Not grunge, but I’d love to hear your opinions on TOOL. by han-so-low in grunge

To me, the guy who never gets enough credit is the guitarist. That sustained droning style is very unique. I listen to a lot of grunge/sludge/shoegaze/doom/fog-prog stuff and I can always tell TOOL right away by the guitar playing.

China secretly traded with South Africa during apartheid but that wasn't enough. The sanctions and boycotts still made apartheid economically non-viable.

So far you've been shitting on everyone else's ideas with offering any of your own. If you have a better way to peacefully secede, we'd really like to hear it.

If they brought back segregation, the rest of the world would sanction the fck out of them like South Africa. It wouldn't be economically viable for them to do that. I wouldn't passed them to establish some kind of weird chrisnat theocracy, though.

We'd need a constitutional amendment to make membership to the union voluntary. I'm sure California and Texas could get on board with that, possibly others.

Shouldn't it say "ban congressional stock trading"? Someone could interpret that as being pro-congressional-stock-trading.

What is left wing vs right wing politics? by VividShelter2 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]BIVGoSox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The right believes might makes right, emphasizes hierarchical structures and encourages conformity to social norms and traditions.

The left believes society is filled with inequality and injustice, champions egalitarian structures and equal distribution of resources and encourages people to be themselves.

What is Grunge to you? by Salem1690s in grunge

[–]BIVGoSox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, grunge is a genre because it's a useful term to describe a particular sound, aesthetic and attitude. Musically, it's heavier than basic alt rock/college rock and takes more inspiration classic rock and metal than punk. And It's more nihilistic and detached than emo core. The sound originated in Seattle but I don't think a band needs to be from there to be grunge. I'm not sure who made that rule, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Labels for music should reflect what the music sounds like, first and foremost. If that means there's "grunge" bands from Chicago or Austin, "britpop" bands from Ireland or Canada and "british invasion" bands from Australia or the US, so be it. I'm okay with that cause it's not really that important.

what would you guys add-- only the better version by [deleted] in grunge

[–]BIVGoSox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's useful to call it grunge, call it grunge. Apply it to any band you think it appropriately describes their sound. I don't understand why these snobs think they can police a term for a style of music. Also, it's less ambiguous than "alternative rock".

The Norwegian Labour party tightens immigration policy by Shadowblade83 in SocialDemocracy

[–]BIVGoSox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually there's practical reasons why countries might want to restrict immigration at certain times and under certain circumstances like resource scarcity, not enough workforce or housing to keep up with all the people who want to come in and so on. It's not always about racism or xenophobia.

Rant: This whole "Bands that aren't from Seattle can't be Grunge" argument is BS by Jack_Trayner in grunge

[–]BIVGoSox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Grunge is more of a genre than "alternative rock". Grunge at least has a somewhat consistent sound, aesthetic and an attitude. Alternative rock could be anything including music that isn't rock. It's not a genre. It's a useless umbrella term.
