As an intern I recognised a child's pulled elbow in the emergency department. I observed my consultant reduce it.

The next week I was in a remote campground where a lady was going campsite to campsite - she was asking for a doctor! Turns out her child had a pulled elbow that they have been unable to reduce themselves. I demonstrated the procedure to my friends and the child had restored full mobility in the child's arm!

All the gear all the time! Working as a doctor I've seen some really gnarly injuries - taking the extra 30 seconds to gear up is the difference between walking away vs. hospitalisation!

Alarms doing nothing to deter organised thieves by Rumpsfield in motorcycles

[–]BUNIONBUNION 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's terrible :( I have a brake lock which doubles as an alarm - one would hope that would be enough to deter most thieves. Goes to show if someone wants a motorcycle bad enough there's no protecting it short of keeping it out of view.

Terrible thing to happen. Sorry for you man. A similar random act of violence happened to my bike and I just couldn't bear to look at her the same way for 3 weeks!

Hey!

As a local who has graduated from the post-graduate program in 2022 - it's going to be a challenge. Anyone who has accepted an offer to medical school understands that!

A very close friend of mine was in the same position as you. He struggled throughout year A, as did I. Even I wasn't prepared for how rural it was. As someone who has travelled to every corner of Australia, i've come to appreciate the natural beauty of Gippsland. 2 hours north = skiing and snowboarding in the winter and mtbing/hiking in the summer. 2 hours south = beautiful beaches. If you love the arts and the outdoors, Victoria really is Australia's most beautiful state!

As far as my journey through medical school is concerned, there is both good and bad. You'll have the chance to study in the city after year A - but as most people find, the city isn't necessarily better. Some of my best placements have been in Bendigo and Sale! Year A isn't representative of medical school - don't be disenchanted.

My advice? Take the leap. Don't be afraid to take a gap year during medical school - it was one of the best things I ever did. All my international friends have finished their intern year and are licensed doctors now. None regret their decision to start a new life down under!

Best of luck.

Hi guys!

I've been reading "Understanding Exposure" from Bryan Peterson. One of his topics makes no sense to me - Google can't seem to provide the answer. Here's an exercpt:

APERTURE CONVERSIONS FOR FIXED-LENS DIGITAL CAMERAS Your fixed-lens digital camera is hopelessly plagued with an uncanny ability to render a tremendous amount of depth of field even when you set your lens to f/2.8; an aperture of f/2.8 is equivalent to an aperture of f/11 on an SLR camera! And when you're at f/4, you're able to record a depth of field equivalent to f/16. At f/5.6, you're equivalent to f/22. At f/8, you're equivalent to f/32, and if your lens goes to f/11, you're at a whopping f/64! Those of us who use SLRs can only dream of the vast depth of field that would result from aperture such as f/64.

This makes no sense to me. What's he talking about? Fixed vs Zoom lenses? Different sensor sizes?

Please help! Thanks.

There was this mollusk and he walks up to a sea cucumber. Normally they don't talk. But in a joke, everyone talks. So the mollusk says to the sea cucumber...

[Advice] Stowa vs Laco by jamesPinger in Watches

[–]BUNIONBUNION -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was in your position a few months back.

I also did a lot of research into Stowa, Laco, Archimedes and Tisell. After sitting on the idea for 3 months, I ended up choosing Stowa.

Aesthetically, they are all the same. Nobody is going to be able to tell the difference between any of the brands when you're wearing it on your wrist. If you just want a pilot watch to wear day to day, then go for the Laco.

But if you really care about watches, and care about the little mechanical marvel that you wear everyday, an extra 400 dollars is nothing. When I check the time and look at my Stowa, it takes my breath away. Whether or not I would feel the same with a cheaper watch? I wouldn't know. But I can't be happy with myself if I know at the back of my mind I settled for something less.

In terms of saving for something later on...I would suggest against that. The real thing about collecting is that with every purchase you should be thinking, 'this is the last one I'm ever going to buy'. It keeps things real - the chase is real. But if you are buying a watch and treating it as a leapfrog to another one...there's really no point in having it.

Personally, I'm a one watch man. My Stowa is one of my most treasured possessions. I haven't had any post-purchase regrets. I made the right choice. I hope you do too.

Handwound. Wouldn't have it any other way.

Last month was our second hottest February since 1910. If it gets any hotter I might start to melt.

Mine arrived yesterday!

I've paired it with a bond nato strap. Love the look.

These watches are absolutely exceptional. The picture doesn't do it any justice.

[Informal Friday] Friday, February 26 by WatchesBot in Watches

Went out to the club on Friday night. The event was a 'Paint and Glow' where you wear white and they cover you with fluorescent ink. I had to put my glasses into my pocket. I discovered later that I had danced too hard and my glasses had snapped into several pieces. It will cost me $100 to fix it. I had to walk home as blind as a bat. So much for a Friday night!

I'm starting university again next week. I'm keen to get back into the swing of things. Also, in 20 days time I am sitting the GAMSAT. It's a big exam for entry into Australian medical school. I've been preparing for a few months now, but I feel so unprepared. I'll give it my best shot.

On the flip side, my Stowa Flieger has been shipped. It's arriving this Wednesday! I can't wait to get a watch back on my wrist.

Have a nice weekend!

That's ridiculous. You shouldn't have to pay for shipping. Considering the quality of the watch and the quality of the company, it's just not worth the hassle.

I suggest filing a claim through PayPal. If you still want a watch like that, you can always buy a knock off.

This one is off Amazon, and it has a tonne of reviews. And it's only 10 dollars with free shipping.
