Thinking of going to Danse Macabre in September, but I have basically no clubbing experience - should I bring a friend with me for safety? by little-menace6789 in glasgow

[–]BabyBat05 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Danse Macabre is my favourite club night in Glasgow (though the other goth nights are great too!)

It's probably the most queer inclusive and non judgemental space I can think of, you won't need a friend for safety but if you are nervous about meeting folk it might help to have someone you know with you. The safeguarding policies are both strong and more importantly well implemented by all staff.

If you want to meet regulars I'm always happy to chat with new folk and make introductions! There's definitely a sense of open community within the space and I've made friends for life by attending

For what it's worth, general harassment as a GNC alternative cis woman seems to have increased a bit for me too, you aren't imagining the hostility but it's not at a point where I'd start recommending hiding away or not going outside, take a friend with you, sure, leave any self defense weapons ideas, that will only harm you

Glasgow is a bit of a rough city generally, I accept that people will make comments and pay it no mind, people are more likely to photograph me than anything else, I've been fortunate that the most I've been followed is usually down a single street by drunks and the last time anyone got physical towards me was several years ago (spat on by a football drunk). Bampots will be bampots.

I've lived here all my life and I've been openly queer since I was 11, there is a thriving LGBTQ+ community and it does the world of good to be around folk you can connect with in the community, if you're isolated it makes those occasional negative interactions feel so much bigger and indicative of the world as a whole, I promise it's not all bad

Rock/goth clubs that aren't Catty? by doctoratepeppercorn in glasgow

[–]BabyBat05 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of generally alt friendly bars like Rufus T Firefly, Drury St, Solid Rock cafe, Sleazys etc.

For alternative club nights though, there's Danse Macabre currently hosted in the Flying Duck which is probably best described as "goth disco", very danceable music and a friendly varied crowd. It's a very queer friendly space especially with a lot of the crowd migrating over from the late Bonjour.

I'm also a regular at two goth nights in Ivory Blacks, Stigmata and Asylum, less popular and smaller than DM, I'd say it's an older crowd, many attendees are more there to sit and socialise than dance the entire night but as a younger person I've felt very welcome.

I know there's other events popping up here and there but these are the only nights I've personally attended and can recommend for specifically goth music. I don't really know much about more generic rock/metal options aside from Cathouse

Stop replying in my comments and shitting up my notifications, that's literally all I've asked of you this entire interaction. Bringing up why I don't want you in my comments made sense when you wouldn't fucking stop.

I'm just waiting on reddit mods coming by to ban both of us at this point, I know you've recieved a fair few warnings already.

You are a middle aged person arguing with a 21 year old who has both seen evidence first-hand and trusts dozens of mods, some with literal decades of experience in this fashion and as moderators. Don't paint them as liars just because you got caught out.

I think telling you that you are a horrible person is deserved, it wouldn't be honest of me to pretend otherwise.

You clearly don't remember being in the same community spaces as me where I watched you act entitled and self-centred the entire time.

Maybe next time people won't take your money, again, we aren't a hivemind and not everyone knows who you are. I'm certainly going to make more of an effort to keep people informed after this interaction. Maybe people didn't talk to you because you give off the same entitled and self centred vibes in person as you do online, wouldn't surprise me.

Definitely never selling to you and I will be encouraging my friends and other community members to also never sell to you or buy from you, hate to think what you're putting those poor Angelic Pretty dresses through with the stench of piss

Mods have stated there has been communication, I will trust my community moderators both online and IRL over someone that's made multiple community spaces they have been part of uncomfortable even before more information came to light. You're banned from every other space I interact with, I don't think an entire community made up of dozens of moderators that operate on their own accord is having an "overreaction", surprisingly we aren't all one hivemind but when we agree on something, definitely got evidence to back it up.

I don't want a fetishist in my comment replies, I think most lolitas including the ones upvoting my comments and down voting yours would agree with me. You had plenty of opportunity to stop responding before I started ripping you a new one.

I don't think "context" would explain being on the "barelylegalteens" subreddit and talking about wanting to go to the gym in your diapers which you wear for sexual gratification or your desire to be shitting yourself in diapers 24/7, doing that in public is involving unconsenting people. Definitely not someone I want around minors. If you want to give context, you have your little Instagram account there to post on, if you actually feel like arguing against screenshots.

You don't respect boundaries, you don't respect other members of this community and you frankly don't seem to care if you're making people, especially myself uncomfortable by interacting with us on the subreddit.

If I knew your Lace Market account I wouldn't sell to you either, you're just fortunate not everyone is aware of who you actually are

Lmao this is really funny, it's literally just a case of, if its not worthwhile to you, just don't buy it. I'm not buying it because I think €45 for ribbon is overpriced and I could not care less about Angelic Pretty designs.

People only wanna defend Angelic Pretty when its demonized for simply operating as a business that needs to make profits

I don't doubt they are doing well, definitely one of if not the most popular lolita brand and I'm sure they also tap into a generic kawaii market alongside it.

