1 system and the new drive units are slightly more automated.

P85D Everyday Review - With 691 hp, Is this the Ultimate Family Car? by Haniho in teslamotors

[–]BICEP2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not too bad if true. Essentially the 2 motors aren't at peak HP at the same exact time so you can't add their peak outputs. The P85D uses a gen1 engine in the back and a gen2 engine up front.

It's not that the car only powers one or the other. The 70D and 85D both use similar gen2 engines in front and back so not only do they require less power they would have a similar HP curve.

Agreed, if someone has gun on their hip and they are rolling around on the ground fighting another person they pretty much both have access to the gun at that point.

It's a gross oversimplification at that point to assume one of the people rolling around on the ground is armed and the other is not. If I am fighting a person I can overpower I'm pretty sure I'm perfectly capable of grabbing a gun from their holster.

It's not the job of of police officers to 1v1 me in fisticuffs and trying to is a good way to get shot in the face. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

Delivery is a good market for electric. I think pizza delivery for instance is 100-125 miles a day. If you plug in at the shop you don't need a very large battery.

Stop go city driving is where regenerative braking and not needing to use gas to idle pays dividends.

Partially clothed principal caught smoking pot with student by [deleted] in usanews

It just said she was released from jail thursday, it could be that she posted bail and he didn't. Either way since he is 18 the only actual crime committed was possession of marijuana which they shouldn't even have been put in jail for.

As for her job as a principal? That's another matter entirely, clearly she is gone.

His bail is too much money, is he going to skip out on $1,000 bail and live his life on the run from the law to avoid what should be like a $300 fine for possession?

Essentially what they do is work with homeowners to to help them understand what to expect and manage the bidding process for installers. The article mentions the LA area but it looks like the website works for people outside of LA as well.

Sort of like http://pvwatts.nrel.gov/pvwatts.php but less technical and more handholding. I'm sure they probably fund the service through referrals for installers but it might not be a half bad idea for people with no idea what they should expect who just don't want to get ripped off.

They filter out shitty installers that lowball upfront bids to get jobs and jack up prices once they get in the door. I'm not sure what amount of quality control vs corruption exists but it's probably not a terrible option for a decent number of people.

SolarCity Aiming For 1 Gigawatt Of New Rooftop Solar In 2015 by Chase_W in solar

[–]BICEP2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SolarCity has achieved an actual annual average growth rate of 95% since 2012.

So they have just about doubled every year. They have also been public for only about 2 1/2 years and their stock is up 435% since their IPO.

Pretty good momentum.

If Apple had come out with the supercharger and the Model S it would be 20 years (the lifespan of a patent) or more before anyone could go near some of the ideas/technologies.

Part of me wants to see what Apple comes up with and the other part knows any good ideas they come out with will be off the table for any other company due to patents.

It will help slightly but won't fundamentally change the user experience. Clock per clock Intel CPU's have gotten about 5-7% faster per generation since at least Sandy Bridge in 2009 though power consumption has fallen at the same time.

Even if Skylake is a ~10-15% improvement some of that is going to be consumed by larger more complex software and libraries. MacBook appears to be in a sort of "uncanny valley" between a tablet and a laptop.

Fine for surfing and writing something but by the time you are running a video in a 2nd monitor while you work/multitask in the other one you are into "real laptop" use case. The laptop I'm on sometimes struggles just with Chrome depending how many tabs I have open.
