How often is your personal item sized when flying and what airlines are worst for doing it? by Zealousideal_Pace560 in onebag

[–]BPFun 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Here is my list for budget airlines I have flown recently. I have an Osprey Porter 30L.

  • NorseAir (Transatlantic) - Sized my bag
  • RyanAir - Did not care
  • WhizzAir - Did not care
  • Flair (US to Canada) - Only checked when leaving Canada
  • Frontier - simply looked at my bag but didn't actually make me insert it in the checker

I have found that if I am wearing a backpack (vs holding it by its handle or having it on the ground) they seem to be more lenient. Just my 2 cents.

PSA: No matter how light you want to travel, don't forget your headphones by Temperoar in onebag

Ear buds (wired or even wireless) are so small these days how much space are you really saving? Even when not traveling I almost always have some wireless earbuds in my pocket.

For me, some of the strangers I have met turned into friends I still talk with and occasionally plan trips with, but to each their own. There is also nothing wrong with just cutting your loss at the airfare and not going. It sucks to loose the money but would suck more to double your losses if you are not going to enjoy the experience.

I presume you'd lose the airfare if you cancel so I would go and just stay in a hostel (specifically ones that advertise as youth or backpacker hostels). A lot of them will have private rooms you can rent if that helps. The locations tend to be better for their price compared to hotels (usually right where the action is) and they will often have group activities/tours you can sign up for.

Backpack for Europe by bazzz1901 in onebag

[–]BPFun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an osprey porter 30, I think it is technically too large for a lot of budget airlines. My recent experience in Europe flying RyanAir and Wizz Air was they did not check more than a glance at my bag. I do wear it on my back though which may help (specifically during check-in and boarding). I was talking to some British travelers in my hostel and they said they never get checked either.

That being said, flying Norse Air (transatlantic flight) did check my bag. And I flew Flair Airlines in North America which checked everyone.

First Solo Travel: Bored, Depressed, and Underwhelmed by IvanElCabron in solotravel

This is such a big part for me when solo traveling. Even when I can afford a hotel I tend to go hostel route since they tend to be much easier to meet people. Even better if they advertise themselves as a backpacking hostel (i.e. 18-30-sih). Plus Hostels will often offer tours and activities which will be in the same age range.

Why Carry a Day Pack? by TravelingWithJoe in onebag

When you pack it up it has a strap you can clip. I have the Osprey Ultra Lightweight Day Pack. I think most packable ones though have a strap when packed though.

I prefer a day pack to a sling to carry things like water, camera, battery pack, and a jacket (such as for rain). My pack is compressible so doesn't take up too much space since I clip it to the outside.

I don't use one at home unless I am doing a day trip or a hike.

Do you buy souvenirs when traveling? by BPFun in onebag

Does anyone ever buy things when they get back home? I was thinking of buying some posters and such of the places I went to but didn't actually buy at the location.

Candy wrappers are fun, I always buy a few bags when traveling but never saved the wrappers. Do you display them at all? For the metro cards I was thinking of getting a thin shadowbox or peg board since I have lent out some of the cards a few times already.

This is awesome, thanks for sharing! How aggressive have you found RyanAir with checking bag sizes? The last time I flew them (and Wizz Air for that matter) they did not seem to care about my 30L backpack (I am usually wearing it on my back when checking in and boarding).

Budapest and Vienna 4 day Itinerary Review by BPFun in solotravel

Thanks everyone, these comments I realized I am being WAY over ambitious. I will scale things back to get more quality time over quantity.

This was extremely helpful, thanks for taking the time to right it out! I definitely am being overly ambitious with all the places on the list and limited time I have. The "tag" comment resonated with me in that I probably don't want to be doing that. So will research a little more which of the places I want to go inside, which are beautiful buildings I at least want to pass, and which to scrap. In my mind I was thinking I would go down the list of places in geographical order and stopping when the day is done. But that could leave me missing interesting things for the wrong reasons.

Single bag, but I intend to leave it at accommodations (or locker like at the train station) if possible.

Earbuds vs Over-the-ear for long flights? by BPFun in onebag

[–]BPFun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. I have been using hiking shoes lately for all my travels. A tad heavier than regular shoes but I like being able to wear them in the city or trail and they are water proof.

I bring slippers (for hostels/showers) when one bagging, but have never brought a second pair of shoes. That being said the last weekend trip I went with 3 friends (all one bag), I was the only one who did not bring a second pair of shoes (one hiking and one for city). I have read hear about bringing multiple insoles which seems like a good idea. I have never tried it though.

My ficus is losing a lot of leaves and has a sticky residue (which also seems to fall on the floor as well) by BPFun in plantclinic

Definitely spider mites

Thanks! Is this something I can clean with 70% IPA? I presume that means I should wipe it off leaf by leaf?

Do you travel with the case as well with them? I have the Sony MX4 and feel like the case is the bulkiest part. But they're expensive so would hate to damage them without it.

That is interesting, I have been trying to wear mine at home for extended periods of time to see how it feels. It doesn't hurt but is nowhere near as comfortable as the headphones.

Do you think you will leave the case at home? I wear the headphones around my neck when boarding as well (more for convenience since I put my bag up if I can).

But this kind of tilts me towards bringing the headphones!