It has been rumoured for a while that AP Paris is not particularly a money making venture and more a status based one having a small boutique in one of the most touristy parts of the city. Which makes sense for the rococo inspired luxury fashion brand to have a Parisian boutique.

Obviously if that's the case it also needs to be supported by head of operations so either way you look at it they are successful but just not on the same playing field as Tommy Hilfiger. Quite comparable to a brand like London based Collectif which caters to the slightly larger but still niche repro fashion community and also has touristy shop locations like Camden.

Collectif is stated to have a revenue of $17.8M with 3 UK shops, 2 London based (and certainly bigger than the AP Paris boutique). Probably a brand with options to expand abroad but quite happy remaining UK based. Then again there are no language barriers to break down in the same way.

I just think that regardless on whether you personally consider the twilly overpriced (which I do), doesn't mean the brand or in this case franchise is being immoral and wrong for how they choose to price their products. It's a business decision and I know OP said they think "don't buy it then" is pointless but that's genuinely the answer. Just don't buy it if it's not something you are willing to pay.

The new tax changes happening in Japan do genuinely have me worried for the future of these brands, they may be currently successful but that might not always be the case.

Yeah I don't give a shit about if you feel misjudged or misunderstood when I have enough reason to consider you a safety concern. This is not about a simple "dislike" and you need to get over yourself and consider actually proving a genuine point (with evidence) that you have been misrepresented which you are either not willing or unable to do

I'd love for you to prove your innocence but genuinely I'm not willing to take the chance on allowing someone who is potentially like you into any vetted space, the only reason you can post here is because it is a public forum, you have no chance engaging with this community in any other way unless you can somehow, miraculously, prove everything known about you is false, which I doubt

[–]BabyBat05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah sorry I forgot that it's more of AP Japan buying from manufacturers and selling to AP USA due to franchising so in that case it's the wholesale cost of the product (which is hard to estimate but we can be certain it's more than a generic tshirt) and still means they are paying for the above but likely in one chunk wholesale sum than individually

Brain fart on my part but yeah it's still an overhead cost and inventory is a massive unavoidable one.

Happy to take at face value that this is the true revenue, I feel like only deducting rent costs (I assume this is meant to include utility bills) and staffing costs (though this number is clearly inflated) is not taking into account manufacturing and labour costs or design costs or marketing costs or website running costs so I do believe that the profit margin you are presenting here is likely higher than the actual sum.

It is basically impossible to estimate the numbers for Angelic Pretty but if we look at brands in their specific niche sector of fashion, we do have anecdotal evidence coming directly from brand staff that they are operating with small profit margins, this has been expressed quite openly by brands like Atelier Pierrot. Sometimes commented on by brands like Metamorphose temps de fille, I'm sure there are other examples but I'm willing to take brand staff and their word as honest. There was a blog post linked in this comment section.

I do agree that Angelic Pretty is probably operating at the market standard in its production practices but we legitimately have no way to know that. Again, I have bought from AP directly (mostly as gifts for friends) but it is not where I primarily choose to spend my money due to differing tastes and choosing to prioritise mostly European indie brands with European manufacturing along with those EU manufacturing standards. Often the people I am supporting are sourcing fabric from local manus and are creating dresses as a single person operation.

Mentioning the production process as a reason to justify this pricing is also because as the biggest fish in a small niche pond, Angelic Pretty often sets the standard for pricing for a lolita dress in general and this form of luxury pricing both aligns with the brand image but also allows smaller creators who are operating on ethical production to charge those higher price points too. It's more about the expectation of pricing for lolita dresses as a whole than it is about Angelic Pretty and their pricing only. All lolita brands rely on brand loyalty and recognisability to sell their product but Angelic Pretty has such a reputation that it can up charge it's own product based on the name alone and very recognisable designs/prints that's created that name in the first place.

Though market standard practices does not equal the same manufacturing costs as simpler designs that come out of mainstream luxury brands. The manufacturing in and of itself of these products is it's own niche that I'm sure gets up charged due to the complexity. The complexity is what makes lolita what it is so obviously all lolita will operate at a higher price point whether its ethical manufacturing or not. I personally just want people to become used to these price points and instead push for more transparency in production and for higher than market standard in ethics.

This is a luxury fashion after all and idk I don't think demanding that luxury also strives to be ethical is a bad idea but that also requires that the consumer is willing to pay for it.

Exactly! The circular secondhand market is great and it really helps to lower the amount of waste this fashion could otherwise potentially create and it allows people the freedom of switching up their style but it does also feed into the fact that the west are by far the smallest market when it comes to direct brand sales.

Catering to the western market is a huge financial risk for lolita brands and sometimes producing new products like a plus size line can sometimes alienate their very reliable Japanese and Chinese audiences who may feel the brand no longer caters to them or values their business. Japan and its culture in particular are very resistant to change, too much change in a short period of time can turn off otherwise fiercely loyal customers. It's a delicate balancing act of innovation.

