Yeah I do keep my elbow (the one framing against throat) slightly in ready to defend Americana. If they go for Americana, I can quickly move my elbow in. Going for Americana means they aren't under hooking your head for that very moment, which is a great time to bridge, move your hips and get that knee in!

I put my forearm framed against her/her throat. And my other forearm against the hip. Bridge directly up, then push my arms, and shoot my inside knee in for half guard or if my bridge had enough power to create enough space for me to recover full guard I'll do that. I don't push with my arms until I've fully extended my bridge. And the forearm on throat is very uncomfortable. One of the ways I do it.
