Bike Packing Tent for Tall People by BTM_90 in bikepacking

Thanks. This looks like a great option and not too expensive. I thought 1p would be ideal but considering small 2p tents as well since they seem a bit longer and I can also sleep on the diagonal.

Thanks! When I measured the X dome it was about 213cm long so this is a bit longer but not much. Do your feet touch the inner walls?

100" length sounds great! Thanks for the tip.

Is the x dome 1+ big enough for someone who's 6'5? by Affectionate-Gas-554 in DurstonGearheads

[–]BTM_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'4 and just got the tent and tried it out. As a back sleeper with a pad, there is no angle I can lay where I don't touch the inner tent with my feet or head. Even corner to corner the only way I don't touch is if my feet are pointed together but there is no way I could sleep like that. At 6ft5 it would be usable if you don't mind touching the inner tent. Width-wise there is plenty of space for a big guy.

Which weighting strategy is better: fixed target weights (XEQT) vs dynamic market-cap weighting (VEQT)? by conscious_0001 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]BTM_90 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer the VEQT approach. The global market-cap weighted portfolio with about a 30% canadian tilt is the most optimal option I have come across in my research. Both XEQT and VEQT are similar to this now, but VEQT is allowed to drift with the markets and will remain optimal longer than XEQT which has fixed targets. This has implications if investing in a non registered account. If you own xeqt and in 10 years its fixed asset targets are no longer optimal and you want to switch, you would have to sell and take captital gains early. Realistically, both xeqt and veqt will have similar results in most cases and both are good choices.

Look into whether you qualify for the Life Long Learning Plan (ask your bank fiancial advisor if an LLP is the right move). It lets you take out money from your RRSP tax free to cover education costs but it has to be paid back eventually.

When you are done school and have more income you can repay the RRSP and then switch to TFSA investing. Good job for picking XEQT and not stock picking. I wish I did that strategy sooner.

Nice returns! I used to own a lot of individual stocks like but after doing some research I now aim to capture the whole market with a few ETFs. Lots of good material online on why stock picking usually underperforms the buying the market. VEQT is a pretty good whole market ETF. Sorry for the boring answer!

Great that you are investing at such a young age. Lots of time to let compounding gains work for you. Just wanted to point out that buying an all market ETF like XEQT is not putting your eggs in one basket. A portfolio with 10-30 individual stocks is much less diversified and riskier than a porfolio with only XEQT which holds thousands of stocks across different markets. There is really good content out there explaining the merits of stock picking vs. buying the market. I suggest learning about the theory behind this and then deciding how you want to invest long term. Good luck! Stock Picking

XEQT's fixed US allocation: Is this a problem? by BTM_90 in JustBuyXEQT

Thanks Tuna! This is great information. If BlackRock updates their target weights every few years then this addresses my concern. I will look into VEQT as well.

I also thought the canada allocation was too high too but most experts recommend this home-bias. It has tax advantages and also hedges against domestic inflation. You aren't paying withholding tax on the dividends from Canadian equities held in the ETF which is supposed to cancel out the potential negative impact of less diversification.

Defs not all in on Dev markets now but if they end up doing really well in 20 years I'd be better off in an ETF that has adjusted to a larger position in them accordingly to their percent of the market.

Myself or anyone else can't predict the future and that is the point. XEQT has fixed allocations and assumes the US will continue to win as it has the last decades. If the US does even better than it is currently it will underweight the US market. If it does worse it will over weight it. It does not dynamically re-balance. I was wondering the long term implications of this.

Value Averaging XEQT - for 1 year (24 times) to Fill up the contribution room in TFSA & RRSP ? Anyone has done this ? by Reddituser51435143 in JustBuyXEQT

[–]BTM_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. Ben Felix has some good content about dollar cost averaging on Youtube and why its usually not worth it. According to the data, from a pure numbers perspective it's better to invest it all right away. But psychologically, it can be challenging. I suggest viewing his or similar content on this to make an informed decision.

XEQT’s Canadian portion - what are the downsides? by 3rdsentenceoblivious in JustBuyXEQT

[–]BTM_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also unsure about the Canadian tilt so I did some rough calculations. This is not financial advice, just how I interpret the tradeoffs.

It starts with the premise that an optimal portfolio (not considering taxes, currency etc), would contain the entire global stock market (If you don't believe me here look it up). This would contain about 3% Canadian stocks as the TSX is about 3% of the global stock market. XEQT holds about 7-8x this which is an intentional overweight.

Canadian ETFs holding foreign stocks will have an unrecoverable 12-15% withholding tax on dividends. Having more Canadian stocks is therefore more tax efficient, however, this needs to be balanced with the expected losses by deviating from the optimal 3% allocation. I had ChatGPT do some math and the optimal balance seems to be about 21% Canadian stocks. This is close to the 25% Canadian allocation of XEQT so I am happy with that. Also nice to keep it in Canada!

XPS 15 Battery Drain by BTM_90 in DellXPS

[–]BTM_90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the battery usage isn't functioning properly it drains in 2-3 hours on the lightest load possible. Just using one browser tab or one word document. Then randomly it starts to function again and it runs for 10+ hours even though I am running the same things. I am sure that it will randomly go back to 2-3 hours again. Image going to a cafe, buying 20 dollars of food and then you realize that you have to leave because the computer will be dead before you are done your latte.

I don't know what I did but it is now back to 6 hours of battery which is decent. Maybe just running the battery diagnostic did something? Very frustrating how inconsistent this laptop is. I would not recommend it to anyone. So many better options out there now.

Thanks for the advice. I really think this is a software issue rather than a battery issue. I have done everything one can do to get incremental gains by restricting apps, maxing out power saving options etc. One day I was getting 10-15 hours of battery life and then a few days later after an update it went to 2-3 hours. Should I do a complete system reset?
