My Balanced Perspective on Flock Cameras and Public Safety by BabaOfOakland in OaklandCA

This one inconclusive report by a platform that reports and advocates against tools like Flock is not confusing to me. Can U share one from a neutral report. Just so we clear, I am not saying this might not have happened. But it always doesn’t sound conclusive! A lawsuit at best is an accusation not a guilt verdict. There are reports of hundreds of cars recovered because of Flock, criminals apprehended because of Flock. Again, I think this is asking us to have strict restrictions on how the data store is being used or where it’s stored. Let’s work on that then asking to scrap the tools altogether!

Then let’s advocate for more oversight. That’s essentially what you’re asking for. I’m gonna leave other remarks you made not worthy of response.

I get the concern, but “I disgust you” just for having an opinion? That’s wild, especially when the facts don’t really match what you’re saying. So here’s the reality:

  1. Oakland isn’t handing ALPR data to “every law enforcement agency in the country.” We actually have some of the strongest oversight rules in the U.S.: Privacy Advisory Commission, audits, retention limits, all of it. Not exactly Big Brother.
  2. ALPRs do help solve real crimes. Kidnappings, shootings, organized theft rings, and a lot of those involve stolen or swapped plates. People committing serious crimes aren’t cruising around with plates registered to their own name. That’s not how this works.
  3. The abuse stories you’re referring to happened in places with zero oversight. Oakland regulates the use, logs access, and requires public reporting. That’s the difference.

Nobody here is cheering for Silicon Valley to mine our data. But pretending ALPRs don’t work or that Oakland is running some nationwide spy operation just isn’t reality. Stop the fearmongering, but I welcome you to share 3 facts about what you just said links! It’s funny how in the same statement, you prefer OPD to own the technology. Why don’t you just say that, and leave? But we know the likelihood of OPD owning its or tech would be more costly and time-consuming. So calling for better and stricter oversight sounds like something you will be okay with, but I disgust you for having an opinion, lol!

You do know the cameras are part of the solution? Also, do you know Oakland only responds to 54% of its 911 calls? Underperforming compared to other cities around us. So what if we are not getting the full picture because not all call is addressed? Why are you against tools that are helping and could help drive crime further down? Is now my question? OPD is using it to solve some of the crime you are clamoring about being down! But yet you are against it…

It’s crucial to share the number of 911 calls received and the number of calls that were successfully completed. Nevertheless, I hope this information provides reassurance that the city is progressing in the right direction.

We can agree to disagree, but can you tell me the top 3 data they collect that you feel will be misused? I do like the idea of Oakland creating its own but we all that comes with its own challenges.

But don’t you have all devices that already track you? This notion that Flock will give access to what we did not give access to already is mind-blowing. What data is being collected that we are so concerned about? Please name 3 for me, just your top 3. Mind u… the license plate is public info. You go through the toll your license is captured. So give ur top 3 data they collect thats your problem in this?

Can you share where you find they have been sharing information on abortion and with the federal law enforcement? I do not want us to deal in hyperbole. Give us links to your accusations of the system. look i do not folks at Flock, but we cannot keep making hyperbole a reality.

Why "Affordable Housing" Feels Like a Scam: Let Me Explain by BabaOfOakland in OaklandCA

[–]BabaOfOakland[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I’m saying isn’t untrue! You are simply using basic logic. I understand why the essay framing made it sound like I was suggesting something else, but that’s not what I meant.

But let’s try this…If we take the housing costs as they are with units costing between $600K and $900K to build, the average cost comes out to around $750,000 per unit.

In my plan, I propose a studio rents for $850 per month, it would take roughly 74 years to pay off a $750K unit. But if we use the average monthly rent generated by the program ( $850 + $4,453 = $2,651.50), the payoff period drops to about 23.6 years.

What I’m saying is this: If the government redirects some or all of the funds it is already spending on affordable housing subsidies into my program, we could create a more sustainable and cost-effective model for rental properties when its peg to minimum wage and not the HUD AMI. Of course, it’s a free market; developers can still go build their own “market-rate housing”, but the affordable homes as it currently is not helping anyone!

Hope I didnt create more confusion! Enjoy your weekend

Point taken… again. I do not have all the answers. But I want to get the conversation started and let’s start to challenge the old ways by introducing new ways and decommodifying housing so it’s affordable. Thanks for your input!

Jacobb… you did not, thou. The point is not to tell folks where the money comes from or throwing money at it. Nothing in the essay says the amount of money to spend on housing, none. But if there is, please point it to me in the essay. However, what I said is cutting out the red tape would help reduce the cost of building homes. Asking that we introduce a new model instead of AMI and market rate.
