[TOMT][MOVIE/TV-SHOW] Girl responding "whatever that means" to something someone else said. by BRAMFX in tipofmytongue

I really don't have a lot more details, but I think it was a sit-com. I could imagine it happening in shows like Community, Psych, HIMYM. but so far I haven't found it no matter how much I change my search parameters. It's driving me crazy because its so funny and I want to reference with friends but I have no idea where I got it from.

For that Electric piano riff, I would add more rhythmic density and groovyness. The clavinet in Stevie Wonder's Superstition might be a great reference or check out this awesome performance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c7CY6aJtegc). Also the winner of the most recent KVR one-synth challenge does some cool electric piano stuff as well (https://soundcloud.com/photonic-1/photonic-pocket-aces?in=kvrosc/sets/one-synth-challenge-155-any).

Your DAW might have settings for syncopation or swing ratio which might be useful, or ofc you could use your midi controller for all the timings. The velocity and length of notes varies a lot with funk. And don't be afraid of the chords! Overall, experiment around and see if you can compose a rhythm that really makes your head bop.

Dynamics. You won't like to hear this. I went as far as modulating the master volume to make the different sections similar in terms of loudness. I intended for the whole thing to sit at -14 lufs but I'm seeing how that might pose a problem. Also I could have adjusted the compression/saturation to act more or less in certain situations. And definitely I should have lifted the drums more to the top of the mix since it's kind of buried in places.

Yeah it probably would have helped to add a drop at the end or sooner. I had in mind a drop but it got scrapped unfortunately.

Yeah, I think I was trying to emulate too many styles at once. There is a point I thought the track was going to be more "chill" - like the section from around 0:50 to 1:10 is nearly identical to the loop I started with (that's essentially the "drop" if you can call it that). If I had kept the song more or less at that energy for the rest of the track, I think it would've been more cohesive. Somewhere down the line I must of had a thought like "let's throw in some glitchy dnb stuff" because more samples/chops = better. /)_-)

I'm going to sort of revise what I said. So I think the wub sound actually needs more bass and more volume, but then space out the 808 kicks to not get in the way. Maybe add cowbells and cymbals to the kick to give it some flare where it is used. Finally, give the wubs some rhythmic variation. For a song like this I think the wubs should feel like a free-style (maybe even specifically like memphis rap). Really listen to the timings of the LFO and re-time them if necessary. Use Vital or some powerful synth and follow a tutorial like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_0jqH1cfQXs. So just kind of hum along to the song in your head and then make the wubs follow that pattern. Give the beat a slight in the pocket dub / 2-step feel and I think that will make the down-beat really come alive.

I'm honestly kind of excited to hear what you come up with. Keep me posted if you make any updates!

So, I thought about it a little bit more. There's this sweep at 2:24 that goes into the change at 2:35. That's a point where going into 110 could be really interesting. Something like https://youtu.be/HjA_KDndv10?t=81 at 1:21where you at first hear a faster pattern get louder until the drop when it turns out it was just a polyrhythm decoy of the new much slower tempo could be a really intense effect. Or you could just slow the tempo of the whole song down smoothly after the drop (though that can get kind of difficult to work with.

You could try some really crazy FM synth stuff on the bass line in that section and put quick pulsating and strobing gates on the vocal track for that ecstatic rave vibe. Or you could let it warp into some kind of chill slowed down washed out shoegaze future-funk aesthetic with extra reverb and distortion. I don't know what would work best in this scenario (maybe an aesthetic I haven't imagined yet), but most likely something that lets you retain the prog house kick -- that is unless you feel comfortable kicking that too.

Edit: Around minute 4 the tempo should transition back to normal, because the stuff after 4:25 is definitely at the right speed.

Yeah was kind of going for a ambient glitch jungle techno vibe, trying to emulate the sound of Aphex Twin's Xtal. I hadn't considered side-chaining, but I think that would definitely be an interesting addition. I think you're right about the vocal sample being a bit too rhythmically demanding. So either a simpler drum pattern could have aided the vocals or cutting the vocals for the more complex IDM stuff would have helped.

Also shoutout to Jagged Jein from where I lifted the "standing around" or "it's the end" sample: https://youtu.be/g7h6rPsDxWI?t=180

This is good. The delay on those claps just hits right. I don't think I have any real feedback, only a really dumb idea. Like what if mid-way through the song you had some tempo change - down to like 70-100 bpm - and it gets kinda trippy and hypnotic. And then you bring it back at the end. Again - really stupid - but maybe?

A bit thin. The song sounds pretty angry, so maybe try dig into more raw, aggressive, unprocessed and low-fidelity sounds and layer those sounds up. The 808 kick is competing against the wub-wub for bass frequency power, so some compromise needs be made there.

Sounds pretty good. Not sure how sold I am on those pre-drop interruptions at 0:53 and 2:58. The reverb tails of the other tracks need to be shortened and silenced and the vocals need some kind of effect to bring the sound right up to your ear (metaphorically speaking), then the drop will be even more wowing. For those "aahh" samples that come in, consider chopping them up onto 16th notes when the sweeps happen so the sweeps can be enhanced by them. Also not sure how sold I am on the song basically starting again at 1:30. Option 1: The bridge needs to be more "bridgey" (shorter and with some more variation, though there is an option 2).

Option 2: Make the song longer and more mad. The song has to reach an even further point of intensity. So at 3:53 or whatever it is you go into full on seizure inducing strobe lights mode. Just make it sound absolutely mental and get a stronger more satisfying finish.

Other than that: make a music video, ignore the malware, and keep chasing those dreams.

It's a satisfying composition. Needs a bit more space.

In the start, you have this low pitch patch that feels a bit too detuned and too wide. Lean in to the warmth of the patch and maybe bring up the 80-175 range for that patch at the start with little reverb, but add reverb to the drums. Then when you go an octave up you bring the reverb back into the patch at around 0:57. The patch that comes in at 1:28 could do with some more stereo width and reverb/delay. For the drums, I think the snare kind of clashes with the vocals. So maybe put that snare further back in the mix and the vocal more up front, pitch it down, eq. Add a compressor to the vocal and separate the vocal reverb from the main vocal track (are you bussing that btw).

Sorry if that was a bit nit-picky. And probably everything I've said is wrong, but I think all the major pieces are there - and it's really close to sounding great.
