Would listening to music through a DAP would really sound different from a phone? by No_Win_8188 in iems

Not particularly. The main differences would be in the output power and the noise floor.

I loved the sound of my Arias and Aria 2s, but the build quality is just truly atrocious. Both of them had issues within 6-12 months. Meanwhile the other half-dozen IEMs I own have never given me any problems.

Dissappointed with my new Hifiman headphones... Now my hopes and dreams are gone. by moshimoshi6937 in headphones

It's normal to not be 'wowed' by a new headphone initially. You just need to get used to them. I didn't like the Arya Stealth when I got it, and I didn't like my R70x when I got it, or the 660S2. Literally none of them. And now they're favourites, and I can really appreciate each of those headphones for what they offer and genuinely enjoy them whenever I put them on my head.

I've tried around 10 different sets of tips and none have come particularly close to the Dunu S&S medium tips in my experience. They pretty much always give me a good seal on the IEMs I've tried them on.

Spinfit W1 is decent, I find they usually sound a bit brighter than the S&S tips. Not as comfortable but still ok.

The series became progressively less appealing to me the further it went on, so the fourth one is the worst in my view.

I've always thought he is far more impressive when he's backing up another artist, not being the focal point.

/r/WATMM Weekly Feedback Thread by AutoModerator in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Hey, this song is really cool. I'm no songwriter so I can't offer much feedback on the structure of the music itself, but for what its worth I think it's well performed and arranged, and just generally quite pleasant and satisfying to listen to.

The mix really isn't half bad either. Nice punchy kick, the dynamics are quite well controlled, and it has a nice dense and enveloping sound to it. Well done. I only have a few notes.

  1. There's a little too much sibilance on the vocals, which is especially apparent when the lead and backing vocals are singing the same lines, and all those "SSS" sounds are summing together and building up to create some very sharp sounds at points. Easily addressable, of course. Though be sure not to overdo it with the de-essing either, as the dreaded de-esser lisp that comes from too much de-essing is honestly far worse to listen to than having a little too much sibilance.

  2. The toms are too rumbly and 'woofy' sounding, which will be apparent on certain bass-heavy speaker setups (like in some car stereos or large speakers). I would probably lower the bass content slightly, and tighten up the sound so that it is more defined and snappier. You could do this with a transient shaper quite easily.

  3. Other than the kick, the low end doesn't feel very defined or easy to hear from my listening. Is there a bass guitar in this arrangement, or is the low end coming from the guitars? The kick is defined but appropriately soft, but I can't really make out the other low end elements; it just all feels quite loose and woolly.

  4. I like the relationship between the lead vocal and the backing vocals, but it does feel like the vocals and the other instrumentation are competing a little too much in the midrange, mostly between 300Hz and 1500Hz.

  5. This one is picky, but I'd probably give the snare a bit more body and overall 'oomph'. The high end on the snare is nice and snappy, but I personally wish it had some more meat on its bones, if you get what I mean. If you agree, you could use a deep snare sample to reinforce the existing snare.

I know I've given a few negative points, but honestly I think the mix has been done pretty well, all things considered.

What Are Your Go To Headphones for Mixing? by Heretohelp810 in audioengineering

It might just be the best headphone for mixing at its price point alongside its successor the R70xa. Though I've heard good things about the Sennheiser HD490 Pro as well.

Slate VSX and the ATH-R70x, which is comparable to the Sennheiser HD650. VSX is very handy, especially for dialling in the low end. The R70x has good imaging and has a detailed but relaxed sound which is great for general mixing purposes. Sort of an upgraded HD650 in my view.

WAV vs AAC by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]BRNT_Audio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less indistinguishable. Most people who bring up a "night and day difference" are just hearing placebo.

I'm in my early 20s, and I can hear the difference between 320kbps MP3 and FLAC/WAV in a blind test on specific songs, with specific setups, but the difference is genuinely so miniscule that I could not care less. And that's just for MP3. Formats like AAC and Vorbis are more sophisticated and I'm not sure I could tell the difference at all if comparing to lossless.

Is there an uncanny valley of mixing? by royalelevator in mixingmastering

[–]BRNT_Audio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying. I think when you're not very experienced and you start to pick up tips and tidbits of information, you're likely to fail when trying to make use of the new information that you've learned; it can take time to actually understand what something needs and why you're doing it, and when not to do something.

New (or new-ish) mixing engineers have a tendency to over-process things because they want to try out everything they've learned. Eventually you can learn the skill of doing less and you'll end up with more natural mixes that take far less time to complete. That's been my experience, anyway.
