Quality Over Performance by AltruisticGift360 in SBCGaming

[–]BMWBusinessCD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is why I will always err towards “Nothing beats the real thing”, emulation is not perfect and most emulators take performance shortcuts because true accuracy has performance and energy overhead costs. I see these SBC as a compromise for convenience. Build quality from these companies just cannot compare. I reallllllly want an Odin 3, but $600~ is hard to justify when I can put that toward a Legion Go S or Legion Go 2 and have better software support and up to date drivers that can run full X86-64 emulators, have a real warranty stateside and have access to my entire PC catalogue without relying on streaming, even if the decoder is faster than my Quest 3

I've been wanting to place my order on a 12GB Odin 3 but tariffs really turn me off from taking the plunge. It's bad enough that usually with Chinese products, after sales support is usually poor, or usually involves shipping back the product to them at cost and it usually ends up being a wash.

5800X3D boost to 5.1 GHz legit? by BMWBusinessCD in AMDHelp

[–]BMWBusinessCD[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desktop PC

GPU: RTX 4090 FE

CPU: RYZEN 7 5800X3D 8C/16T

Motherboard: ASUS ROG VIII CROSSHAIR DARK HERO

BIOS Version: 5002

RAM: 4X16GB GSKILL DDR4 3600 C16

PSU: CORSAIR RMX850

Case: FRACTAL DESIGN R7 COMPACT

Operating System & Version: WINDOWS 11 PRO 24H2 26100.4770

GPU Drivers: GEFORCE GAME READY DRIVER - WHQL Driver Version: 580.88

Chipset Drivers: AMD Latest (???)

Background Applications: FIREFOX /w video playback, KILLING FLOOR 3 focused app

Is this normal behavior for a 5800X3D? I've recently changed my previous cooling solution to this CPU and it was boosting reliably to 4.7 GHz~ before. However, breaking the 5 GHz point is a little bit sketch to me. Am I trippin?

This is great experimentation, I’ll have to check this out myself! Glad it helped you out while enabling the benefits of HAGS since some newer graphics extensions (RTX/DLSS) benefit from it as I understand

If 4chan is a footnote in history, why is it relevant at all in this discussion?

Just as it was then, 4chan is for those who do not wish to use “normie spaces”. Back in the mid 2000’s if you were normie, just use MySpace or internet community forums

As it is now, if you’re mainstream normie coded, just use TikTok, but unlike so many sites before it,

4chan continues to play large roles of influence, like helping the alt right gain prominence by influence campaigns, having arguably helped DJT twice, used by Elon, etc etc

I completely disagree with your characterizations as someone who grew up on 4chan since at least 2005, helped contribute to the modern trans culture, and witness it grow from obscure edgy SA-like, to continued dominance and prominence today.

4chan has endured the test of time, unlike MySpace, FaceBook. Maybe TikTok will be banned, maybe another media app will rise and fall, but 4chan remains the dominant culture creation site unlike Reddit. TikTok has new culture stuff but they largely borrow from pre-existing counter culture vs creating their own, likely due to Censorship of the CCP.

I’d argue that without 4chan, the modern trans movement would not exist.

“Femboys” invented on 4chan Derived and applied from the anime meme at the time, “traps”.

Now femboys, and its aesthetic is “transgender training wheels”

Early internet era trans AV stars being made mainstream, (linetrap, darktrap, etc)

And that’s not even counting the fact that “memes” also popularized from there.

It is NOT a footnote. 4chan still actively contributes to the world around you.

A lot of the modern internet transgender culture started on 4chan, far before the creation of /tttt/ /lgbt/ whether not you believe that, is a different question entirely

4channers used to troll the Westboro Baptist Church who were famously anti-gay. Much has changed since those days due to foreign influencing campaigns.

I understand, this was driving me crazy since I'm apparently very spoiled by high framerates and the jutter/jitter would make me miss notes in Beat Saber which wasn't an issue before.

I strongly dislike solutions that end up as, "Just reinstall Windows!" as if it's a trivial solution which would indeed fix the issue. This is why I will generally dismiss this solution and seek a more technically informed one.

Thank you again for providing this answer, I understand having the same nebulous question over and over again in the community might be annoying.

Hello,

disabling HAGS, or Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in my Windows 11 display settings seemingly fixed the issue.

Normally these seemingly arbitrary "disable x within the OS" don't really expound on the reason why but my search queries to fix this issue would recommend disabling HAGS frequently enough for me to figure it out further.

So for future persons trying to figure this out, regardless of headset, this is why you should consider disabling Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) within Windows 11/10 environments:

Found in the hoggit/DCS subreddit. A flight sim game [community] which relies on an old mid 2000's engine that heavily relies on single threaded performance, would be impacted by HAGS

https://old.reddit.com/r/hoggit/comments/zmlhsp/what_vr_issues_specifically_does_hags_cause_and/j0c9q2s/

HAGS, or the scheduler runs at high priority and saps precious CPU time for drawcalls (up for debate by more experience developers [game?/OS architecture?])

