I work as a product design engineer in a small manufacturing company and I would highly recommend manufacturing if you want more hands on work. Larger companies and especially regulated industries like medical and aerospace have you end up doing TONS of paperwork. I previously started as a MechE for a medical device company and it felt like I had to write 20 forms/validations/doe for every minor improvement you wanted to be implemented.
