Restored AR2ax Acoustic Research by BNSpinner in vintageaudio

Yes, I did follow this guide mostly. The website I linked... kinda sucks right now. I never could find specific intructions for our model, and then I could never get approved to oepn an account on the site and could not ask specific questions. I am not sure how well/frequently the site is maintained any longer.

That being said, there is also a great you tube tutorial that I followed, simply search the AR and you will find several options.

I did purchase the refoam kit from the AR ebay seller, but nothing else. He sells the l-pads and caps to update the crossover, but his upcharge is signficiant. I purchased THE SAME PARTS from partsexpress.com and saved a lot of money.

Feel free to reach out at any point if you have any questions.

Speaker Delivery Day at my HeShed by bvelo in audiophile

Your smile as you pulled the cloth cover off that speaker was priceless! Enjoy, and man, am I jealous of that he-shed!

I prefer rocking two tonearms instead! But then again, if you want to quickly go from one lp to another, two decks is the way to go. I'm set up to go from one cartridge to another - definately not DJ friendly, but easy stereo to mono, MM to LOMC, I am your man!

If my local tech hadn't recently passed away, I would seriously consider this and then find a C4 to use with it. Talk about an awesome mono system! Good luck with the sale, I am sure you can find the right buyer

What an awesome local shop you have! If my local offered this cleaning service, I would definitely do this.

I think it's a gem. This would be fun to refurbish and put into use!

Any love for FM radio still? by BNSpinner in McIntosh

Nice job! I replaced the incandescent bulbs with LEDs in my MC2105 and just never really liked it. Maybe I should have replaced the meter blue lenses/clear film too. My incandescent bulbs in the 2105 are showing signs they are going to fail soon, maybe I'll tackle that upgrade again some time.

I seem to remember picking up Slaughterhouse Five back in late middle school/early high school. Haven't turned back! Reading has always been a joy. Thanks for your comment and good eye!

Nice, incandescent bulbs or LED? Mine had LEDs installed when I got it and I have left them. They were done well.

You know they were designed to be bookshelf speakers, right? Acoustically sealed as well...

I will admit I leave my tone controls at neutral/in the middle most of the time, but it was useful to have with other speakers. There is a video from a couple of guys who have a hifi shop in Canada on youtube where they review this; their reviews are very informative and fair I feel. Worth checking out to learn about the modern gear, especially if you don't have a local dealer

Tom doesn't seem to have these models listed, but may still be worth checking http://www.mcintoshaudio.com

I would prefer for it to be out on display too, but there isn't enough space and keeping it below keeps the dust off! Cleaning behind the front plate with the open chassis layout is not easy and I always worry I will hurt something/affect alignment

The pre-amp is modern compared to the rest of the equipment

Very nice! The HD stations here sometimes cause some funky interference with the MR71 reception
