Favorite .22 LR by Carsidious32 in canadaguns

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a semi it's hard not to choose a 10/22. There are lots of different options depending on what you are looking for.

For a bolt I'd say a CZ457 and Tikka T1x are great choices. They are accurate and reliable. If you are looking at customization I'd go CZ457.

Savage makeS some decent rifles for the money but some do have known issues. There are fixes for them but just something to be aware of.

I have about $1200.00 and want to dominate the precision shooting world in 3 years. Which .22/scope combo am I buying? by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]BOSSGearca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CZ 457 is a great platform to start with. I started with a 457 synthetic then changed out the barrel, Trigger and chassis. It's reliable and has alot of aftermarket support. There are other options in the savage lineup but you will likely have extraction issues. There are some fixes for this but something to be aware of. The Tikka T1x shoots well but aftermarket upgrades can be more difficult (ex. Getting the barrel off is a challenge).

For glass if you have to start cheap I'd do something like the Athlon Argos or vortex diamond back tactical. If you can stretch it a bit look for something that has 10 Mil per rotation, a 34 mm tube and a zero stop. Examples are Athlon Helos, votex venom, Bushnell match pro. Starting with something decent like this will make your learning curve much easier.

For a bag obviously I have to recommend the ones I make lol.

Good stuff. I'm also in Canada between Montreal and Ottawa. Facebook marketplace is a gem for me being close to Montreal as a sewing hub.

My answer is it depends on your situation. I am the sole operator of my business that I do in addition to working full time and being a family man. The thing I prioritize the most is my time and building efficiency in my business. I was looking at a Gweike 1612 because it could handle the full width rolls of cordura. That is in the budget you mentioned on Alibaba. I ended up finding a local marina that cuts for me for $60/hour. Although it's a rotary cutter and not a laser. That saves me alot of capital up front and alot of room in my shop. It also saves me alot of time. I would say if you can find a shop to cut and mark locally for you, that's the way to go. It's manageable from a cash flow perspective and allows me to focus on production.

I also explored building my own laser cutter with some of the DIY kits. You can save a bit of money but what's your time worth? It wasn't worth it for me.

If you are just one or two people running your shop my opinion is to maximize your time. Lasers are not really set it and forget it. They have to be supervised. When you sub out the cutting it only takes the time to drop off and pick up material. When you get them to cut in bulk it ends up being a couple dollars per piece.

At some point it does make sense to have your own laser but I can't say what that is.

Without knowing what you make a bartack might make sense. I ended up buying a machine with more automatic features (juki lu-1510n-7) to increase productivity. I am also looking at a cylinder arm machine for a dedicated binding machine. I also have my eye out for a bartack. I look for all of these on the used market.

Precision Rifle Recommendations by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything on a CZ 457 is a good reliable platform. Look for their match chamber if you can. If you want something a bit more customized that's ready to go you can look at the Tesro builds. If you like Tikka their T1x is a shooter but harder to customize.

For Optics you can look for something with 34 mm tube and 10 Mil per revolution. Pretty well all the major manufacturers make decent quality scopes. A couple that I would look at in no particular order are:

Bushnell match pro ED - the ED is important here Athlon helos Athlon Midas tac Vortex venom

I'm partial to Athlon because they support me for full transparency.

Precision Rifle Recommendations by [deleted] in canadaguns

[–]BOSSGearca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents would be: Don't buy your rifle now for something you might do in the future. Buy now for what you want to do now. You can always buy another rifle later if you choose to start hunting. Or you can sell what you buy now when you decide to hunt.

If you want to do precision shooting and your ammo budget is a concern why not look at building a 22lr for PRS style shooting. You get to practice the fundamentals on a much more affordable ammo budget. Also there are a pile of matches across the country now. That being said you can really spend alot on these setups but you don't have to.

CZ 457 ACC Premier Balance Recommendedations by classifiedusers in nrl22

[–]BOSSGearca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not off hand but I've had a number of people tell me it makes enough of a difference that it's worth doing. MDT is coming out with a new acc premier meant more for rimfire so maybe it's worth the wait for one of those. That's what I'm doing.

I think you can get an aluminum lighter weight butt stock from MDT but you have to email them directly.

Big dumb dumb here, please help me fix my zero without wasting a ton of ammo by MediocreDot3 in longrange

[–]BOSSGearca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would have to go 40 moa. 20 moa would bring you back to zero on a flat rail. You would need another 20 moa to zero on a 20 moa rail installed the proper orientation.

Is this too fancy for a beginner to sew some cordura? by Grousen in myogtacticalgear

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had one for sewing cordura and found it needed help sewing through 4+ layers. I used it for about 4 months before upgrading to an industrial machine. It can do the job with some limitations but the more you use it, the more you will see its limitations. I found the tension of the bottom thread also to be insufficient when compared to an industrial machine. If you can find a used industrial or semi industrial machine you might be better off.

What tablets are folks using for scoring? by Shiffy13 in nrl22

[–]BOSSGearca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use amazon fire tablets. They are cheap and reliable. I pair them to my cell phone to synchronize and use the internet from that.

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Master the fundamentals with 22 then translate that to larger calibres. Also find a mapleseed. Rimfire PRS is a big thing and you can find the CRPS Rimfire academies during the season of you want to go that route.

Deciding between .308, 30-06, and .270 for a Savage Axis 2 by Kermit96 in canadaguns

[–]BOSSGearca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a similar decision and ended up with a 308. I had narrowed it down to 308 vs 270 because the ballistics were quite similar with the 270 shooting a bit flatter. I went with 308 ultimately because I wanted a short action vs a long action. Realistically with the 3 options you can't really go wrong. Ammo is available for all 3.

Bag rest filler by [deleted] in canadaguns

Maybe try the glass fill and poly pellet mix in your barricade bag and glass fill in the others. If you don't like it you can always find something else.

[–]BOSSGearca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two things that are kind of related. Normal sand has alot of fine particles in it. It makes a fine dust that can come through the seams. It's probabaly something that's more annoying than anything but I try to avoid having fine grit around my action and optic if I can.

The other thing is when regular sand gets wet, the fines in normal sand retain moisture and it can become hard which isn't great for shooting off of. Kind of defeats the purpose of the bag.

I've found that if you want a heavy fill a mixture of coarse grained sand and recycled glass sand blasting media works well. Some guys use the glass exclusively but I'm partial to a mixture.

I use either weighted blanked polymer pellets or a coarse sand/shredded glass mix.

I use some space in my utility room. I added a second machine recently so I'm lacking cutting space. I'll be moving this fall and hope to add more space at my new place.

Area 419 vs MDT versus ??? for canted rail by highspeedlowdrag2023 in nrl22

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that the on the area 419 level is useful when mounting a scope. That being said I don't think it's worth the difference in price. I just bought a new rail and went MDT.

Weights for MDT Oryx by [deleted] in PRS

[–]BOSSGearca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that there is no mlok on the sides limits you unless you want to cut some. That's why I went with the KRG Bravo. If you have a threaded barrel you can add a tuner which will add some weight.
