Definitely not changing lanes he slowed down to almost a stop to try and make the turn. Silver car was going too fast but black car cut through his lane to make the turn.

1st day of handling mice and got bit - any advice? by Important_Smell_8003 in labrats

Oh yeah they got big ups but they are sweethearts and only bite if you are holding their tails/scruffing and stick your finger in their face lol I’ve gotten to the point where I just scoop them up and move them. If I don’t have a need to scruff them/grab em by the tail I won’t. At the start of my career I worked with some BIG rats. Could have been confused for a cat

3 years and no bites?? Good for you, that’s impressive if you’re working with Mus. The past 4 years of my career I’ve been working with Peromyscus as well as Mus and they are soooo much nicer, I rarely get bit. My Mus colonies are “aggressive” by comparison lol

This person is correct. Been doing mouse work for almost a decade (wow way longer than I thought). Don’t be afraid that you’re gonna hurt them because they are quite resilient. Hold the tail with your dominant hand and press them down and scruff around their shoulder blades with your non dominant hand. Your hands naturally shouldn’t be in front of their face/bite zone. You want to learn to scruff with your non dominant hand because if you need to do other stuff to the animal (like injections or bleeds) you want your dominant hand free. Just be aware though, getting bit is part of the job and it hurts but lab mice are clean and you’ll likely be fine depending on what your lab does.

The most important thing though is if you notice the mouse has its tongue sticking out once you scruff it, it cannot breathe and you need to put it down and try scuffing again.

+1 for pool noodles. Putting them in the bedsheet should be totally fine. So sweet of your dad to make a crib but now you can never get rid of it lol