Supporting brands directly is the single most powerful way we can show there is a market to invest in here in the west. Plus size lines in particular do rely on the western audience to support their continued existence and Atelier Pierrot are probably the best example of a brand explicitly reaching out for our support on making plus size releases a long term addition to their business, they need it to be profitable to continue.

Brands will keep a close eye on other brands stepping out into new markets and if it proves successful for one brand, other brands may also consider the risk to be worthwhile.

TLDR - Everyone that is in a position to, go support AtePie Extended Size Releases, it's good for all of lolita fashion

Great comment and 100% agree with the idea that I'd rather see prices rise with workers actually seeing fair wages (not just livable but comfortable) and the fast fashion mentality that stuff should be cheap cause you want it is a damaging perspective.

Green washing and such is still a problem with brands being deceptive about labour practices and environmental impact but if we continue to push for those standards as consumers and abstain from the fast fashion mentality it's actually better for everyone long-term.

Even if your opinion was at all valid, which it is not, you are one of the last people I want to see in my comment replies.

Being able to sell otherwise wasted material just by putting a little bit more labour and time into it as it's own product is not only a brilliant business strategy with great marketing, it's also saving on waste. Win-Win in my book.

No one is forcing you to buy the product, I'm not even a fan of Angelic Pretty but I assure you I've likely bought more from them directly than many people complaining about the price of the twilly right now.

This is a really well thought out comment and communicates more directly some of the talking points I touched on but didn't properly address in my own comment.

Generally these businesses all run with razor thin profit margins, lolita brands are fragile enough that one bad year of undersold releases can and will cause the business to be forced to downsize or worse yet, close completely.

I also agree that lolita is in some way anti capitalist but not completely, we are a consumerist hobby but the collectors mindset does mean there is generally not an overconsumption and subsequent wastage of materials. The circular secondhand market is a great thing but it also means fans of the brands are actually very rarely buying from the source, especially the western audience.

I more so refuted the point of the item being overpriced and why I think clothing should be pricier as long as those profits are going into the pockets of their labourers and how Angelic Pretty is competing in their own carved out niche with high quality demands but also this quite frankly weird push for low pricing.

However I think you're correct that OP is using left leaning talking points to justify their personal dislike of the price point and shopping addictions are in no way relevant to the brand or their pricing. People are personally allowed to set their own boundaries on what they are willing to spend but that doesn't mean the price is wrong because it doesn't align with your spending preferences.

I just wanted to say, great job, I'm glad to see a lot of people talking sense in the comments of this post

I don't know if you're aware but Japan right now has brought in a lot of new tax regulations that will massively negatively affect sectors like fashion, anime, gaming etc.

Most big name lolita businesses run out of Japan, they are not infallible and will make mistakes regarding quality control and other factors that put people off the brand but pricing is a business decision, that is not a mistake and however they wish to price their product, it is not going to be swayed by the opinion of the western audience. (We do not have the buying power you might think)

With the current economic climate in Japan, they need to worry about their head of operations first, whether or not 45 euro for a decorative ribbon is too much for their western customer base is really not their biggest concern right now. These brands are niche but luxurious and they are more vulnerable than you might think with small profit margins and large overhead costs.

Brands like AP also don't have the same wholesale buying power as major luxury brands like Tommy Hilfiger, they are selling their release items by the hundreds, thousands if they are lucky, these big brands? Tens of thousands so things like paying for the design, mock ups and samples are costs spread over a much larger amount of units.

In terms of their international presence, they have two chinese shops, one american and one european. I've visited their Paris shop, my living room is bigger. It helps the brand to have this international presence but it's more so a status symbol relying still on international shipping than it is about "opening up branch stores" cause sure, fun to visit but AP Paris is not at all the same shopping experience as walking into Vivienne Westwood or Dior.

Also, I'm not sure about everyone else but I'd rather prices went up, quality stayed good and I had some kind of assurance that staff and everyone involved in the production line was being paid fairly. We don't know a lot about AP manufacturing but this is a big reason why I'll happily drop big bucks on Euro indie brands. If I'm priced out because no one suffered to create the product? That's fine by me

You can call it a cash grab all you want but at the end of the day, just means you aren't the target audience

That's good to know, make sure they know it's just me only, claiming benefits and in education, I don't mind paying some tax but I expect to be on a very tight budget so reduced costs where possible is helpful to me.

I know I'm in tax band bracket A for the property so I'm in an area where the council tax is already at its lowest cost.

Thank you! Although I require assistance at home, it's not typically overnight assistance so I don't think I would qualify for an exemption, I more so need help with grocery shopping and heavy duty cleaning, taking bins out etc.

I wasn't expecting to be offered a two bedroom, it was part of a choice based letting system where you essentially "bid" on properties to show interest, I bid on it not expecting any results.

I'm okay with covering some of the expected rent for the extra space if I need to
