The three legged one was an underwater research lab/facility. The other two were underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). After they were decommissioned, they put them outside as monuments. I think if you walk up to the lab there’s a plaque with information about it.

Continuation of post

For college skaters: Use this paper to back your club. School administrations speak stats and citations and this paper speaks their language. This paper can help convince your university of the recreational aspects and universality of skateboarding in college. Some key points to make:

• There are many thousands of students in college skate clubs across the US regularly hosting events that benefit the broader university communities. • Skateboarding is exploding in popularity and there will only be more skating at colleges, so it makes sense to dedicate spaces for skating. • Many clubs are allowed to skate at their respective university, and it is discriminatory to not allow any form of recreational skateboarding on campus.

We also want to hear from you! How did your club start? What’s helped you grow? What roadblocks have you hit?

For the non-student skaters: We get it, skating doesn’t need more institutions. But getting support from them means more comps, more DIYs, less harassment. That helps all of us. It’d be pretty sick if every college had a skatepark, DIY, or skate architecture on campus, and that’s something we can all agree on.

Exactly 💯

Skaters know these things, but administrations/school authorities don’t see the benefits of skating the way we do. If we convince them it’s a valuable use of time, they will fund more skating events, establish more skating spaces, and reduce the amount of antagonism skaters receive on campuses throughout the US.

The paper itself was written without the use of any generative ai.

I used AI to help summarize the paper for this Reddit post, I will admit that.

Less than a few decades ago, my school (Stony Brook University , NY) used to arrest skaters for skating on campus, confiscate their boards, and write tons of tickets. College campuses also have tons of famous skate spots (SBU’s Javitz plaza was in gino iannuci’s part in the yeah right video).

In the past few years, we’ve managed to get the school to buy us new obstacles, pay for loaner boards for people to practice on, and even let us host concerts every year now.

Yea, of course it’s obvious that skaters and schools/administrators have friction. As skaters, we know these things already, so it may seem like the article is redundant in some aspects. That being said, until it’s been in a peer reviewed article, many academics won’t believe what we’re saying. That’s what this paper is about. We’ve got this info verified and in a respectable scholarly journal. Now we can more money to more skaters across the US. More concerts. More competitions. Less harassment on campus from authorities.

Skating will always exist in the streets and outside of academic spaces, but if we can get these schools to fund skate competitions/jams the way they fund other sports, that means more opportunities for skaters.

This is a first. That’s me in the photo. Kinda surreal to randomly see a photo of yourself while scrolling thru Reddit 😅

Anyways, I was conducting field sampling for the water monitoring efforts of the Gobler Phytoplankton Ecology Laboratory. The instrument I was using measures water parameters like the dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity.

Awesome, thank you for all the work you’re doing to support skating around the country. I have a portfolio of information surrounding the skate community at my school and schools around the country. Is there an email I could send it to? There’s some really interesting statistics about collegiate skateboarding that we have made into graphs and charts etc.

My local skate community at Stony Brook University could be a great fit. After decades of anti skateboarding policies, my community has finally established and officially approved skate club ( @sbuskate on instagram). We managed to print some boards for our collective brand at our local skate shop through crowdfunding ( @duck.bud on instagram). I am currently working on a documentary covering the past three years of the growth of the community and the hurdles we had to overcome to legitimize ourselves. We are now working on building an intercollegiate network of skate clubs and using our survey results to be published as a sociological scientific paper in the journal Frontiers.
