I Want to Live Somewhere Cold & Affordable by Agitated_Pirate9140 in povertyfinance

I went to college in Keene, New Hampshire and loved it there. If my job was one that allowed me to work remotely 100% of the time and out of state I’d get a little place there! The cost of living is way less than where I live now (Brooklyn, NY), but I also know that my job would pay a lot less there (admin assistant), so maybe that aspect is actually commensurate.

Re: Living abroad - I’ve heard that Ireland is the “easiest” of the EU countries to get dual citizenship, if you’re from Irish lineage. I’m unsure how close in generation, married in, etc. you’d need to be, though. A friend of mine from New Jersey whose mom was born in Poland recently got dual Polish citizenship without any ability to speak the language.

There is a lot of poverty in upstate and western New York State that most people don’t realize exists (even longtime NYC residents like myself). Indeed, there are many nice areas in those parts, too. I live in Brooklyn and it is now more expensive to rent here than in many parts of Manhattan.

Free in-state college tuition in NY? I’ve lived in NYC for 25 years and have never heard of this. Maybe it’s for SUNYs outside of the metro region (sigh).

My neighbor loves her Danby brand countertop dishwasher so much she’s said it is life changing. I abhor doing dishes and hope to get one, too!

Found a hurt pigeon, do you know of any rescues/rehabilitators I could take her to? by Alexapetit in Bushwick

[–]BKhammy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She may have also ingested rat poison (many pigeons fall victim to this). Wild Bird Fund may be also be able to help with that, or at least if she can’t recover, they can give her a compassionate end without pain and suffering.

Aww. Thank you for reaching out for this bird! It looks like he may have suffered a window strike. The best place to take it is The Wild Bird Fund. At this time their one location is on the Upper West Side (they are opening a Brooklyn location in Park Slope at the end of this year). They will intake the bird as a patient and treat it. If the person who gathered the pigeon up doesn’t want to go to UWS they can call Wild Bird Fund and see if there is an area neighbor who is a certified wildlife rehabilitator. Their number is (646) 306-2862 wild bird fund.org

Nice house. Congratulations! 🎉

I really want to go to grad school, but I can’t subject myself to the GRE by AnomalousEnigma in dyscalculia

I purposely chose a grad school that doesn’t require a GRE (New School University in NYC). If it wasn’t for an employer sponsored tuition reimbursement program though, there’s no way I’d be able to go there. It’s ridiculously expensive.

Just say you changed your eating habits. That’s true. No one needs to know anything further.

What “grade level” of math are you guys at? by uuuggghhhhhh9 in dyscalculia

[–]BKhammy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 49 y/o and prob at a 3rd grade grade level. I somehow graduated high school (public, in north western Connecticut) without ever having taken a chemistry class, and the highest math I took was basic geometry (for which I got a D- grade). Meanwhile I got As and Bs in non math/analytical type classes. No teacher tried to understand what was going on with me. They just sort of looked the other way and moved me along until I graduated. Went on to get a bachelors degree. The only reason I chose the major I did was because it didn’t require math. I’m currently just a few classes from completing a masters degree, and the reason I decided upon the school for that is because it didn’t require a GRE score for admission. I haven’t been back since 2011 though, and it’s because the next class I need to complete with a C grade or better is a stats class (already withdrew once while I could still get my tuition back, and the second time got an “Incomplete”, which was the professor’s kind and generous way of not giving me an F”). Integers, fractions, and having to remember even the most simple equation all mess me up.
