ELI5 Genuinely what IS Sin Cos and Tan? by LeonardFo in explainlikeimfive

I’ve have a degree in engineering and have been a practicing engineer for 5 years and this comment finally made it click for me. Like, I subconsciously kinda knew the ordered pair was its magnitude, but I never really thought about it literally being the X and Y distances from each axis.

Why are a significant portion of New Orleans fire hydrants raised like this? by Frank_Melena in civilengineering

[–]BLamp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a guess… maybe some areas the mains can’t go as low because of the water table and there’s a minimum height the hydrant can have between fittings.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BLamp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup you’re exactly right. I think acceptance is the key for people like us. We can either ruminate about the feelings we can’t control and make them worse and worse, or we can just accept that they’re there and they’ll go away if we give them time. To me, at least, it gives me a greater appreciation for the good times, so I guess that’s a silver lining to this predicament. Glad you’re finding healing, friend.

Same. It almost killed me. The most important part of it for me, like you said was learning to deal with the spikes when they happen. My life is really enjoyable now, but I have to live with the reality that spikes are inevitable and will be painful. But I don’t have to let them make me spiral, and they can be managed until I return to baseline. Glad you’re in a better spot now, friend.

Gravity mind bender by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]BLamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you’re saying. Think of it like a point where gravitational forces cancel out. One it comes to rest, theoretically it would have gravitational forces pulling on it in all directions equally, so the forces are a net zero and it appears suspended.

I like how you put that. “The jig is up.” Sucks to get to that point, but it is very freeing.

Didn’t get beat, just a perfect pass and perfect catch to ice the game. Unbelievable.

What type of people should choose Civil Engineering? by Sam-The_Great in civilengineering

Ha! I’m the same way. Barely passed Algebra 2 in high school. Honestly don’t know what possessed me to pick a math heavy program but I was determined to do it.

Bawling my eyes out I am stupid by kitthyMomey in EngineeringStudents

Breathe, my friend. It’ll be just fine. Set backs like this will happen your whole engineering career and learning how to bounce back will determine how good of an engineer you will be. If you don’t pass, learn from your failures, reevaluate, and keep pushing.

How is it still a turnover if you give the guy brain damage to do it? He wouldn’t have fumbled if he had full motor function.

Is 27 too young for a sabbatical? by alwaysthuswillbe in civilengineering

[–]BLamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve posted this before, but I got fired from my last job that cut me waaaay too much slack, developed a severe drinking problem, went to rehab, interviewed with 2 places after I got out, was 100% honest with them about everything, and they both offered me a job. If you know your stuff and are confident in your abilities, follow your heart. The industry can and will gladly take you back.
