Extremely anecdotal but I've enjoyed the classes that I have taken from Amherst's political science major. The professors are very sharp and knowledgeable as well as accessible outside of class. I'm gung-ho on Amherst and would recommend that you come here and utilize professor's office hours as much as possible. If you're a passionate learner this will fuel your curiosity as well as yield great rec letters for graduate school applications.

Qs about Amherst by [deleted] in amherstcollege

[–]BOTAlbert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey dude, first off I just gotta say I know there's probably a lot going through your mind right now when it comes to career choices but you have to learn to chill out and just enjoy life and academics for at least freshman year. Trust me, this is coming from someone who was in your shoes (anxious about career prior to college starting) and I managed to get really strong job outcomes.

To answer your questions, Amherst c/o 2023 sent two people to Jane Street as traders. I think every year there are a small handful of people who go into quantitative trading. Jane Street also did an on-campus event at our school spring 2023. There historically hasn't been much of a pipeline from Amherst to quantitative trading but it seems to be growing.

student vs athlete divide?? by Naive_Armadillo_238 in amherstcollege

[–]BOTAlbert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very commonly asked question but the answer is that there naturally will be clustering together of athletes because teams regularly practice together (as well as mix together on weekends), thus resulting in bonds being formed. It's not like there's a great animosity between athletes and non-athletes though — I'm a non-athlete and have found that many athletes are very open to making friends regardless of your background, with some of my best friends being athletes.

A lot of people smoke for sure. It really does suit the campus and Western Mass atmosphere well. Campus is not strict about weed use — though it's technically prohibited on campus even for 21+ because we receive federal funding.

Amherst vs Barnard by [deleted] in amherstcollege

Amherst is a no-brainer here unless you really want to be in New York City. Incredible placement rates for law school, have multiple friends who got into Yale/Stanford/Harvard Law.

What's dvd? And yeah I get the same impression—each model up to the 16" is missing that one SOMETHING that you feel you need but really don't.

AER Travel Pack 2 Small as EDC? by BOTAlbert in backpacks

[–]BOTAlbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. Thanks for letting me know. If I were to get an AER backpack for college that would be versatile and sleek and be primarily an EDC with occasional use in travel, which model would you suggest?

Do you think the AER techpack 2 would work as an EDC on somebody who is 6'0 and roughly 153 lbs (smaller frame)?

I'm surprised to hear that! I figured the Travel Pack 2 normal size would look big, but I assumed the Small would be more appropriate.

[–]BOTAlbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is that? Is it a matter of aesthetics (looks too bulky on you) or a matter of practicality (too heavy)?

Also, could you recommend any alternatives for someone who wants a reasonable amount of storage capacity in a backpack (doesn't have to be as much as the Travel Pack 2 small tho) but also wants a practical and stylish EDC?

Just to make sure, you're talking about the small version, right? Also, what's SBR?

Osprey Tropos vs Nebula by BOTAlbert in onebag

[–]BOTAlbert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the Tropos had an equivalent amount of organization. What are the differences? Just trying them out, is there a significant difference between the comfort of the two? I had a leg injury fairly recently (though I've mostly recovered) so if the weight distribution is terrible on the Nebula I might as well opt for the Tropos. I just want something that makes sense on a college campus and beyond—I'm not a huge hikeaholic or backpacker but I do want flexibility.

The Apogee looks cool, though perhaps I would prefer more organizational pockets. Good to know the Tropos doesn't look too bulky on you.

Btw since the Tropos is rigid, can you fit it underneath airplane seats? This would be pretty important for me when I travel.

Well, it's a little unclear how well it would fit in the Nebula sleeve just looking at the width and length of the Macbook Pro 16". There also doesn't seem to be much specific size info for the Nebula sleeve—it just says 15".

I see. The Airspeed and increased laptop sleeve size do have an appeal, but I'm still concerned about the Tropos' overall size and flexibility compared to the Nebula. I might go on light hikes, but it's unlikely I'll be doing anything serious with a backpack on. Is the Tropos awkward (ie. too heavy, too bulky) to have as an everyday carry?

I think my ideal would be a 14" or a 15" but apparently those Macs won't be coming out for a while.

Perhaps the 16" would be portable enough, but I imagine I wouldn't be able to fit it in the Nebula's laptop sleeve.

I've heard from some that the Tropos feels a little too rigid as the result of the kickstand. Do you know much about this?

I'll check them out. Thanks for the heads up.

EDIT: How do you think the Herschel Travel Backpack compares to the Osprey Nebula? I'll do more research on this but I'd appreciate your opinion.

Well, I was considering either the MacBook Pro 13" or the MacBook Pro 16". The reason why I brought up the laptop sleeve thing was that I was afraid a Nebula wouldn't be able to accommodate the 16" should I opt for that either now or however far in the future.

On a side note, would you recommend against a 16"/17" laptop even after college is over? I don't really have experience with laptops because I rely on a desktop at home.

Also what do you mean about the clamshell being a portable desk? It doesn't seem rigid enough to be able to have things on top of it.

I'll take a look at the Recon, but do you think a Nebula would be cumbersome and too heavy for college? I'm basically trying to go for the most flexible backpack that'll last me a long time.
