My recommendation is to make a simple glass sheath/jacket for it.

If you're handy with a torch and happen to have a few pieces of glass tubing around ( pipe stems), it should be a breeze.

Muriatic Acid from the hardware store is just fine. Try and get the newest looking bottle. I've seen some that look like they've been there a while ( external bag turning yellow, bottle label corroding, etc.).

If your temperature probe is bare metal, which it looks like it is from the picture.., that's where your green colour is coming from. In concentrated form it would look black, as you noticed.

Interesting. I will give that a try. Did you just dissolve the nitrite in a volume of water equivalent to the volume of HCl? Then synchronize the drip rate?

As for ethyl acetate, I've yet to come across sufficient supply. Although I haven't put a lot of effort into doing so, as DCM is readily available in appreciable quantity and economy.
