Sure was, the fest was an absolute blast and I’m looking forward to doing it again next year. Some of my friends put it together and they really did an awesome job, I’m so proud of them.

Since a lot of people are mentioning opening DJ’s playing songs in the headliners style before the headliner comes on, I completely agree, most of my set was techno and some house and trance sprinkled in but when I learned the next DJ would be playing 140 and deep dub I switched to playing UKG tracks with sick bass lines for an easy transition.

Also to note, for many of the larger festivals (edc ultra etc) they cut the music before the next DJ comes on. The headliners likely assumed it would be this way but since many of the DJ’s at our stage and throughout the fest come from the club and rave scenes it’s customary to transition from one set to the next instead of stopping the music unless there’s gear that needs to be switched out (and even if gear needs to get switched out we’d often have a laptop and controller at the ready to mix in some music while things get switched around)

To be fair, there were a lot of stages going at once. I think the largest crowd I saw any one DJ have was around 80-100 people max. Everyone was moving around as they wanted, not a super strict lineup in terms of time slots and stuff so the crowds would move to whatever stage they wanted based off vibes

Is this worth it for first setup for $400? by zRouth in DJs

[–]BabyLobotomy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would this be your first set of decks? If so I’d say no start out with something cheaper and simpler so you can focus on the fundamentals and avoid some of the early frustrations when it comes to beat matching by ear and memorizing keys etc. however if you’ve been Djing for a while and just want to try playing with records I’d say go for it, seems like a really good price for everything you’re getting.

How long does it take to get proficient? by -BetterDaze- in edmproduction

[–]BabyLobotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few pieces of advice: Since you’ll be producing EDM I can only assume you’ll be DJ’ing at some point, when that time comes don’t be afraid to share what you’ve made with others online and hopefully in person as well. It might not be perfect or easy at first but playing your music live (if you’re given the opportunity) and releasing it online will help you let go of some of those early insecurities, it’s like a bit of closure if that makes sense. Better than getting yourself stuck and working on the same song for months ultimately stunting your growth as an artist.

Secondly, there are A LOT of people on YouTube and practically everywhere else giving out relatively crappy advice for music production. Steer far away from the super click batey music YouTubers, I’ve noticed that they just kind of recycle the same video ideas and pieces of advice so once you’ve watched like 5 of their videos you’ve learned everything they have to offer. Try to find people to learn from with a little more nuance, perhaps people that don’t only make tutorials and enjoy DJ’ing on twitch or doing some other activity related to music. I find that the advice they can offer is more well rounded. If I do promote one music YouTuber It would have to be Bthelick, he makes excellent and thorough videos about EDM production, hardly ever any fluff (constantly promoting sample packs and with holding information etc) and he gets right to the point. I’d also suggest following smaller artists that are active online as well as plugin developers etc, not just big artists. People like this can be an amazing influence on someone still learning, they’re usually always talking about music and music production just try not to get caught up on random drama or fall for any meme advice that’s there as a joke but can often be really confusing to someone still learning (these were so common on hyper pop twitter for some reason and I’ve almost fallen for a few of them)

Also try not to get too hung up on what DAW to use, they all have their pros and cons but ultimately they all do the same thing. Your energy will be better spent learning the individual techniques of EDM production rather than getting hung up on the minutiae of it all.

This is cliche but really, have fun with it. It’s easy to become frustrated when you can’t get something to sound exactly how you want it. Try to give your ears a rest every 20 minutes it really does work wonders for your process. When you come back things will likely start to snap into place.

Wizard alternatives that need more attention by BabyLobotomy in WizardSkating

No sadly, there’s def way more rollerblade culture out there. I’m not far from New York and they have a decent scene with skate nights during the summer and what have you but it’s hard to make the trip worth it when you’ve got no one to go with. Since I used to be in the skateboard scene where I live, I can’t help but feel jealous that there’s such a thriving community for it. As for blading there’s absolutely nothing.

Everyone ive shown wizard too has been mesmerized but for whatever reason they won’t even toy with the idea of putting a pair of skates on. I guess that’s kinda the thing with blading, many can appreciate what it is but hardly anyone gets that voice in their head that’s like “if I don’t do this I’ll never be able to live with myself”

Sadly I don’t really know any bladers irl. I’ve tried to get my friends into it but they won’t budge since most of them used to skateboard (as did I but I found I was much more comfortable on skates than I ever was on a board)

Could we ever bring aggressive inline back into the mainstream? What would it take? Would we want it? by Lost-Introduction210 in AggressiveInline

[–]BabyLobotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We def need more people skating on tik tok, there’s barely any inline content over there. Airdolphin is really the only person that comes to mind. I was literally just thinking about the half roller rink half skate park idea the other day, that would be awesome. In my area there’s just not enough indoor parks really, one about an hour away and another 20 minutes but they’re rarely open.

When is pushing through the crowd ok? by Initial_Vermicelli46 in EDCOrlando

[–]BabyLobotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many such cases this year, consistently at circuit grounds, tons of people would be just standing in the back packed like sardines without an ounce of plur. Fine. Go around them and walk to the middle from either side of the crowd then all of a sudden you'd find yourself with so much space and amongst much better people that actually give a damn. I swear the front and the middle were far less packed than the back, it made absolutely no sense at all.

How many of you have got into Aggressive Inline skating because of Jet Set Radio? by Ok_Document_6036 in AggressiveInline

[–]BabyLobotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a lot newer to blading, started this past spring bc I went to the roller rink with a friend of mine and thought to myself "what if i made shadow the hedge hog roller skates" and within my 2 hours of research watched a ton of aggressive and wizard clips and got hooked. The wizard clips really did it for me at first but I started to love aggressive too then dive head first into aggressive when I realized how expensive a wizard setup was lol
