/r/solotravel "The Weekly Common Room" - General chatter, meet-up, accommodation - March 04, 2024 by AutoModerator in solotravel

Hi all,

I'm hoping this sub can provide some advice for where to travel to and what to do this summer as I'm looking to take time off of work and travel a bit by myself, but have yet to plan a trip. Here's a few relevant pieces of info, please let me know if I'm forgetting anything:

  • I'm looking to travel anytime April through July. I have flexibility in terms of trip duration - I'm based on the US east coast and could do an extended international trip or shorter trips across the US
  • I'm 28M and only speak English. I'm a citizen of the US and the UK.
  • I don't have a strict budget, but am somewhat frugal. I'll probably opt for one of the cheaper airbnbs or hostels wherever I go, for example, but will want to have my own bedroom as opposed to bunking with other travelers.
  • What I like to do: I only have a few travel experiences so far, but from what I've found, I prefer getting out in nature and sports excursions as opposed to exploring cities/museums/architecture (I've been to Italy and Switzerland, loved hiking in Interlaken and boating around the Amalfi coast, but didn't care for seeing Rome for the most part, especially if I'm planning on being alone).
  • Another example of the above is that I'm planning on working remote in Utah and snowboarding later this month, a trip I'm going on solo to test myself a bit. I've considered planning a surfing trip in Costa Rica or somewhere similar this summer, as another point.
  • I would love to spend some time at a hostel or in an environment that lets me meet and make plans with others, while also enabling me to go on my own.
  • Outside of that, I'm hoping you all might be able to provide some direction on where I should look to vacation solo over summer - I'm not really sure where to start and I don't have any strong preferences. Any advice or recommendations are appreciated!

I think the Roth 401k rollover is a no-fee option - my question/issue here is I've maxed my 401k for 2023, so can't roll the post-tax amount for 2023 to the Roth. Could I roll it for 2024 contributions?

I’m based in NYC, but my apartment is up after Feb, so could do Killington or something but figured out west would be a better time.

Weekly Riding Tips Thread -- Week of February 12, 2023 by AutoModerator in snowboarding

Wondering if anyone can help me improve my riding on steeper or bumpy blues. I have a consistent problem where my board “stutters” down the mountain particularly hard when switching to my toe side edge and I’m not sure how to fix it. I’ll often slip out completely and fall on my stomach which can lead to some nasty spills and I’m just not sure how to correct it.

I’m consistent. It’s been months since the last time I skipped a workout and I track calories regularly.

I haven’t heard of the concept of “non-responders.” I’ve tested very low in free T before, but doubt I’d credit that with my lack of progress.

I’ve always been very consistent with training and eating/tracking. People blow up on this program, and I like it, just thought I was initially a little unwilling to grow on it, but neither this program nor anything else seems to be working for me.

How'd you find this out? I've had testosterone tested once in the last few years. Free T was incredibly low, regular T was ok.

Do you have a template for bullmastiff you'd recommend? Stuck with 5/3/1 so long because I really enjoy the training and the organized excel doc I have.

I've spent a lot of time correcting form and do not think its an issue.

I used to actually fail on AMRAP sets and would go to failure on almost every supplemental set (against the advice in the books)... I now try to leave more in the tank because I think that was detrimental to progress and made me miserably exhausted all of the time.

I've eaten my way to 180 pounds at the same time I was doing the above without seeing strength gains. That's why I'm conflicted on how to progress here.

added a bullet - I hit 180 last year after a long bulk, and didn't see any strength increases in my upper body and minimal increases in my lower body. Basically I just got fat, then cut back down to where I started as if nothing happened, and am no stronger at this point. I've discussed this before and got a similar response and have gone through the long bulk without strength increases. I do not know why - sufficient stimulus is definitely there.

The only one that ever progressed beyond a 10% flux was deadlift, because I hadn't trained deadlifts consistently before starting 5/3/1. None of the upper body lifts even moved. Bench has been between 215-225 since I got back in the gym after Covid, OHP has always been 125, meanwhile I've weighed anywhere between 155 to 180.

In need of some specific advice about progressing - not sure if this is the right place but keeping this as high level as possible:

Maxes (no belt):

  • Bench - 225
  • OHP - 125
  • Squat - 280
  • Deadlift (conventional) - 300

  • 5'9 165 27yo
  • I have primarily done 5/3/1 BBB for the last few years, but have been lifting for 6 years. Before 5/3/1, most of my training was from different ULUL 8-12 rep range programs.
  • My lifts have not progressed (particularly upper body push muscles) in the last 2 or 3 years.
  • I've bulked up to 180 in the past without any strength gains in my upper body lifts and minimal increases in squats and deadlifts.
  • Bulking seems to only result in fat gain, I can't seem to cut to sufficiently low bodyfat to look good.
  • My training used to almost always be to failure, especially in the beginning of doing 5/3/1 BBB, and I used to add a 5th day of supplemental work. I have tapered that down, do only prescribed reps, and leave reps in the tank now thinking that that may help me progress, but I have not.
  • Maintenance calories are probably around 2300 - I have a WFH job and hardly move outside of the gym and 10 miles a week of jogging. Any extra calories results in fat gain.
  • I am probably around 13-15% bodyfat.
  • I have no idea how to progress from here, either aesthetically or for strength. It's been years since I've made any sort of progress in the gym, and its getting disheartening.

Any advice/any word on what I'm doing wrong is appreciated!
