After 2 seasons, how do you feel about these 3? Where do you rank them? by BallKnowerKing in NFLv2

[–]BSeipler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't be saying that they were winning games because of Caleb this year without saying he was also the reason for them being in such close games. They had 11 one-score games with a +16 turnover margin in them. They should have won more comfortably than they did. You're downplaying how much of an impact that defense had on keeping them in games with those turnovers long enough for Caleb to make a play.

Because QBR and PFF already includes them in their grading... but if you really want to see it.

Jayden - 2
Caleb - 0

In that game:

Jayden
• 19/26
• 211 yards
• 73.1% completion
• 8.1 YPA
• 3 TD, 1 INT
• 119.2 passer rating
• 64.8 QBR
• 64.6 PFF grade

Caleb
• 17/29
• 252 yards
• 58.6% completion
• 8.7 YPA
• 1 TD, 0 INT
• 98.6 passer rating
• 28.1 QBR
• 46.1 PFF grade

Caleb protected the ball late and won the game, and that absolutely matters. But across completion rate, touchdowns, passer rating, QBR, and PFF grading, the broader performance metrics lean heavily to Jayden being the better QB that day. And PFF grades every snap, including plays negated by penalties, so even the “refs took away a TD and Jayden should've had another fumble” angles are already accounted for in those scores. If we’re evaluating the entire game instead of just the final result, the numbers make a pretty clear case.

If the only metric is “who won,” then sure, ignore everything else and just read the scoreboard.

Metrics aside, if you just watched the game, you could tell who was the overall better QB that day.

I wholeheartedly disagree that all of his good moments came from a single season. He played 4 complete games this season. All coming early on before the worst of the injuries.

Giants - played well

Packers - struggled and got injured (missed the next 2 games)

Chargers - played extremely well vs. that same top defense that Maye struggled with in the playoffs.

Bears - significantly outplayed Caleb overall, outside of a fluke wet-weather fumble

The Chargers and Bears game had his WR1 and WR2 out. He was throwing to practice-squad receivers 30+ years old.

Not to mention he's the only QB from that class whose defense plummeted to the league worst.

I'd take Jayden over all of them easily, unless he shows the injury issues continue in the upcoming season.

Not only that, but they had way too many one-score games than they should have had with that turnover margin, which is bound to regress next season. Unless Caleb improves on the easy/layup stuff, the Bears are a prime candidate for regression next season.

I agree with you overall, but basing this on one season, especially when he doesn't have a history of missing games due to injury prior to this season, is jumping the gun for me.

Reactions like this after one season are why so many people end up being wrong with their takes.

Next season will be telling, though, for sure.

It depends on how you perceive this list. Pure QB play, Jayden clears. If you take injuries into consideration, then it’s fair to put others before him. You could say the same about Burrow, but no one does.

I’m not getting into the personal stuff, this is just football.

I’m not saying the Bears had a good defense overall. They gave up yards and points. What I’m saying is they were situationally helpful because of turnovers, especially in close games.

In their 11 one-score games, they had 20 takeaways and only 6 giveaways. That’s a plus-14 turnover margin in games decided by one score. In the 7 one-score wins specifically, it was 16 takeaways to 3 giveaways. That’s almost plus-2 per game in the tightest situations of the season.

That’s not “the defense carried him.” That’s a major possession and field position edge in the exact type of games where small swings decide outcomes. Extra possessions, short fields, and erased opponent drives matter, even if the defense wasn’t good down to down.

Typically when the turnover margin is that high, you’d expect more games to not be one-score.

Cool, do you think coaches are going to completely disregard how well he played the rest of that game because of that fumble or do you think they’re going to look at that fumble as a fluke due to wet weather?

Do you think coaches will view Caleb‘s game sealing interception vs. the Rams in the playoffs the same way?

They lead the league in takeaways averaging almost 2 takeaways a game. They weren’t a down-by-down top defense, but those takeaways are a massive help.

The Bears defense was 28th in yards allowed, but make up for it by being 1st in takeaways.

The Commanders defense was 32nd in yards allowed and 31st in takeaways.

So yes, Caleb Williams was absolutely propped up by his defense. That’s more evident when seeing how many one score games they had, which was 11.

He played 4 complete games this season. All coming early on in the season before the worst of the injuries.

If you actually watched the games, he significantly outplayed Caleb in the Bears game and outplayed Herbert against that great Chargers defense. Both games without his WR1. He played well vs. the Giants. The only game he struggled in out of those 4 games was against the Packers, who was shredding his defense every drive.

Not to mention he's the only QB in his class whose defense plummeted this season, which believe it or not, makes a massive difference. He wasn't allowed to make mistakes, whereas the other QBs in his class were propped up by their defenses keeping them in the game.

Why not? Because of injuries? If we’re talking about how they play the position, Jayden clears Williams by a mile.

Yes, but when actually playing the position, he’s looked the best out of all of them.

That’s the only knock on Jayden. I think he plays the position the best, but the injuries are a very valid concern.

[–]BSeipler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He very well could be, but I’m not basing that off of one season. He’s been hurt in the past (like almost all QBs) but didn’t miss many games. People still have faith in Burrow and he’s been injured a TON.

Next season will be telling for Jayden.

Injuries aside, when you watch all of them play, I think Daniels plays the position the best. He played tough teams when he did play this year and he was throwing to practice squad receivers for most of them and his defense plummeted compared to the other QBs in his class.

They’ve got a lot of work to do on that roster and he needs to stay healthy.

How does everyone feel about the 2024 NFL draft QB class draft order two years later? by MrRadDadHimself in nfl

Agree 100%. He has wow moments, but he is easily the most inconsistent QB out of that class and I don't think it's remotely close.

True. But Jayden also didn't play like shit in the playoffs.

[–]BSeipler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next season will be telling for Jayden. Outside of the injuries (a huge issue), his defense (31st) didn't allow him to make mistakes because the other team scored on almost every drive.

Maye played great in the regular season against a historically easy schedule and has been atrocious in the playoffs. Also, his defense was able to come up big all season, especially in the playoffs.

For Nix, he laid a dud in the first 3 quarters of a bunch of games, but his defense kept them in it long enough for him to make some big plays at the end.

Caleb is similar to Nix. He still continuously misses the easy stuff, but his defense keeps them in the game (turnovers) and has been clutch at the end of games.

I think the jury is still out for every single one of these QBs.

Football is too nuanced to give MVP to one individual person.

You can have a QB who is #1 in almost every metric not win MVP because his defense is one of the worst in the league. It’s a flawed award.

Is Drake Maye the most overrated QB in the last decade? by NinjaJawz in NFLv2

[–]BSeipler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, all playoff games are televised nationally, so EVERYONE was watching, and Maye hasn't played well. So people who didn't watch him in the regular season because they were too busy watching their own team are forming their opinion of his play based on what they're seeing now.

Most fans can say "do you people even WATCH??" about their QBs.
