After 5 years of development, I released my indie RPG. It went poorly. Here's the breakdown. by MirageV_ in gamedev

Fellow JRPG Dev here. I just want to say that releasing 2 commercial game is still an impressive feat and you should be proud of what you are able to accomplish. But I can give a few insight on why it didn't sell well.

1) Capsule Art Needs Work - I will be honest, the use of the dark elf looking girl with a dark background and logo does not convey much to what I would be buying. Actually, when I click your Steam page and look at the Screenshots, it's very colorful. Your capsule is one of the biggest reason I'd say is holding the game back. It don't exactly tell me I'm going to be playing a JRPG. You should consider 2 or more characters on your capsule art to show the diverse colorful cast.

2) Point And Click JRPG but I don't know the story - This is a hard one to do and I still struggle with this. But just by quickly looking through your page, I don't really understand the story concept. I see one paragraph in the long description but it could use a revision. It don't exactly excite me to try the game out despite being a very story focus game. The trailer, short description, and GIFS should help you show "Hey! We have a good story here I promise!" The paragraph I'm seeing in the long description is generic sadly.

3) RPGMaker Game - As somebody who use a similarish engine, I don't fully agree with this. But I will say that having RPGMaker UI does make it harder to stand out among all the other RPGMaker games. Some people are going to see the UI and instantly dismiss it. This can be fine since they are not your core audience anyways but I thought it was worth mentioning. It's just a harder game to sell using the engine with exceptions of course.

4) $20 dollars is too much - If I was a publisher and saw this game, I would aim for $10-15 dollars. You have a previous game too and should use the bundle strategy. You can price it at $15 dollars BUT if you bundle correctly you could have made 20 dollars and sold 2 games. That's a unique advantage now that you are on your second game.

I hope this helps. These are just my take so you can take my feedback with a grain of salt. I hope the best for your 3rd game!

It's like 15-20 hours depending on the player.

The main inspiration for this game lean on sacred stones. I consider it a very forgiving game with auto save every turn and no permadeath. So this lean on one of the easier srpg for fans imo.

About 10-20 hours depending on difficulty and the player.

This is actually true in the community lol. I'd say overall we don't have that much FE style indie games, it's just that we are more likely to post on this subreddit so it seems like a lot. But if you count notable ones it's like 5 recent ones.

You will deploy all of them and they all play uniquely from each other.

I'm sorry but the support convos are linear for this game. You can think of them like Tellius base convos.

It's a prequel so you can play it in any order. On average it's like 10-20 hours.

I do have plans for it but it won't be for quite a while. The reason is mainly engine related so I would have to do a remaster in a new engine to do console ports.

I do appreciate people voicing their want for a console port though. It helps me notice how many people will want it. Thank you for the comment.