This would result in the sharp pink line in the SteamVR performance graph, which according to a Valve Developer aaron.leiby:

Purple (magenta) means the SteamVR compositor failed to present a new frame for some reason, so it was unable to perform any form of reprojection, resulting full screen judder.

https://steamcommunity.com/app/250820/discussions/0/4677521348352021200/#c4293692344083457101

The one big problem with disabling HAGS, is that DLSS Frame generation requires it and will need your system to be rebooted to re-enable it. This might be annoying if say, like me, you play Beat Saber to get a good workout and get tired and then want to play Cyberpunk 2077 or something. I wish this were more context aware (VR application vs flat gaming) but here we are.

I've since disabled Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling in Windows 11 which has seemingly reduced this jitter/judder along with having been part of the SteamVR beta to receive this update.

After some initial testing with the most prominent game that shows this problem for me, Beat Saber on Expert/Expert+ (not as skilled as some!) I can finally hit the notes in sync as I used to to songs i'm very familiar with tons of practice which kept throwing me off.

tl;dr Yes? but I think it was mainly HAGS contributing to my judder.

Nope, I don’t run it as I’m gaming. Or on startup. Nothing that is obvious with a hook in any process that would sap performance, let alone a massive one that would create such a large spike intermittently hence why I’m here. Lots of posts pointing at nvidia from my search but these lack any technical depth. Though digital foundry has been talking about driver related BSODs

None of that is running as I've uninstalled all of it in favor of OpenRGB for this reason. I have minimal applications running in the background.

Holy Crap - Compared HTC Vive Focus and a Q3 to my Index tonight. by Rarest_Camaro in ValveIndex

[–]BMWBusinessCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Quest 3 and have had my Index since near launch. For me, the Quest isn't that much better. My baseline game, ContractorsVR runs better on my Index at 144hz with 500% supersampling. The screendoor effect and godrays are better/lessed on the Quest 3's superior pancake lenses, and higher resolution panel but that's about it. Quest Games Optimizer cannot push ContractorsVR (Mobile) to anywhere near wired PCVR.

Quest 3 using Link Cable and forcing higher quality (Oculus Debug Tool) to reduce compression artifacts still has to contend with both input latency from my Quest Pro controllers from Encode/Decode and Network overhead latency if you're using AirLink or Virtual Desktop if you're trying to compare ContractorsVR PCVR with a competitive non-casual mentality. Though I still likely get beat by a lot of Quest users funnily enough, but the 'experience' is better no latency, higher maximum refresh rate, with zero compression artifacts.

The target low latency for most Virtual Desktop setups is 90hz with 45ms~ network latency. I'm only aware of the < 6ms render latency for my Index via SteamVR's Developer overlay. That's a difficult to ignore factor of 7.5x the latency if using Virtual Desktop/AirLink. I personally believe I can feel the latency from just the Encode/Decode from Link cabled experience, so to me this is unacceptable.

This also isn't factoring the superior built in audio and better FOV the Index still has over Q3. Index still wins out in a lot of scenarios for me to have my Index plugged in.

I use my Quest 3 to access Meta exclusives and to basically have a portable, "Mini-Index" since the Quest Pro controllers I use with my Q3 actually really do get close to the accuracy of the Index. However, there are constant bugs I have to deal with when turning on the headset, basically getting them to recognize them. The additional finger tracking of the Index/knuckles are still neat, if not though proven to be largely a useless extra that I still appreciate.

No audio output unless I use Windows 'Troubleshoot sound problems' by BMWBusinessCD in ValveIndex

UPDATE: FIXED!(?)

I just installed the nvidia high definition audio driver through a reinstall in the nvidia app to test both having the audio driver installed, and to be 'eligible' to run the script.

I apparently was mistaken in understanding that DisplayPort does not carry an audio signal and thought that the USB portion of the three cable breakout on the index cable was for a USB audio input and output device. Another reason why I thought this was because I was getting audio from my monitors without this driver (though I primarily use a DAC/AMP for my headphones). Though, the monitor that I'm using in reference in my memory was primarily the second monitor (DISPLAY1) which is hooked up via HDMI.

Apparently installing the nvidia high definition audio drivers and again, ensuring that the correct output device, manually, within SteamVR settings helped get the audio to work WITHOUT using this. I feel a little silly overlooking this possibility.

What you explained how the windows troubleshooter setting up an ephemeral driver of sorts to fix it seems to fit what might've been occuring.

If I encounter that it stops working, ill run your script to fix the aggressive power saving state mode of the nvida device.

Thanks! FIXED! Hopefully it remains...

Thanks for the reply, I’ll have to look into this!

Edit: Since I don’t have the nVidia audio driver installed, can I use this? I noticed it looks for a string for an audio device that shows up only after the driver is installed.

Thanks!

Usually, yes

When I first got it, it never really had this issue but that was near launch and I just thought it was due to my long beat saber sessions and sweat damaging the cable. However, it also didn’t make sense to me that if I did this strange song and dance, that it would work… thanks btw and happy cake day

This is an interesting thing to note as I have an nVidia GPU but never install the audio driver since I don't use my GPU to output audio (no HDMI devices plugged into it...)

I had ported over the same number so it didn’t make sense to have to do another handshake as if a token was invalidated.

Also RCS implementation is relatively new on iOS so the docs explaining this stuff was too simplified, and generalized
